General Medical issues thread

I believe it is, but the *ahem* "other effects" I don't think are... we'll see! Blurred vision (non-alcohol related :D) I'm guessing wouldn't be normal for example.

Fifa, shall I stick with my king bed scenic view room or push for an upgrade to the 1 bedroom suite? The suite looks pretty plain so I'm thinking no...

We received the scenic view room. I didn't even think to ask for a further upgrade as we weren't in our room much.
I'm sure once you get to your room and have a decent sleep you'll start to feel a lot better. After all you don't want to miss breakfast in the morning!
And the drinks in the bar are not to be missed.

Have arrived and mustn't have looked too great, as first thing they did was told me to sit down and they brought over some oxygen while they checked me in :)

Wife still in severe pain in hospital. They are giving her pain killing injections which are not quite helping. She just called crying.

Symptoms sound like kidney stones. Severe pain in lower back which comes and goes and radiates to abdomen and groin and trouble urinating. Or is it more severe?

Wife is unable to take care of our baby in present condition. Friend has gone to help her.

I am at loss to understand what is going on. Doctor not capable of doing anything now?

If it is/was a kidney stone, that'd be pretty easy to diagnose. Hopefully they'll figure it out soon and get on top of her pain and she's feeling better JohnK

I presume your wife has had an ultrasound and CT scan?

Hoping she recovers quickly and is able to look after and enjoy bub very soon.

i do hope it is sorted out soon. Mr FM had a kidney stone once and the pain was excruciating. In some ways it will be good if that is what it is, as they can sort it out. Hope she is back soon with your daughter. Mr FM became fanatical abut drinking water after his kidney stone.

Got my latest bloods. Might need that bone marrow test :p

Urgh annoying they don't have the counts for all the white cell subtypes. But marrow is probably indicated to rule out serious causes (I'm assuming they'd done a manual film review).

Urgh again - why ESR? Totally useless test.

I was addicted to iced tea (no sugar)... Consider tea and excess fluorides...

Yes you can adjust to cold/ice water.

Maybe I'll try the tea again this summer...

Happy wandering

Fred

They calculated a person drinking a litre of economy tea per day would consume about 4 mg of fluoride, the maximum recommended amount of fluoride per day but below the maximum tolerable amount of 10 mg fluoride per day.

X-ray a couple of hours ago. Still no further news.

Perhaps I am jumping the gun but it hurts when your wife calls you late at night from hospital in tremendous pain and crying. Has had numerous pain killing injections.

Shouldn't some sort of diagnosis be easy? But then I have been following what Pushka has been through recently.

I'd try anything right now to feel partially normal again!

Aw. That sounds a bit sad. Maybe after a long sleep you will pick up.

Was saying similar to MrP an hour ago. Were you listening in? Was thinking that a specialist I went to 6 years ago made an incorrect diagnosis and had he got it right and done an extra test then this would have been caught years ago and on treatment. Maybe have prevented the DVT. Lucky it wasn't more serious at the time.

Hope your wife feels a bit better when she sees you.

Was reading some research papers today that O blood types were more associated with arterial clots and non O blood types with venous blood types. In my family this has been true. Mum was O and she had an arterial clot. I am "non O" and had a DVT (not related to flying). I am somewhat reassured - I read that there is a 30% risk of another DVT even on anticoagulant with the APS issue. But the location seems to be consistent with the first incident.

I did feel reasonably OK last night after having gone out for a bit and had some food (first meal in 36 hours or so, which I at least managed to keep down!). Been snoozing for the last 6 hours or so but woken up feeling rubbish again. I'm still leaning towards having picked up a bug rather than altitude sickness... unless this loperamide starts working pronto, I don't think I'll be going to Chinchero today

JohnK, I'm assuming that your wife has had routine blood and urine tests? In case it's a kidney infection?

I hesitate to say it but I think it would be good for you to get on the plane and go help her. Nothing you are doing can be more important that advocating for her right now, and being there to help care for her and your baby. I am concerned about the ongoing nature of her symptoms and as I don't know anything about the thoroughness or lack of within the Thai health system I wonder if having her husband there to advocate for more... proactive diagnostics might not be worthwhile.

Of course, the other thing that crossed my mind is that the epidural for the c-section has caused this. Some women report ongoing back pain for years from that. But you state it started before the baby was born. How long prior?

Disclaimer: I am not a doctor.

Seeking a bit of advice here - I think it's time to go see a Doctor, everything I've read suggests it may be a viral/intestinal thing. Seeing a Dr here I believe is around $20USD for a consultation. My excess for a claim on TI is £50 - so wondering if I even bother calling TI ahead of seeing the Dr, or just wait until later if it looks like it'll go over? In the PDS it states you need to call the emergency line if it looks like it'll go over £500. Just wary of calling them and then not being an amount worth claiming, if that will cause an issue (i.e. they will then automatically exclude cover for this kind of illness for the next 12 months)?

TI PDS said:
What to do in the event of an emergency
Contact the assistance services as quickly as possible in the event of illness or accident whilst abroad (where costs are likely to be greater than £500) or in any other emergency situation (such as the loss of a passport).
