Gift Cards at Supermarkets

No MC GCs in any of the stores I looked in today. Short of going exploring (that's true commitment), I don't think I'll be improving on my first day's haul.

You need to visit regional area. I went to Wollongong yesterday ( Visit Temple ), about 4-5 coles they all have $100 and I took all of them.

How big was your haul bbqwer? I'm guessing you were there for another reason not just harvesting MC GC? :)

Does anyone know what the earn rate on a credit card used to purchase [h=2]Coles Online MasterCard[/h]Prepaid Cards - Coles Prepaid Cards

is?

For a $1000 card cost $5 = 0.5 %. So about %1 after paying the ATO.

If an Edge earns at 3 that is quite good. If at 1 then ok.
Would an Explorer earn at 2 Gateway points per $?

Not quite all.

I got 30 yesterday from Wollongong and another 10 today from the same shop.

A few thousand dollars worth in Kings Cross this morning.
Maybe around 10 at Baulkham Hills also today.
None at Chatswood.

I think we are all buying because there is a 10x FlyBuys points on offer, meaning you pay $5 for a $100 card and get $5 cash back. Zero sum game.

If an Edge earns at 3 that is quite good.

We are all buying these either with Edge card because Edge card is $1 = 3 miles at Coles; or some of us (including myself) using Coles gift cards at 5% off to buy these, meaning we are paying $95 for a $100 Mastercard.

I don't think there is any reason to pay $100 using Coles MasterCard to buy a $100 Coles prepaid Mastercard. It's like, pointless?

Ta, though my question was on buying $1000 and not $100 cards online as the cost was only $5 per card and IF Amex could have been used it would have not been pointless.

Yes you can buy $1000 with $5 fees / card. BUT you can only pay with visa/MC.
2 months ago there was promotion code which waive $5 fee. I am sure this offer will comes again in near future, thats where you should hammer it.

Thank you for your two answers. Much appreciated.

When you say that it would not be pointless if AmEx can be used to pay, is it because the Edge card is $1 = 3 points?

These Coles prepaid cards are issued by Indue, the backend are Indue, so I'm not sure if paying with an Edge card (if they accept it) would give you 3 points, because it would be settled as Indue which is not a supermarket, so no 3 points.

I don't know if anyone knows who is doing the settlement for this?

I've never got a promotional offer for this one. Thanks to this forum, I was able to take advantage of that offer using the offer code on ozbargain. I used to pay for them. Think I'll wait for the offers to come around again. What time of the year do we usually get the $0 purchase offer?

From my experience, I've always got the edge points for supermarket spend as the settlement is a purchase with Coles Supermarkets - they act as the intermediary to get the $$ to indue who are the issuer but your original transaction is with Coles.

Just to clarify, that you bought this on Coles prepaid cards web site, not in store?

If so, I just realised that you can basically use your normal Visa MasterCard which may not earn points for payments to certain public servant, and B Pay, to buy this Coles prepaid cards, to use that to pay government. Um...

When you say that it would not be pointless if AmEx can be used to pay, is it because the Edge card is $1 = 3 points?

Perhaps read my original question again, where I was querying on what points could have been gained if a credit card had been used and if an Amex could be used at what rate. I specifically said with Edge for example if used would it be earning at 3.0 or 1.0? With other Amexe's it may be at 2 or 1.5 all depending on what airline program you prefer to get to. So to answer your question, then yes an earn rate of 3 would certainly stack up, 1 would be marginal, and 1.5 ok.

As you can pay only $5 per $1000 it could be a good deal if you can pay with a CC that earns enough FF points. The barrier is obviously lower than at $5 per $100 spend.

However at an earn of 1.5 even without the $5 being waived or bonus Flybuys awarded (none the deals I am currently eligible for)bthis $100 card could have been attractive.

But that wipes me out. However if you have the right type of VISA (and I do not) the deal would still stack up (without fees waived or promo bonnii gained) as that VISA does not earn points for ATO spend.

Converted my 3 egift cards from the DM AMEX deal into a $150 wish GC at WW last night.

In the latest Auspost catalogue, 10% off Village/Event and Good Restaurant GCs.

Talking of 'bonnii', we discussed it at the CBR do recently. My vague memory is an AFFer buying many boxes tins of fish (cat food?), or something. Anyone remember the thread and is it still there?

Keywords to search for are Joshua and Woolworths. :D
It was in the targeted EDR thread.
Those were the days.
