Gift Cards at Supermarkets

Just noticed that I am no longer receiving 3ppd on e-gift card purchases made with Plat Edge - changed as of late last week

Anyone else experiencing the same?

Now receiving a standard 1ppd :(

Wow. that's more of a disaster than not being able to buy only1's.

Where did you purchase them?

But I can't see how it makes any difference now. You can't use those eWISH card to buy gift cards in store anymore, so you'll still get 3 points per dollar when you do actually spend inside the store on other items. So nothing has actually changed.

Well...I'd still have made something of it with a few hundred every month in topping up my Opal...

They've been having problems with Edge in general of late... I have normal petrol and supermarket spend showing up as 1ppd for August 24, and had to ask for a manual adjustment.
am praying to god its broken and not a deliberate change

But if you purchase instore it would still give you the 3 points per dollar?

If not, try buying the gift card in store first instead. That may still trigger the 3 points per dollar. Then use card to to puo Opal.

Depends on your location (for now)

Regardless of 1ppd or 3ppd its still worthwhile purchasing e-gift cards for spend in store

I was more referring to the 5% off I get from Opal top-ups via the EGC discount. It does add up, though I won't be crying a bucket over the seemingly inevitable phase-out.

Edit: also what @Chicken said

Anybody got any instore woolworth transactions? Is it a problem with the edge or have they just changed the category for gift card purchases online?

This is the crux of the situation which needs confirming one way or the other.

i think its more importatnt to establish if this is a deliberate change or a system glitch as a few people have mentioned......

That’s the point, if instore transactions are giving 1pp as well then we know it’s an error.

No, it doesn't mean it's an error. It just means that there's been a change. Changes are made all of the time. Changes can certainly be made without proper acknowledgment before the change occurs. Have a look at what has happened with the SPG situation and AMEX to see a great example of this.

There’s a difference between changing a transfer rate versus changing a published benefit.

Amex purposely reducing supermarket transactions on the Platinum edge to 1pp when it still shows as 3 points on their website or a system error. Which do you think is more likely?

Given that they were willing to do a manual correction, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that it was an error.

I guess this is similar but not the same as tot hte 0.5 vs 2ppd paypal on explorer debate,

doesnt hte T/cs say supermarket spend, it could be argued that "EVERYDAY GIFT CARD 6673 BELLA VISTA" is not a supermarket but a gift card producing service,

you can argue this and they may give you a one time manual adjustment, but im hoping like hell it will be permanently adjusted

If this becomes a permanent and deliberate change, I think the Edge looses all its appeal and I will change to the Explorer for 2ppd on everything.

yep, ive just put through a test purhcase for egift card on explorer,

Can Amex give 1pp?

Definitely.

I haven't looked, but I would foresee a clause like this in the contract somewhere:

'AMEX reserves the right to make changes to the terms of their offer without prior notice to the customer.'

What's on the website may not be contractually binding. Could be considered an invitation to treat, therefore not part of the contract.

But this is all moot. Once someone confirms a purchase made directly at a store you'll know if it's a deliberate change or a mistake.
