Saw an article in The Grauniad about cricket where the writer wrote something about a bowler trying to "hone in" on the stumps. Got pilloried in the comments, and rightly so!

Hone in is also supposedly accepted, particularly in North America. I don't have a problem with it.

Words beginning with "mis" (as a prefix) being incorrectly written as "miss", e.g. missunderstanding, misstake (OK not a prefix here, but oh dear), missuse, etc.

Funny enough (or ironically enough), misspelt doesn't seem to be affected.

It's even worse when they separate the two parts, e.g. miss understanding... and no, this was not referring to the unmarried daughter of Mr and Mrs Understanding...

The last one may stem from voice recognition

Misuse of quotation marks: found in a Guide to Applying for a Job at <company>

...please respond to each of the "selection criteria"

Really? Is your "selection criteria" an abstract thing? The use of quotation marks for emphasis in this kind of context is ridiculous. Even if bolding, underlining or italics were not available, it's still questionable.

The problem is that you can't hold your potential employer to the same standard as they hold the cards you need.

I once responded to an assignment question with a page long answer as to why the question was ridiculous and the reasons it should have not been asked. This assignment was for a promotion, mind you. I passed.

Sometimes ya gotta tell it like it is. :)

Just saw in Harry Hartog bookshop, a little book called, "coughKING APROSTROPHES, A guide to show you where you can stick them" by SIMON GRIFFIN.

I had a quick flick through and it seemed to be complex grammar.

Can't for a moment imagine you doing something like that JT :p.

I keep walking past a sign that says "delivery's and pick up's out back". I really want to edit it... and the one in the work car park that says "caution, isle parking zone". Excuse me while I just park my island over here....
