Gift Cards at Supermarkets

Surprised that people are valuing 1000 frequent flyer points at $5. So if you maximize the deal with 10 of the cards, it will cost you $50 in fees. Don't think you are winning, since it is exactly what the flybuy points are worth.

If you can use your AMEX Platinum Edge you get 3MR/$. If you're the local champion you'll get 4MR/$

1. Platinum Edge (and a few other cards) has bonus points for supermarket spend
2. If no bonus point earning card, can still make use if your Amex/Diners earn is higher than your best Visa/MC
3. You can stretch the value of an FB point with medium-distance Etihad redemptions on VA

PS: For info the ATO portal didn't accept my prepaid card this morning which has turned this from an excellent into just a good deal for me
PPS: Telstra didn't work online either

what's a local champion?

Sign up to it on the Amex app (only iOS not android) and you can potentially earn an extra point per $ if you are the most frequent spender at particular stores

The whole point of this thread is about how to use the Plat Edge to maximise your MR earn at minimal or no cost. The FB earn negates the set up fee so you end up with a MC paying 3MR/$.

My BW World will soon only be paying 0.66pt/$, so a ~4.5x benefit for some hassle.

As indicated, it's up to 10000 FB points at ½¢ each.

On top of that is CC earn when purchasing.

Better still my reading of the T&Cs is that that's a limit of 10 cards per transaction. Assuming if we buy more, we'll keep getting 1000 points per $100 card?
Might be handy for non Amex spend at edge earn rate given issue fee is cancelled out by FB points (2k points=$10 credit at checkout so 1k points=$5 value=card issuance fee).
Given doesn't work on ATO site, might limit how many I buy. Unless they can be used to load coles reloadable card and that card works on ATO site?

I knew this would happen, I paid two bills on the Citibank Signature card today because they don't accept AMEX, then I finally get the offer to buy the Coles Gift Mastercard in my email

I tried again and it worked on the portal-happy hunting

A case for me to need about $1k of flight centre gift cards has arisen. Anyone know of where they are on sale and if not, what's the fee on the highest value card?

Silly question, but I am assuming local champion applies to supplementary cards? My wife does a hell of a lot more shopping at woolies than I do! :D

Needs to be the primary cardholder I'm afraid.

That's great news Andye. I'm going to try to load up on some GCs at my local coles (assuming there aren't other points fiends in my area :) )

I just got this email from Fly Buys - tripe FB Points next 2 days. Assuming it's targeted - implies the FB point rebate - implies on 10 $100 GCs, you'd get 13150 FB (3x 1 point/$ base points plus the 1000 per GC) - implying you'd get back more than the combiner cost of GC issue fee ($5/GC) plus the 0.42% ATO Card fee.

I've just bought some tonight to test out. Will be flying out in the morning so can't take advantage of this triple points offer. Hope some other members of this thread can take advantage of it tomorrow.

Can't seem to paste graphic from email :(

Following the last promotions by Coles and WoW they seem to have removed them from their stores. I thought the $20 WoW Dollars per $100 FC card (costing $105 due to 5% service fee for FC) was too good to last.

Coles had them with a slightly lower fee.

Now checked about 16 coles/WoW stores and no FC cards to be seen.
