General Medical issues thread

After almost 4 years, zero WFH, hundreds of RATs and a decent chunk of travel, I finally have a COVID positive. Honestly, I thought I was immune 😂

Hope it's nothing serious. Sounds like a rough day all round. I remember when I was living in the UK and had cause to visit A&E, it wasn't the most straight forward experience. I actually ended up leaving as well. All turned out OK in the end.

The idea of travelling to NL for a medical appointment using reciprocal medicare is an interesting one, though!
My reason for knowing about form A111 was a visit to A&E in the north of NL. They are tough over there because there was no-one ahead of me at the ziekenhuis.

No longer a "Novid" @Must...Fly!

Hope you are feeling ok, it is knocking a few people about 😔
I'm ok thanks. Moderate fever seems to have abated. Slight loss of taste/smell over last 12 hours. I do feel a bit better today, but paradoxically the aches and pains are much more significant. I'm actually more annoyed at having to miss work, I was looking forward to being there for NYE (seriously).

I'm still surprised it's covid. Seems I may have given it to Mum though, not feeling right this morning apparently.

There is something going around at the moment that is far worse than Covid (which I had in July 2022 and was basically a mild cold).

On evening flight from CNS to SYD on Monday someone 3 tows behind was sneezing and coughing and going to the toilet heaps - I suspect this to be the source. Although I did not use the toilet.

Lunch time Wed I suddenly had no energy and had to put myself to bed. Woke up 2 hours later with fever, violent vomiting and raging headache. Rehydrated and put myself back to bed.

I've pretty much been sleeping 19 hours a day ever since, although waking frequently very dehydrated, get up drink a glass a water and back to bed. No interest in food, very very sore throat, dry phlegm and lingering headache.

4 negative covid tests - Wed lunch, Thurs Morning, Thurs night, Fri arvo. But I didnt really need the test to confirm since the symptoms completely different to when I had covid previously. Covid was pretty much a runny nose and I still had an appetite.

Am avoiding the parentals, and havent left the house since Tuesday as I wouldnt wish this on anyone, but feel there ought to be some form health warning as this is way way worse than covid and the dehydration can be very dangerous given the sweltering heat we have been having.

4 negative covid tests
I wound not offer a covid PCR without adding influenza and RSV/meta. It does not cost the patient any more. Covid Rats are becoming less relevant unless it is going to make a therapeutic difference - in the vulnerable patient for instance or if symptoms are bad enough to require admission to hospital. For most other people it makes zero difference

BTW There are combo Rats (RSV+FluA,B+Covid) these days but as I said they don't change the therapeutic trajectory for most patients (with the above caveats)

Do they simply tell you that you have one of either (RSV+FluA,B+Covid), or does the test differentiate?

Flipping heck my right side of my back is really uncomfortable . Very annoying.

Whinging to husband about it , "didn't you move furniture today wife " bum. My grumpy back is all self inflicted . Ah at least the backroom downstairs is all different lol

Might need to look into those, its good to know what it is if there is a risk that the parentals have been exposed; so they can pre-empt with antivirals etc.

In the gift that keeps on giving i know have diarrhea which given I haven't eaten anything solid since wed lunch is quite the experience. I better at least lose a couple of kilos for the inconvenience.

Legionnaires?
Not uncommon

Well GP reopens from xmas break on Monday, so if Im not feeling better by then will try for an official diagnosis, although probably no appointments available.

Im not having any difficulty breathing, no cough, no runny nose just some phlegm in throat after i wake up. Nausea is gone this morning but when you haven't eaten anything for 3 days there is no food in your system. Trying some tomato soup now, cupboard is pretty bare unlike covid times I wasnt really well stocked to be in iso.

Well i haven't been in the CBD for over 3 weeks. Prior to being ill I was in FNQ, then at home, and I do not have a cough nor any shortness of breath so doubt it's legionairs.

Things seem to have settled today, fever gone and more energy. Will walk up to get some real food soon, if that stays down I think all is resolved.

Reason I mentioned is there were sporadic cases in Melb last three months - no obvious sources found - and separate to Sydney cluster.
It can present w fever/cough/headache but also GI symptoms.
Good news you are getting better in any case

Apologies but I think this belongs in medical issues. Not attention seeking. Not seeking help. Not trying to make anyone feel miserable but if you've never experienced what I went through you would never understand.

Woke up early in Pattaya last night/this morning and got ready to head to airport. Taxi arrives at 4:30am and we're in Don Mueang at 6:30am for 9:00am flight. Good experience at check-in and relaxed in Nok Air lounge before flight.

I made sure not to drink too much liquid or eat food to avoid bloating on board. Had 1.5mg Alprazolam before boarding.

Was the last to board and arrived at seat 2C and got ready to sit. Something hit me. Leg room very narrow. Seats narrow. I remember had same issue in September 2023.

We were waiting about 10-15 minutes and in that time I felt severely bloated. Very dry mouth/throat. Mouth very bitter. Extremely uncomfortable. But even with the bloated feeling everything around abdomen felt tight. Squeezed. My right side was extremely uncomfortable. Lucky no one in 2A2B so I was able to lean over and stretch but still extremely uncomfortable. I immediately recognised severe panic attack possibly brought on by feeling claustrophobic. Not anxiety attack but panic attack. I know from experience that Xanax only helps anxiety not panic. I tried talking to myself and calming myself.

Soon took off and panic attack got worse. Mouth/throat even drier and uncomfortable. The man in front immediately fully reclined and took tray table out. Very selfish but that was not my concern at this point.

Flight attendants concerned about the recline. I said not to worry I'll be fine. My snack box arrived and moved to middle sear and started sipping water bit that didn't help much. I know when I have this feeling that sugar helps so asked for some sugar and water. The 2 sachets of sugar did help. Stimulated saliva. Flight attendants showed concern and one sat down next to me a few times and I explained what was happening.

By the time we landed the panic was gone but this experience was very taxing. I also suspect that Xanax finally started to kick in more than 1 hour later and Xanax is supposed to be fast acting.

Picked up hire car (yes I know but no choice), went shopping at Big C to buy lots of things for home, then Makro, then home. When I got home was drowsy. Slept for a couple of hours as I was exhausted.

I love Nok Air but I think I cannot do this again. I can take 2-3mg of Xanax or even Xanax and Valium but don't think thats a good idea. (Note had no issues coming over on QF A330 in Christmas Day or even QF 737 a few days earlier). The Nok cabin and seats are very small. I don't know if it's worth trying AirAsia again but I am seriously considering train for next trip in June or my sanity is going to take another hit.

And have another 4 flights in 2 weeks time that are now prominent in my mind.

I've had nothing but good experiences on AirAsia in Thailand.
