1. The strike for 24 hours
2. Pilot was relived of his duties over being a striking pilot as well as others flying like him, even though 1000 others are, told to make his own way back to Melbourne from Asia, and will not be paid a cent.
3. Aircaft malfunction, obviously a Qantas Problem with there aircaft... again
4. Qantas gives itself warning on workers rights.

Interesting day at Qantas! While Virgin gets alliance approved, Tiger is grouned, Qantas problems at mentioned, and jetstar landing gear fault and cabin crew shift problems.

Virgin seem the only Aus carrier doing the right thing at the moment.

Was he supposed to be operating the same flight as the one that had the wing problem? Or were these two different flights?

Yep, both, when he got off he got told that he was relived of duties, make your own way home and you will not be payed for the job's you done.

Just what we need, another negative member to Qantas.
It just seems Qantas cant do anything right. Bring back Geoff Dixon! Alan Joyce is throwing the airline into the dirt. If JB got the top job, none of this cough would be happening... just see what he is doing to virgin.

Normally when such things are posted a source is given to back it up - either by saying "rumour", or a web link to an article/dialog.

Having posted that, I'm not indicating it did not happen, but credibility/context enhancement is required.

Lets go through your points:

1. 24 hours strike - warehouse workers and not airport staff.. totally different scenarios here, how does it relate to flying? They haven't walked off yet either
2. There will be two sides to the issue here. He was stood down as he wouldn't fly beyond the rostered hours, So if they had to divert etc what was going to happen. Also what other 1000 people are you talking about? Or is it a number you plucked
3. All aircraft can go tech. You think Virgin never have an issue? They do but you don't hear about it as often. You also hear less as they don't fly IN routes like QF do.

I know you are a Virgin fan but really, they are not without fault either. I know you bang on about how good they are appearing but they aren't the best. A lot of there problems never make it to the media.

There is more to it than that:

Qantas pilot relieved of duties over plans to take part in industrial action | Herald Sun

QANTAS yesterday relieved a pilot of his duties because he intended carrying out industrial action against the airline. The pilot, Capt Steven Anderson, was due to operate flight QFA0030 from Hong Kong to Melbourne today, but was told late yesterday his services were not required for the flight.

Another Qantas captain was flown to Hong Kong to relieve Capt Anderson, who must now make his own way back to Melbourne and will not be paid.
Capt Anderson and the Australian International Pilots Association had told Qantas he did not intend to extend his tour of duty on the flight, a Boeing 747 carrying 350 passengers.

This meant if the flight were delayed or diverted by weather, medical emergencies, mechanical issues or air traffic control instructions he would not continue flying.

Have you seen how much money Virgin is losing at the moment? QF is still in the black at the end of the day. Geoff Dixon Didn't do much for QF except to try and sell it off. You can't also say it would be different if JB was at the top. Aircraft decisions etc happened when he was at QF remember. I'm not defending Alan Joyce, but not all of the current issues (old aircraft the notable one) are his doing.

Settle Down!

It was his right to strike, and I would think it was Qantas’ right to get those 350 pax to their final destination, without massive delays. Seems like a fair outcome considering the circumstances.

I also note this strange blurb:

Pilots' association president Barry Jackson said: "Qantas pilots are committed to looking after passengers and have therefore chosen non-disruptive measures, yet management appears hell-bent on making sure passengers are affected.

"This move is deliberately inflammatory and wholly unnecessary. It has the sole aim of provoking Qantas pilots to anger.

If they’re not looking to disrupt pax then they might want to talk to that captain, who could well have disrupted a lot of pax, had there been a problem. Seems a poor choice of words.

I was about to post the same thing

good on Qantas for making the decision to replace the captain

Let's not be blind fanbois about it, lest we lose focus on the real problems due to convenient exaggerations. We all know how tedious those Mac vs PC arguments are.

Excellent point. MAC's are just so much better, the user interface is cleaner......what?.......You don't want to debate MAC v PC? :p

My concern with DJ/VA is cash. They seem to be spending a lot of it at the moment. Let's hope it is sustainable. For all of QF's faults, and yes their are a few, I still see a degree of stability. (I know things are up in the air with QFi at the moment.'

A few folk have said and so will I. When I need to get somewhere and I want reliability I'm going to pick QF. :)

True, we know very little of the full story I’d expect, and I’m in favour of the pilots, even signed the petition. I’d hate for jb747 to be reading this thread and thinking we’re not on his side at all, but it does seem that if you don’t want to disrupt pax, you wouldn’t strike like what has been said. Perhaps he was a rogue pilot? :p

JB is great. Great at spending money

For the right resons, that will make more money then spent in the short-long term, and for everyone else thinking virgin will run out of money, i couldnt stop

The point being he was refusing to do the job as potentally required!

Such people certainly don't understand that inconveniencing the pax - who, ultimately, are the people on whom you depend for your job - only further weakens your argument.

What was he suggesting he would do if the aircraft was still in the air when his hours expired? Leave the coughpit and let his First Officer do the work alone??

Why? They have a strategy. They have a plan to achieve the strategic outcomes that have been set. All of this would have board approval. To achieve those outcomes there would be a budget etc. To achieve what they want to achieve is going to cost money.
