Gift Cards at Supermarkets

I went to purchase some of these eftpos cards with my woolworths e-gift card. The staff member mentioned that this is not allowed and refused to sell them to me. I've check the terms and conditions of the e-gift card, and it doesn't state that they can't be used to purchase gift cards.

Anyone else have any similar experiences?

The terms and conditions does say you can't buy gift card with gift card. Read it again.

And yes, I get stopped at various Coles all the time. Not so much at Woolworths.

Regardless of what the terms may or may not state, my advice is to try another store or use a self serve machine rather than trying to win an argument with often ill informed store staff.

Re: Chicken

They are not online use only. They are physical cards with no chip, magnetic swipe cards.

Chicken, that's a great pick up. I've only ever bought the 'online' card for paying fiscal bills previously so that's very interesting.
At the risk of embarrassing myself, if the payment options are MC and Visa and we're buying a MC (haven't seen an option previously for split payments on the Coles financial services website), what's the advantage of buying this product over using your MC/Visa in store - at least until merchants start surcharging for super Premium cards?
I get the feeling I'm missing something.

Very true, the game is much bigger than winning an argument with the ill informed staff member, so I just moved to another Woolies.

You can certainly pay with eftpos cards to buy eftpos cards, I've bought over fifty today to do just that. This game is slightly different for me as I get staff discount on the purchase so every 20 cards gets me a new $88 card, I'm limited to five cards at a time with self service and of course the limit to the cards available at each store

You haven't missed anything. What you said is 100% correct on surface.

This can be used in 2 situations thou:

1 - when a merchant charges extra for premium cards e.g. API / Reward Gateway (employee benefits of Optus / Honeywell / Sara Lee / BNP Paribas etc, where you get 5% off Coles and movie tickets and what not)

2 - when you apply for a credit card, spend $1000 within 1 week, and you get 1 million QF points. You cannot spend 1000 in 1 week, so you just spend $1000 to buy this MasterCard, in order to meet the spend $1000 requirement.

You are using a normal EFTPOS gift card I think you mean?

Anyway, the T&C of Coles gift cards and Woolworths gift cards do state that you cannot use their gift cards to buy other gift cards, so staffs are right when they stop you. Hence, don't argue, they are just following the rules. Just go to another store. That's what I do.

can we pay the same bill 'again and again' ?? let say if the bill is $300, i will pay 4 times ??
i dont mind doing that and the post office near my place open 24/7 :-)

I have had mixed experience with operators - you certainly can pay the bill multiple times, as has been already said - but I once had an APO operator allow me to make multiple payments on the same transaction, thus burning a chunk of cards and only taking as long as each eftpos transaction, rather than the entire transaction end to end

Thanks. Good to know. I assuming that buying online won't trigger 3 PPD on plat edge. Are the Woolies ones better? I'd happily pay $1000 to preload at $5.50 to pay DEFT

I don't think you can buy the woolies ones at all unless using a card that allows the 'withdrawl' command to be sent through the terminal, i.e. credit cards, gift cards, prepaid eftpos cards that don't allow ATM withdrawls can't be used.

a few questions, I bought a few yesterday, needed to do it at the manned checkout, I paid for 6 and it took a long time, people were queuing up behind,

is that how everyone else is buying it

also, ih ave a lot of council rates type bills coming up,
would the best way to use them for these is to go to an austpost and sit there paying with $88 cards?

i did it at self checkout, but can only buy 5 in one transaction (did 2 transaction for 10) and went back to the store the next day to get another 10 and so on... but i only got 30 now, dont think i will buy more, as my credit limit for my amex explorer reaching limit (very low credit limit) and my gold cba card is not great with points.. yes, best way for paying bills at postoffice, but will be good if you can find those post office with self checkout and go during off peak..

I did read a few times that the max was 5 only, or $500
I bought 6 and needed the supervisor to come over and approve it which they did,

im thinking of going back to get more

and ive never seen a post office with selfserve! maybe I need to find one

dont need any supervisor approval when i bought 5 ($440) and if you bought 6 ($528) then definitely need approval..not sure which state you are located, but in melbourne cbd, most (not all) of the post office do have at least 1 self checkout..

thank you for a great reply, Im in melbourne but I can go ;)

do you have any suggestions on what else you can do with these cards?
Ive just realised that you can pay bills which is awesome, I was so focused on using my amex card for purhcases that I forgot about where I could use these gift cards

im quite excited

I topped up my Myki Card with one of these $88.00 EFTPOS cards !
Use a self-serve ticket machine and you can select a specific amount to top up.

This provides a better earn rate than using Amex (with no surcharge) at 7/11.

that is a good idea for myki topup.. will try that as well..

Essentially I will be using my hoard of these cards to pay for everything where I can not use my E-Wish cards and EFTPOS is an option.

completely agree, I have up to $5k per month to pay council rates, utilities etc etc.
I have recently realised that I can get 5% off using wish gift cards, so essentailyl im getting 5% off all of these payments as long as I have enouhg $88 cards,

so im going to get as many as I like

5% off council rates etc. is an amazing benefit

just went to the postoffice and pay my 'future' utility bills via selfserve and no issue at all.. also did pay one of my credit card bill as well :-) and used it at KFC and Daiso, worked like its supposed to be.. too bad my local woolies ran out of the $88 eftpos card today, will go and check again later tonight..
