General Medical issues thread

You need to get on a plane now, JohnK. Why are you waiting? Your new family is more important than any other considerations including jobs or finance.
On my way. I am trying my best to fit around original plan. The fun of non-flexible airfares and finding youself out of position.

P.S. I am not the one that needs to operate. The doctors there have done a fantastic job of letting us down.

I got mum to call her. Swollen kidneys. How the hell did they miss this diagnosis? She has had severe back pain the last few months of pregnancy.

Seems like they want to operate. I thought operation was last resort or do they see more $$ from farang? Doctor is waiting for me to arrive tomorrow to discuss.

This isn't fair. She doesn't deserve to go through this nightmare. This is supposed to be a happy moment. Not sure what will happen to daughter.

Best wishes JohnK.

JohnK, operate on what? And in the meantime, someone (you when you get back there?) can care for the little one. All she needs now is formula, a clean bottom, and somewhere secure to sleep. And cuddles. Savour the extra time you get with her. They are only this small once and it goes very very fast.

Also, hugs to you and your wife. I'm glad you are going to her.

Best wishes JohnK.
Thanks Pushka but you can't fight attrocious luck. I will take that feeling/thought to my grave.

And yes talking to a wise woman earlier and she mentioned there are others in worse situations.

My mind is going to explode. Need some sleep and good news soon.

Hang in there John. It is almost overwhelming when something like this hits you, but you will get through it and the 3 of you be together, as you should be. Make sure you look after yourself and get some sleep when you can.

John calm down.Bad things can happen to everyone.
Problem is the Thai medical system is not universally good.Certainly some Bangkok hospitals are much better and of course promote medical tourism.
I have no clues about hospitals in Chiang Mai.However I have put a post on FT in the Thailand forum asking if any of the expats on FT know which is the best hospital for expats-check it when you arrive. If people don't think there is a good hospital there then maybe think of having her transferred to Bangkok.Yes it will cost but in this situation it really doesn't matter if your wife gets the best outcome possible.
Hope all goes well.

Pacman lives! Get that recovery going Flashback.

Have been sleeping since the Dr arrived (apart from a quick attempt at breakfast - P.S. Fifa, it's rubbish! Had much better at other HGI properties), just attempted a short walk to grab a bite for lunch and didn't go so well so back to bed for me while Mrs Flashback heads out to explore.

Remiss of me, but meant to ask how MrsF is now. Hope her altitude sickness has settled.
Rest up and with luck you'll be feeling better soon.

Not easy to calm down.

Very difficult to provide support to my wife from overseas and I need to be careful with work too.

See what happens this afternoon.

Can't you use Sick leave for that? Fairwork is always just a call away if they give you grief.

Was going to suggest that / carers leave, but also paternity?

She seems to be feeling much better now, thanks for asking! Have been sleeping most of today but most of the time I wake up I seem to feel worse? Hopefully that's a sign of getting better.

What about Personal (Carers) Leave to care for your wife, now that it involves additional health issues and not just child birth?

John may not be entitled to Paternity Leave as usually its only one parent at a time caring for a child is allowed to take it, meaning his wife needs to return to work for John to qualify.

He may be entitled to Dad & Partner baby pay, which is 2 weeks pay/leave at minimum rates (unpaid leave from work but paid via Govt) but "you must be living in Australia", and I think Johns wife/baby is in Thailand

Ultimately an employer that would give a new parent a hard time for his wife and baby being in hospital is a ****ty employer. Yes we all have deadlines, projects, work priorities blah blah blah but your wife and baby is your priority.

Hope your wife is feeling better and youre less stress.

Wife is not well at all. I have about 4 days sick leave. Can ask for extra time off but will be unpaid leave.

Find out in a few hours.

Check your Leave policy, ours allows 3 days paid time off for a new parent/adoption. Not much but until 6mths ago, we didnt even allow that so policies change/improve.

There is a lovely product you can buy at your pharmac_ called rescue remedy Johnk, I think it would benefit you in your situation.
