Has anyone had success with the call-up "Marginal" xASA's?

Re: Sucessful ASA Bookings booked at classic rates Reference Guide

Can i ask a stupid questions regarding ASA.

1 Do you get millage points on your account?
2 why would you book a ASA if you are going to pay a huge amount of points as well as a decent amount of money? why not just book a classic awards flight?

Q1. Yes. But more importantly, they earn status credits thereby helping to maintain status, whether it be silver, gold or higher.

Q2. If you look at the various ASA threads on this forum, the idea is NOT to pay huge amounts of points on ASAs. If you book a so called ASA on line, then yes, you will get ripped off. But it is possible to book ASAs in U class by phoning Qantas. These price out at at (essentially) the same points cost as classics and only slightly more money. Hence the great interest.

Re: Sucessful ASA Bookings booked at classic rates Reference Guide

I am so sorry another newbie question...what is the difference between U class and normal economy (Y).

so basically you are booking a half rewards half points ticket and getting points/s credits for it.

So unless you are after the status credits then this booking is useless eg for someone that doesn't fly often.

U is business. Also referred to as J as in JASA, although technically U is a discount/award bucket and J is the full fare bucket.

Someone who doesn't fly that often could still use the points earned in the QF store. Need a toaster? :)

That is about right. If you aren't interested in status then read no further about ASAs. Which in itself will save you hours of reading the ASA threads here, and from the endless frustrating calls to Qantas to book the things.

Re: Sucessful ASA Bookings booked at classic rates Reference Guide

Thanks so much for your help.

Basicly I am a one a year flyer so Asa don't do anything for me. Always cheaper to fly classic rewards flights.

Good luck to all in there hunting :-)

Not just once a year flyers!

My booking ratio would be 1 ASA to every 15-20 Classic awards......multiply F/J international award seats on QF, CX and other OW airlines are pretty easy to secure.

You use classic J/F international on QF? Why?? ;)

Because I need 4 sometimes 5 seats....very rare to get anything on QF.

I prefer to fly CX and even BA to get decent J seats.....I'll go with classic partner award over ASA with QF.

Re: Sucessful ASA Bookings booked at classic rates Reference Guide

Just thought I would chime in with my $0.02.

Rang Qantas today to request SYD>BRS>TNS return - mASA/JASA (yes, you know why!) and spoke with someone who clearly knew what I was talking about. All booked in under 10 minutes and a friendly conversation to boot...

I happened to ask "Are they (the MASA's) coming back to the website booking system?" The answer was a firm "nope - definitely not, the ASAs were meant to be gone after Points+Pay was introduced but too many WPs kicked up a fuss so now we only really do this for 'you guys' - people who ring up and know what they are asking for..."

I'm paraphrasing but that's the gist of what I heard - which I know is slightly at odds with what's been mentioned further up in this thread...

At least my first mASA phone booking (after lurking here for a while) was a breeze...

Welcome, but you mean SYD-BNE-TSV presumably ;)

hence why we all need to keep the dream alive by continuing to book them. If we stop, QF will stop.
I'm going to have a crack at my 2nd one in a few days after the disaster of my first.

Happy to help :) Got a few others this year I will look at MASA's for - apart from usual work travel...

From memory I think I have booked 6 or 7 since June

Sucessful ASA Bookings booked at classic rates Reference Guide

Month booked | Month travelled | Cabin | Route | Points cost | Co-pay* | Classic co-pay~ | Max points cost~ | SCs earned
Jan 14 | Mar 14 | FIRST P | SYD-DXB-SYD | 288,000 | $992.55 + CC fee $30 | ? | ? | 540

Originally my partner had a Classic award for SYD-LCA in First then LCA-SYD in Business for a cost of 280,000 points plus $732. After reading about the xASA's and finding a First seat for the return trip I thought it might be worthwhile trying a FASA + Partner Award (changing the Business flight to First would have cost an additional 56000 points and $80). It took three phone calls and some confusion from both ends, but eventually cancelled the Class award and with the aid of a supervisor a successful booking was made - the above FASA and a Partner Award for DXB-LCA-DXB in Economy linked to the FASA for an extra 32000 points and $66 copay. My partner didn't have enough points to book the DXB-LCA trip in Business or First but the SYD-DXB-SYD trips will make up for the short economy flights.

The bonus is my partner will now make WP with the 540 Status Credits.

A big thanks to all contributors to the forum, I wouldn't have know about xASA's or attempted to book the above flight without your excellent advice.

I'm impressed, not so much at the value but the ability to find a P seat SYD-DXB! I have found a SYD-LHR but never a DXB no matter how hard I try, even the magical 330 days out :(

Re: Sucessful ASA Bookings booked at classic rates Reference Guide

Jan 14 / Jul 14 / J / ADL - SYD - OOL - SYD - ADL / 48,000 / $355.92 / No mention of CC fee / $141.92 / 200sc

Cost per pax, booked for 2 pax.

Total time taken 25 mins as there was a problem showing availability at the call centre. Agent Paul in Hobart soon had it sorted. :p

Re: Sucessful ASA Bookings booked at classic rates Reference Guide

Not long off the phone speaking to Paul in Hobart.

Booked a JASA for Mrs B and I, spending a week in OOL during July.

7 minutes on hold before call answered, total time taken 25mins as the Qantas "system" was showing less availability than what I could see on the web
Paul got it sorted and we are away :p

When I asked Paul, who knew exactly what he was doing, if he has booked many he said a few but they are very rare bookings. Most book classics.

Edit to add: Just noticed charge of 3,500 x 2 so will need to ring and get it reversed.
