General Medical issues thread

Wife's back from operating room. It would appear operation is a success as the kidney pain has gone. Her attitude has changed as well.

I'll spend the night in hospital and go back to hotel in morning for breakfast.

Baby as gorgeous as ever. The nurses have fallen in love her and come and feed her on their breaks.

Excellent news. Being in significant pain does change one's whole outlook. And when the pain (and associated stress) has gone makes you feel a completely different person.

Flashback - if one of your tablets is Flagyl (metallic taste) then sadly no alcohol for a couple of days. :p

That's very good news JohnK. Hopefully now all the medical issues are behind you all.
Make sure you get your own share of cuddles with your gorgeous daughter.

Glad to hear your wife is already feeling better, wishing her continued improvement!

Take a day at a time and one day, this will all be a distance memory.

Now get some rest, both mum and bub need you in top shape.

Here we go....
Dimenhidrinate
Ciprofloxacin
Tinidazole
Coleflux (not sure why a statin was prescribed?)

Could be any one of them

Tinidazole. :D.

They should have told you at the time. Family had flagyl/tinadazole after severe stomach bug. Wont describe the symptoms!

The metallic taste is memorable and distinctive.

Drat! I have a pretty good feeling I know what their symptoms were ;)

Last dose of those tomorrow (4 at a time - they're like horse pills ), but don't really feel like drinking anyway so moot point

I'm hoping the taste goes away once I finish them?

Yep. Taste disappears once tablets finished. And as you say you dont actually feel like drinking anyway - will taste awful.

We got our bout from eating at local vendors when travelling overseas also. It is different to travellers bug - much more unwell and it keeps on 'giving' until you actually take the antibiotics for it. And it returns if you dont.

Make sure you get onto some probiotic stuff from a pharmac_ to help the good tummy bugs recover!

Excellent advice, thanks!

Wife much better now. Surgeon came by this morning to check. She will be in hospital until Friday. I am here until Thursday morning but emergency is now over.

I know I shouldn't worry about these things but this surgery is quite expensive. It would appear this latest episode is a result of a botched second surgery last week. Not happy that I have to pay for surgeons mistake. And not happy my wife has suffered.

Thanks agsin for all the well wishes and hopefully trip next week is stress free so I can enjoy some time with family.

Great news JohnK. Onwards now.
(Not sure about the botched surgery though as I thought you said the kidney pain was long standing?)

Apologies for my misdiagnosis.

Wife had cesarian then when bleeding didn't stop had hysterectomy. The hysterectomy was in a way botched and caused blockage in the ureter which caused the urine to go back to the kidneys and hence kidney pain and swollen kidneys.

The operation yesterday was to insert an ureteric stent to bypass the blockage. The blockage will heal in time and in 2 months wife will need a procedure to remove the ureteric stent. This can be done via local anasthetic.

All looks ok and daddy helped feed daughter through the night apart from the 5 hours between midnight and 5:00am where daddy was out cold and couldn't wake up.

The surgeon who did the hysterectomy also came around today. Totally surprised me by apologising and taking responsibility for the botched hysterectomy. The hysterectomy was life saving but still needed more care and she should have realised the back pain experienced was due to blockage in kidneys.

She mentioned that she has gone to her boss to explain the situation and to give us a discount on the bill. Will be interesting to see what this will cost in the end.

Oh and had long chat to daughter about golf and she agrees that daddy can continue playing golf as often as daddy wants to play.

Sorry drron. Inbox cleared.

JohnK - excellent news all around. Well, except for the golf maybe. It is so unfortunate (can't think of an appropriate word?) your wife and baby got off to such a difficult start and not helped by the surgeon. I guess an apology helps a little?

When your wife is fully recovered I hope you can all start to move on and just enjoy a great future.

You won't die from combining the two but theoretically you may get a really bad hangover depending on the number of drinks. The antibiotic apparently inhibits one section of the metabolism of alcohol and you end up with more aldehydes which more or less cause the hangover symptoms. The effect is variable and does not occur in everyone

Mythically, the theory also goes that alcohol may disinhibit any second thoughts about risky behaviours that result in STD that the antibiotic was supposed to treat in the first place...

....Wife had cesarian then when bleeding didn't stop had hysterectomy. ....red.

Oh, no. Your poor wife. Im so sorry that such a huge decision about her body had to be made for her and I hope she recovers quickly. Poor thing. Sending my non creepy internet hugs.

Love the chat about golf Daddy! No doubt as soon as little one can toddle she will be given her own little clubs to play with
Sounds like things are on the mend, certainly hope so. These are 2 precious people in your life.

Apology goes a long way. Mistakes happen.

I was angry this morning when I deduced what happened (actually a very kind AFF medico assisted via PM) and told my wife we should at least pursue a please explain. When the original doctor/surgeon offered the apology this morning without any prompting from us my anger went away.

I can't really say I have not been happy with this doctor. She has looked after my wife the past 6 months. She has tried to keep the baby inside for as long as possible. When my wife was rushed to hospital with severe bleeding (this was the 7th or 8th time and there were 4 previous emergency hospital visits) last week at 1:00am she was contacted and arrived at hospital and prepared for emergency cesarian. Baby was born at 3:57am. Then an hour or so later when bleeding didn't stop she performed emergency hysterectomy.

She should have been more careful and diagnosed blocked ureter earlier and my wife wouldn't have suffered as much but all is fine now and we can try to move on with our lives.

The saddest part from here is that I will miss a lot of my daughter's growth as they will be here in Thailand for 2 months while I work in Brisbane. In November they will come to Sydney for 3 months and stay with mum and dad with very few visits to Brisbane as airfares are too expensive but I also want my parents to see their first grandchild as much as possible. They are both over the moon as is my brother. I have downloaded photos and some videos onto my computer in Sydney and mum and dad watch them every night. My wife and I have given hope and joy to 2 old people. That means so much to me I cannot explain.

My wife will be 43 in 2 weeks. She wanted another child. We have 9 fertilised eggs and we agreed that wife could try IVF another 5 times in a years time. That's now not possible but we have been blessed with a miracle daughter where many have failed.

We have decided we will donate the fertilised eggs back to IVF clinic on the condition of anonymity and they be given to a couple(s) who have not been successful to date and not as well as off as others. There is hopefully another miracle baby for someone.

JohnK after everything that has happened to you both you come through with such a generous gift. You are truly remarkable. An honour and pleasure to know you.
