Has anyone had success with the call-up "Marginal" xASA's?

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

I gave up (after 2 more calls), and just purchased the flights.

While I was ruining my day anyway, I thought I'd try another exercise; getting points/pricing on the 1300 line for an old fashioned JASA/MASA Status Run. (Yes - I have too many points to play with ;)). Was told a memo has gone around today stating Classic Point Pricing (minimum points) is only available on Direct Flights. If there is any transit/stopover, then the points required to purchase will go up accordingly. Therefore the JASA - TSV/BNE/MEL/AKL/MEL/BNE/TSV for minimal points appear to be well and truly over

I am hoping along with others im sure in so much that the people that you have been talking too seem to have no idea on how to book a JASA in the first place and on that basis wouldnt know what has happening Grrrrrrrrr

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

I just called tonight to get myself to Bangkok later in the year and it was a particularly painless and almost pleasant experience...

The operator knew exactly what I wanted when I said I'd like to book an ASA at Classic Rate/U Class. She was straight onto it and said 'clearly you're clued up but I just need to tell you that the booking fee will be waived, there's minimum points you need to use (and a maximum) etc etc'

I said she sounded like she had done a number of these and she indicated that indeed the 'higher tier members are clued up' - she even seemed to agree the MASA is great value and we can all be happy!

The classic rate was showing this

Trip Price for - 1 x Adult:
72,000
Total Trip Price:
72,000

72,000

Card Payment *
$303.42 (AUD)

They gave me 60k as the min points with $411.22 co-pay (plus CC fee of $30) but I suggested 70k and got a co-pay very close to the above.

All round I'm very happy with this, but unfortunately I couldn't get a seat home so am going to try my luck using KF points for my first ever business seat with Singapore... Qantas might be in danger as I suspect the sub 50k points required and far superior business cabin might be their undoing in terms of my loyalty!

Think I know which I will see first.

Drive along the Melba Highway between Yarrta glen and Dixons Creek and you WILL see flying pigs outside the turf farm. !

So the method of booking JASA's has been enchanced, the cash outlay has been enchanced & now the points required has also been enchanced? Even if they are reintroduced unless it's how it was prior to 26 June then the whole exercise will be pointless.

Anyway as a result I've enhanced the way I will use my QF ff points:

a) only book JASA's if the points/cash (not points & pay) is similar or what I feel is worth paying taking into account the return on investment I would get in points/SC earn.

b) look at Classic Awards (ie exclude points & pay options from the equation) for the purpose of comparing what the taxes would be compared to an AAdvantage redemption & see how much money I will save on taxes by going with the latter option but travelling on the same flight.

c) Avoid Points & Pay as I've noticed way too many examples of using all your hard earned points then the system wanting more cash than just buying an airfare outright & getting to keep the points.

d) use QF ff points for Partner Awards on sector fares here and there to fill in the gaps between a combination of other commercial flights or award tickets through different airline programs where taxes are much lower.

e) take advantage of the US DM 100% bonus miles offer in August where I guy 50,000 points & receive 100,000 for USD1,881.25 which will convert nicely 1:1 to AAdvantage miles down the track. Remember newbies signing up to US DM need to wait 12 days before they can purchase points so join by mid August at the latest.

That's about it really! :p

I'm not so sure about this. The JASA I booked recently was exactly the same as before the change. Perhaps part of the problem is that classic award availability does not guarantee being able to get a JASA at classic rates. I wish I could turn back time to check this theory, but there have been examples (like mine) where nothing changed. I think it would be worth someone calling up with several date options to see whether the points and cash stay the same.

FYI I booked ADL-BNE-TSV return for 48000 plus $363, exactly the same as late November last year. Nice return of 480 status credits (DSC) for the relatively small outlay.

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

SYD/BNE/TSV Return JASA cost me 48,000 points and AUD $356.16, an increase of $90.76 post 26 June.
The increase in taxes / surcharges was already present pre web change. I booked this exact route on 25 June online, the night before the web change for 48K QF points and $349.08 so not much price rise.

On 3/4/13, the taxes were $264.74,
On 25/3/13, the taxes were $264.74,
On 16/3/12, the taxes were $228.09!!

I was told the memo went around today... but I have my doubts. I'm convinced people just make sh;t up when they don't know how to do something.

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

Has anyone done a SYD (MEL or BNE) to ZQN (Queenstown NZ) JASA fare and recall ~ points and $ spend? Looking for late June/July next year, so peak season time for comparison. If data is forth coming ex ADL even better. thank you in advance

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

Be careful what you wish for. One way of fixing the problem would be to stop offering ASAs altogether ;)

And you don't think that's the hidden agenda anyway?

drdpr, I've got a JASA ADL-SYD-ZQN coming up in November, booked in February.
36000 pts + $234. Requires overnight in SYD.

I go to ZQN reaonably often and I have found you have to be a bit lucky to get decent priced JASA to ZQN on the days you want. An alternative I have used is ADL-MEL-WLG where availability tends to be better, and catch connecting NZ flight to ZQN. Depends how much time you want to waste chasing SCs I suppose.

Waste time chasing status credits? Is there such a thing? But especially in light of some of the posts here perhaps that is the new reality

You were so unlucky.... like so many others.

I have to admit I had better rides than yours - but it was (and is) a matter of dumb luck, rather than any skills on my part.

Try again, that's all I could suggest.

Anything else - e.g. MASA back online - is wishful thinking IMHO.

Well, the fact that I have admitted going via WLG to get to ZQN shows how little I value my time..:)
