General EV Discussion

Possibly the whole car.
Driver should be sent a box of those japanese lollies posted by @drron

SFO seems quite electric, most ubers and the wild waymo's.
Commeted to #1 son that there were not too many tesla's, his response was that in some parts of town they were wall to wall

In LA late last year, I was cautious and chose to hire a PHEV BMW X5 rather than a full EV. I was able to charge the limited battery at the Hotel overnight and then do day trips heavily subsidized only using "gas" for half the day trip...

That said I've owned an EV in Australia since late last year also, after owning a BMW PHEV 3-Series for a couple of years. My use case perfectly fits an EV, with most usage to and from the office, and charging up on the weekend with just solar, which costs me almost nothing (I have a 10kW system, max feed in is 5kW and my charger is 7kW. So when the sun is shining, I'm using 7kW solar, and still feeding in 2-3kW.

The wife has an ICE car so I don't miss out on the vroom vroom noises.

Recently rented a BYD Atto for a month and did some serious driving clocking up close to 10k km in that period. Some observations:

1. You arrive after a days driving more relaxed simply because your having breaks while you charge the car ie Sunny Coast to Sydney required stops at Ballina/Coffs/Port Macquarie and Karuah. Downside is the travel time increased by 3-3.5 hours on that leg.
2. Renting from SIXT means free Chargefox charging which is good on the Pacific but poor on the Hume, with a number of chargers not serviceable at Holbrook, Gundagai etc. At Yass the chargers were only 30kwh, 6 out of 8 RACV chargers at Euroa were unserviceable.

3. Other drivers can be selfish, arriving at Coffs Harbour one time there was a car effectively using both car parks to charge his car from one charger, fortunately the charger had an emergency stop activated which saw them promptly return ;). At Wodonga there are two fast chargers and two 30kwh chargers, I had a polestar move from the slow to the last free fast charge space as I drove in, connect and walk off to get a bit to eat. His car was charging at the slow rate, 30kwh, grrrr.
With the number of unserviceable chargers I often saw people try to use them even though it’s indicated on the app.

4. Lack of capacity, Goulburn has two Chargefox chargers at the KFC, very busy on weekends, on the same plot of land, Tesla are putting in a lot more

Unfortunately Tesla don’t allow non Teslas at most of the charge points, hopefully that will change in time.

Here is my car charging @ Coffs, as I mentioned one time I arrived to find an Atto backed in the same spot but using the charger from the second station closer to the road.

I don't miss out on the vroom vroom noises.
I go to 7 -Eleven in EV to
Fill up jerry cans with diesel/petrol and get my dose of fumes, pump tyres and use their window squeegee

Recently rented a BYD Atto
Many/some tesla superchargers are open to non tesla cars but compatibility issues on BYD's side prevent older model Attos from using them
They are not that fast in charging terms:Screen Shot 2025-04-03 at 11.18.42 am.png

Then again Attos can't charge faster than 90kW ( a then only 90kW if battery is warm enough and state of charge low enough <20%).
Very few Tesla superchargers are open to non Tesla on my travels down the pacific and Hume full stop, there’s only 30 Australia wide, I was aware of the Atto issue

I must admit I’ve never used a Telstra supercharger. I drive a BYD Seal Performance. Must try one one day…

Telstra supercharger
Never used Telstra to supercharge my EV either🤣

It is an auto charge system. You set up your Tesla app account first. The SC recognises the car ID and the account it is associated to. The handshake is very quick . So if you lent it out the person you lent it to sets up their account and the billing goes to their account.
we've only used a supercharger once in nearly a year.
Was the supercharger a V2?. Is yours a RwD?

As others have noted Tesla now has 65 sites and 406 stalls open to most other EVs in Australia (well other than ChAdeMO cars and some BYDs) - this is out of 114 sites and 680 stalls (so 57-59%) and most new sites are immediately opened to others.

They now have about 10 Euro countries where 99+% of sites are all EVs, so it's likely that will happen in Australia eventually.

I've used Evie and Chargefox probably just as much as Superchargers.
With it's newish Autocharge facility on most of its sites, Evie is just as easy as Tesla.

The above is a V4 with a CCS2 cable (and roughly max 250kW with a V3 cabinet)

V3s have the hole in the middle and a single CCS2 cable (also max 250kW) and marked ABC or ABCD, but cross-share power across cabinets.

V2s (the oldest ones) have the hole in the middle with dual cables - a CCS2 cable and a modified Type 2 (only for Tesla S/X) are max 130kW, marked AB and share power only between the two stalls.

All the Tesla designs are two-part units with separate large power conversion boxes located nearby
(similar to Kempower, different to Tritium, ABB, Hypercharge which are all in one units)

The RWDs can now charge faster from a SC as the SC can now actively heat the battery before or while it charges using a AC ripple current embedded within its DC charging current: up to 4x increase in charging speed but I think not so much in Australia as our climate does not usually cause the battery to be cold soaked.
