General Medical issues thread

To comment on something a few pages ago, it's not just oldies that get shingles - myself and 4 (!) others from work have all got shingles in a period of 3 months last year. We ranged from 29 to about 38yo.

Have all of you now had the shingles shot? Shingles tends to get you when you have a lower resistance and can repeat.
It tends to be more problematic for older folks.
We are happy that we had this shot and it was not painful at all.

My immune system is so over amped currently that I am hoping it will kick the shingles butt!

Except I just googled and am more at risk of getting it but the vaccine isn't recommended on current medications. Lupus is a weird bugger.

Flashback, I would think that the Hilton in Cusco does have oxygenated rooms, most of the big hotels seem to.

We stayed at the HGI Cusco in April this year.
There was no oxygen in the rooms but I seem to remember little canisters being for sale in the shop adjoining the reception area. I didn't see any reference to free oxygen being available but you never know.

Even though I didn't enjoy it, I drank 3-4 cups of coca tea every day while in Peru as well as taking Diamox and the altitude didn't affect me (unlike in Bhutan).

Waiting until it becomes free for me in November. But a little wary because I am said to have had an eczema vaccinatum reaction to smallpox vaccination when very young, and I still react with eczema on my face when stressed.

Wife back in hospital for investigation and observation and I am not there. Still in a lot of pain from 2 operations. Think they released her too early earlier in the week.

Baby is ok.

Best wishes JohnK. Hospitals do scoot people out quickly these days. Mostly that is ok but sometimes sadly it backfires.

Hopefully you'll be back there soon. Hospitals have a habit of discharging people quickly (many times I think too quickly). Hopefully they can get to the bottom of it.

I just checked into my medicare claims section. Not including a 3 night hospital stay, just for tests and Doctor visits I have clocked up over $6000 in 7 months. The most expensive was a four hour visit for an ultrasound, and three CT scans.

I would hate to think of what Mr FMs would have cost! We paid almost nothing, as he was a public patient. (He couldn't be treated privately in Canberra for brain abscesses). It was only the last year when we elected to go private for some of his things, in order to get them done more quickly and also to continue to see his neuro surgeon privately, that we clocked up some bills. Miss FM has been another story - lost track of her costs many thousands ago.

Apologies to Flashback as it seems the the rooms are not supplied with oxygen.

Looks like kidney issues. More tests required.

Back Monday afternoon for 3 days.

Hopefully temporary JohnK, due to all the recent procedures, or else it would have been picked up sooner.
Or bad luck, jinx or curse? It'd be nice to go through a day in life without something occurring? Yes I know expecting too much.

I think this could be a case of misdiagnosis. Wife has had severe back pain (on/off) the past few months which was attributed to pregnancy. She may have been having kidney issues which were not detected? Difficult pregnancy and now issues continue.

Wife will spend the night in hospital and see specialist in morning.

Daughter is looking better and better. Miss them both.

Pretty sure they would have been monitoring urine during your wife's pregnancy for diabetes and this would also test kidney function so she would have been monitored more closely for kidney stuff than all non pregnant people. So hopefully all will be fine.

Bad luck? Nope.

Not sure who I've annoyed for this trip but I don't think it's altitude sickness (for me at least). Whole body aches, had my head in the porcelain bowl for about 10 hours straight last night, I didn't know the body had so much inside to let out...... Feeling rather fragile at the moment, I hope the taxi to the airport is as smooth as can be else we might be in trouble! Think I'll be sleeping today once I arrive and a tasty meal of dry biscuits. Conversely Mrs Flashback is feeling better now, so maybe I've just picked up a bug? Better start praying to the gods for some leniency!

Oh. Now your OT post makes sense. Maybe its all secondary to your ankle. You know - something structural messes everything up.

I thought vomiting was a part of the spectrum of symptoms for altitude sickness?

*googles* Yes, yes it is (as is feeling generally unwell). Honestly I would rest up and if you don't get any better, head back to a lower altitude quick smart.

I believe it is, but the *ahem* "other effects" I don't think are... we'll see! Blurred vision (non-alcohol related :D) I'm guessing wouldn't be normal for example.

Fifa, shall I stick with my king bed scenic view room or push for an upgrade to the 1 bedroom suite? The suite looks pretty plain so I'm thinking no...
