The debate is about whether you want to protect others by wearing a mask in high density situations. As you mention, public transport is one.

So you would have all of us wear masks when the Australian new case numbers are ~ 1600 per day or 0.006% of the population.
Even if use the 7 day figures it is just over 6000 per day or 0.24% of the population.

For minimal effect on transmission but known side effects especially for children and those who rely on lip reading plus disruption of normal social life.

It is about time you faced the facts. Any reduction in transmission now would be minimal. You always must balance the good and the bad effects.

If you want to pass it to your friends in a social setting, that’s your choice.

So why do you keep harping on about masks if it is an individual choice.
The problem is you vastly overestimate the benefits of masks and pay absolutely no attention to the downside of mask wearing.

The chance of you sitting next to someone on public transport with covid is very, very small. New cases are 1 in 60000 Australians per day.

Masks can help prevent the spread of covid. If people are in high density settings and they don’t want to pass on covid, they can consider wearing a mask.

This is not calling for a government mandate. It’s something people may wish to consider *if they don’t want to pass it on*.

But if you don’t care about passing it on, or it’s too inconvenient to wear a mask in high dentist settings, then you can’t also complain that people are missing vital medical appointments because their practitioner might be away due to covid.

Have you contemplated going into politics? You’re exceptionally good at not answering questions and deflecting to reaffirm your agenda.

Kind of. Covid is so contagious that unless you wear a N95 mask as soon as you step outside your residence, it's not worth wearing one because you'll end up with covid at some stage. John K is a classic example of not seeing the logic in this. That also includes everyone wearing a mask at home to prevent transmission between family members, it's just never go to work.

But this is about people who are infected wearing masks, to help limit the spread. Not a fail safe by any means, but if it stops transmission to one other person, must be worthwhile?

My nurse friend has now had covid four times. That’s been over six weeks off work. If they only got it twice because one person wearing a mask meant they didn’t pass it on, that’s a fair few patients that could have been seen.

I've had 3 jabs and the goal posts have moved so many times, I've now shifted to the 'Let it Rip' camp because there is no way I'm wasting 2 weeks of my life in a hotel room again.

Agree. And that was the point. For people who are concerned about medical staff being away, or casuals not able to earn, wearing a mask in high density settings is a small step, together with other protocols. It shouldn’t need a mandate for that to happen, it’s just caring about others.

At the couple of pubs I went to over grand final weekend all the bar staff were masked. At the supermarket checkout the staff were masked. They obviously don’t want to get covid, yet people were leaning over the bar to give their orders. And people in the checkout queue weren’t socially distancing with the staff member either.

Seems like a small bit of respect to mask up if you approach them.

I have had 4 doses: 2 x AZ, 1x Pfizer and 1x Moderna; +1 has had 2x Pfizer and 2x Moderna vaccines....we both arrived back home from Iceland / Copenhagen last week with Covid. ...we have been quite unwell too. I draw 1 of 2 conclusions...either that we would have died from Covid if we didn't have the 4 vaccines OR the vaccines are useless...I'm favouring the latter!....we may have brought the new Omicron variation, BA.5 which is very prevalent in Denmark to Australia.

I was in Europe last 2 weeks. Some of my relos caught Covid (again) last week while l was there, RAT Test. They isolated for 7 days. Over 65 years old, not in the best of health either.
3 jabs, although last jab for them was over 6 months ago.
They had symptoms for 1 day, thats it.

Timing wasn’t great in Australia. The arrival of the omicron variant coincided with us meeting our arbitrary vaccination targets and, given the way aussies lapped up media slant over the previous 2 years, they just bought that it was the vaccine that solved the problem.

Move to other parts of the world, in particular Southern Africa which wasn’t the origin of omicron but had fairly early spread, and it was a different story. Vaccination rates were (and still are) very low, but the new variant caused even less illness despite exponential spread. Ie: the virus changed, not us.

You have to question why there’s been no bad rush to develop new vaccines; because there’s no real urgency to develop a vaccine against what’s turned into a fairly sedate coronavirus.

Doesn’t suit the narrative, but that’s the way it is. And given the booster rates are so low, I suspect the vast majority of the population agrees.

So from next week mandatory isolation ends. If you have covid and you don't have sick leave you can tell your boss you're coming to work and you're going to wear a mask. But masks are useless right?

Apparently it's now OK to pass on covid to anyone and if they get sick or die tough luck.

What a sad world. If it was possible I'd like to get off af the next stop and go somewhere that uses common sense. It seems there's none left here.

Hopefully they'll find a vaccine that works but I'm not holding my breath.

I'm not sure how this warped simulation progressed to the point where it's OK to justify death as long as we can continue our selfish existence.

I know quite a few that have suffered from Covid and many have died. I'm not in the slightest bit interested that 99% survive or even 99.99% survive. I'm concerned about the ones that have died and continue to die.

As I said I'm hopeful we'll get out of this pandemic and find a proper vaccine such as the influenza vaccine.

The influenza vaccine is only effective if the mix Type of virus selected by the authorities is the same as the influenza virus you catch.
