General Medical issues thread

If you've picked up a bug then it wouldn't surely be considered a pre-existing next time.
I am of the view that a day on holiday ill is a day wasted. I would not hesitate going to the Dr and then sorting out later whether to claim. If it looks like going over the £500 mark whilst at the consultation then call them. But if not then hopefully a jab, sleep and on your way. Just my 2 cents.

That £500 thing would really only come in with life threatening illness or accident type issues with X-rays needed.

Agree - thanks. Reception has called and a Dr will be up to the room in 20 minutes, not bad for 4.25am!

If you are worried enough to post at that time then you have made the right decision - if only to put your mind at rest there is nothing seriously wrong, or get treatment for whatever it is. Hopefully just a jab.

Am thinking it'll be a course of antibiotics, let's see how it goes.

As a bit of a disclaimer, I know I've been flooding this thread a bit with issues lately but it should all be taken fairly light hearted, as obviously compared to some of the other goings on for people here it's minute in comparison! It's good to have that sense of community though to bounce things off people :)

I think it's a great contribution. When you feel like rubbish then you feel like rubbish. Sometimes the cause is easy to fix, sometimes not. It's all part of the mix of life.

We worry about you Flashback, first the ankle and now the bug! It is horrible being ill on holiday especially in a foreign country.:(

I guess I'm the only one still worried that it's really altitude sickness.

It's always the one - I've done quite a few o/s trips this year, but it's the one that I was really looking forward to (and quite long at 3 weeks) that happens to have all the issues

Oh dear. The mummy instinct is surfacing here with us :p
I rather consider it as the 'caring instinct' :)
I'm a caring person.

And yes, Flashback, it does seem to happen on the trip that is the most looked forward to. We had to cancel a long European trip a few years ago (at loss of quite a few thousand) as our son was not well and we really didn't want to risk it. Never managed to get back to the same places we had booked even though son is much better now.

Yes - my bucket list Alaska canned this year for health.

You did the right thing love_the_life. Apart from the worry that your son was ill, sometimes the timing is just not right.

Flashback - make sure you mention about your ankle to the Dr.

Not necessarily. But we are all hanging out for the knock on the door I reckon.

Oxygen levels have just been checked and the Dr has confirmed it is definitely not altitude sickness, so that's good at least. Antibiotics on the way and have been told no more loperamide as need to let it all pass through. Looks like another day at the hotel then!

Oh and to add a data point - $80 for the consultation in my hotel room and the meds will be delivered here. £10 over what my excess would be so not really worth claiming.

Could have saved maybe $30 USD or so by going to a hospital/clinic, but then there's the hassle of getting there/back, the wait, etc. so think it was money well spent.

That is a bargain. Wait at the hospital could have been and seem endless when so unwell. Plus you didn't have to change out of the pj's

Urgh annoying they don't have the counts for all the white cell subtypes. But marrow is probably indicated to rule out serious causes (I'm assuming they'd done a manual film review).

Urgh again - why ESR? Totally useless test.

I've taken 2 'interim' tests with my GP (once a month) so the level of testing has been a lot less. My next major test is in a month but seeing as my neuts just dropped below 1 I'll be giving the haematologist a call tomorrow.

I have no idea. No contact with wife for over 4 hours. I'm starting to worry.
You need to get on a plane now, JohnK. Why are you waiting? Your new family is more important than any other considerations including jobs or finance.

Hopefully she is asleep or resting. Or maybe her phone has gone flat.
I got mum to call her. Swollen kidneys. How the hell did they miss this diagnosis? She has had severe back pain the last few months of pregnancy.

Seems like they want to operate. I thought operation was last resort or do they see more $$ from farang? Doctor is waiting for me to arrive tomorrow to discuss.

This isn't fair. She doesn't deserve to go through this nightmare. This is supposed to be a happy moment. Not sure what will happen to daughter.

Meds have arrived, looks like they're extra. $25 so in total $105USD. I've quite a list, 5 different pills to take at all different times of the day!
