Despite suspicions a number of people on board the Pacific Dawn liner were suffering swine flu more than 2,000 passengers were allowed to return to the community Monday and told to self-quarantine for seven days.

A total of 14 passengers have since been diagnosed with the deadly virus, with 172 people on board showing flu-like symptoms or reporting contact with someone who did."

The woman in her 50s had recently arrived from overseas and had been quarantining in a Victorian hotel.

She had flown into South Australia and was exempt from the state’s 14-day compulsory self-isolation for compassionate reasons.

SA Health says she has very mild symptoms and is now self-isolating.

Apparently she isn’t an Australian citizen so I’m thinking perhaps she was here for a funeral?

I understand the compassionate grounds but the Virus doesn't discriminate who it infects. I'm surprised that she was given such freedoms to come to Australia when others have been denied such compassion. And this should not be recorded as a positive for the state. She should still be in quarantine! And tested before she left if given an exemption to leave early. This kind of stuff really presses my button.

South Australia has recorded its first COVID-19 case in 19 days — an overseas traveller who was given an exemption from quarantine.

SA Health says the woman aged in her 50s had travelled from overseas to Victoria where she had been quarantined in a hotel for less than a week, before travelling to South Australia.

She was given an exemption to fly to South Australia for "compelling family reasons" and was tested on arrival at Adelaide Airport.

Chief Public Health Officer Nicola Spurrier said the woman is now isolated and there is "no further risk" to anybody in South Australia.

Dr Spurrier said the woman had a "significant number" of contacts in South Australia, who would be followed up on.

However, all of those people were associated with her flight and her time at Adelaide Airport, and the woman had not been "freely moving around" the state.

"I know this might come as a surprise to many people because we have had so many days now with no cases, but it is a very timely reminder," Dr Spurrier said.

Given she's from Victoria that's a kybosh for the border then.

Perhaps wait and see if anyone gets infected? She may actually be a validation that 14 days is an appropriate duration for quarantine, and is so this could actually be good news.

Testing positive does not mean that a person is necessarily infectious. The research to date all tends to suggest that people are at their most infectious early in.

As all her close contacts will now be monitored and tested this will provide a good case study.

She should have been tested before leaving quarantine in Melbourne.no excuse as Victoria has been testing thousands a day.

And I don't get why she was granted an exemption from quarantine for SA.But at least SA did the right thing by testing her on arrival.but did they then tell her to self quarantine and she ignored that?

Here in Tassie I have been involved in several cases now where family have been granted an exemption allowing travel to Tasmania.But they usually have had to quarantine with family and are required to wear a mask if going out-which is to go to the hospital.The exception was a family member who arrived from OS and was given an exemption also allowing her to do the mandatory hotel quarantine here in Launceston but escorted to the hospital to see her dying family member.

There are supplies around - at least of masks - I bought 150 P2 (hospital grade wet aerosol) surgical masks through a chemist friend about 4 weeks ago which will last me for a good 9 months as I don't go out every day.

I liked this from Victoria-

"Only PPE registered with the Therapeutic Goods Administration is provided to hospitals in Victoria."

The problem is the masks basically aren't tested by the TGA.Here in Tas they did buy surgical masks by TGA accredited companies but tested them all in RHH.All Chinese masks failed.Some had been distributed but recalled.Now most supplied here are made in Shepparton.
The failed masks are what you buy in many discount stores and discount pharmacies.Always check where they are made.
