It’s all changed I used cloth for Dr Fm but then slowly drifted towards disposables with the other two. These days it’s all modern nappies that are prefolded and inserts and not a pin in sight

Takes all the fun away - you used to pull the nappy pin through your hair to make it slide through the nappy more easily ( and before anyone finds that gross I was taught that trick by a nurse). Velcro seems pretty popular now .

The reusable swim nappies we use have snap buttons, they’re pretty easy.

If you never stabbed yourself with a pin or put it through your hair to sharpen in the 80s and prior... Did you even parent

My favourite trick was to affix a nappy pin to the side the baby last fed from. I regularly went out with my chest thus decorated. I used the pin through the hair too. My daughter was going to be terribly ecologically sound and use reusables (she must have had 10 dozen I reckon). the first few times she had to swish the solids off was enough, went straight to disposables. I am aghast at the numbers that must go to landfill.

I don't recall it being that difficult to use cloth, washing was the painful part and we had a old twin tub and no dryer back then.

I do recall a couple of blow outs but you throw those ones in the bin.

You young people have no idea. Twin tub washing machine, you would wash in one tub then move everything while wet to 2nd tub to spin dry.... Then put on clothes line to dry.

You basically had a washing day as you had to go back to machine often.

Twin tubs were quite convenient for maybe spinning something that you may have hand washed. They tended to replace an even less efficient device, and for a lot of people it was the first washing machine they ever had.
I had a red crab climb up inside of mine and it’s scrunched its way all through the wiring trying to get out again.

Ms FM finally bought her car seat (rear facing 0 to 4) and Fox Bugaboo from Baby Bunting on Boxing Day. She said the store was crazy there were so many people in it and they have had to order one accessory they didn’t have in store, but she got really good prices so she was happy. Thanks for the advice.

DIL has gone the natural route. I’ll check tomorrow as she received a delivery while she was away but she finds them just fine. And the nappy covers are so cute!

Yes I remember the good ol' days of cloth nappies and soaking nappy buckets. The daily ritual of washing nappies and hanging out on the line. Rinsing the poo off, nappy liners, pilchers etc. I use to double nappy the boys at nighttime!

A big thing in my day was to order from Mothercare in the UK if you could afford it.

Those were the days!

I was a nurse back in the late 60s and 70s - with 3 months at the Childrens Hospital at Camperdown in a baby ward and I was a midwife at King George V Hospital - so I had done a far bit of nappy changing before our son came along My first washing machine was an olive green twin tub !!
All our sons "going out" clothes were from Mothercare - loved that shop !

Well, as Gen's X, Y and Z are telling us that plastic is such a bad product for the environment, maybe if disposable nappies use plastic in their construction well it's up to them as to whether they want the convenience or to save the planet.

I used my last pay packet before leaving work (no maternity leave then) to pay for a nappy washing service.

Grateful for this for first 3 months, as a breast feeding, sleep deprived, first time mum without any family support nearby it was an invaluable time saver.

I remember we got Mothercare stuff too. They were so well made that no 2 daughter was able to wear them 3 years later.
Later they got a lot of hand me down Oshkosh gear from a friend who had twin daughters.

My grandma had one when I was younger

While I hate the waste of disposable nappies, it's pretty much the only thing we throw out. Everything else is recycled or composted.

3.75 million are used daily in Australia and New Zealand. In a Choice survey 95% of people used disposables. I am really glad Ms FM wants to do reusable nappies, but I also won’t judge her (given I used a lot of them with Master FM and Ms FM), if she does go the disposable route. I have found some good eco disposables for her to use if that’s what happens, which use mainly plant based materials and don’t have nasty chemicals.
