re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

Can anyone report on the success of cancelling a domestic JASA and immediately rebooking it, to take advantage of the DSC offer, and not loosing the award seats?

I currently have a trip to MEL booked for Jan and there are no award seats showing on the flights I have so I'm hoping they can be cancelled and rebooked before someone else snaffles them.

I cancelled a CBR-SYD-HBA a couple of days back and didn't see it go back into inventory. So I would say: risky.

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

Does there have to be U class availability showing on say Expertfly for a particular flight to be able to actually make an ASA in U? ExpertFlyer showing a very empty flight on the BNE-TSV-BNE flights I want but no U class availability. I just called the 1-300 number, got Matthew who didnt have a clue about these, told me to do it online. I asked that he read ROQ7740 which after reading he said "he'd give it a go"

yes basically U class must be available. If you can see a classic award available on qantas.com it SHOULD (but no guaranteed) be available as an asa .You are using the terminology 'anyseat award in U class' when you call so it seems obvious U should be available.

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

A couple of questions to the more learned and experience members here from a member who has never before embarked on any xASA booking, but is tempted to:

1. How accurate is FlightStats (FlightStats - Global Flight Tracker, Status Tracking and Airport Information) in its display of available fare buckets? Does anyone have experience with this site, as it seems that you can access seat availability data by fare bucket for free, whereas the data on expert flyer is available only with a premium subscription.

2. What is ROQ7740 and what does it say/what purpose does it serve to the customer service rep? Do I need to know/understand what this means?

3. I have never phoned to book an xASA before, but I am tempted to do some January status runs with the combination of the current dom DSC offer, and a few hundred thousand points that I have in my account with no real intended purpose as yet. Is it really as simple as it seems to be portrayed by peoples comments on this site i.e.
- Check the QF website to see if a classic award is available (or check expert flyer or flightstats for available U class fare buckets for a JASA) on one of these often mentioned good quality status runs
- Call the phone number, and ask for a price on that flight, in that fare bucket. Mention ROQ7740 if the CSR is unsure
- Get a quote in points/point plus dollars for the fare, which should be attractive if U is available (for a JASA)
- Confirm that it is an Any Seat Award and NOT a Classic Award to ensure points and SC earn
- If I'm happy with the price, accept it and book. No "phone assisted" booking fees to apply
- thats it.....

Is it really that simple?

4. Are the CSR's helpful in finding a competitively priced itinerary or do they just operate based on what I will tell them i.e. If I call and I say I want to do a a couple of MEL-SYD-ASP return flights to convert QFF points into SC's, and I am completely flexible with dates in January, will they do a bit of hunting around for me on the system to find days/flights that are available at a competitive points price to then present to me, or do I have to do the hunting around (somehow) and present the CSR with what I want (dates, flight numbers etc) and then hope that I have fluked it and got the flights right that coincides with a good price?

Apologies for what are no doubt novice questions. I just don't want to call up and screw everything up for myself by doing the wrong thing, or saying the wrong things to the CSR's.

Many thanks in advance though for the assistance in response.

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

1. Cant answer don't use it
2. Its a cue card that the CSR's use that explains in step form what to do. They always ask how do you know about this card
3. Yes it is very easy if you get the right CSR. If not it is easy to thanks for your help hang up and call again
4. I have had two very helpful CSR that have spent time helping find (if possible) a better way. But have also had a few that said " we are flat out here so sorry I don't have time to look"

Yes it can and should be that easy as long as you get a CSR who knows what they are doing.

I would recomend that you do initial checks then call and see what is available and have a few dates that you can work around.

If you are unhappy with the way it is going ie points cash etc then simpley say thank you hang up and call back again.

Before calling check the spreadsheet for succesful ASA bookings that show the points and dollars involved so that you know if what is being offered is good or not.

All the best with it.

Re: Sucessful ASA Bookings booked at classic rates Reference Guide

Curious why everyone chooses TSV into their SC runs. Why not CNS ?

Because CNS would make it into a higher zone and cost many more points

Re: Sucessful ASA Bookings booked at classic rates Reference Guide

When I did mine from CNS purchased return Y (no J available) to Townsville and commenced there. Did J TSV/BNE/DRW/BNE/TSV.

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

I've emailed my QF contact to try and schedule another meeting to discuss the progress of these. I commented:
the discussion on AFF has been turning more positive (more people successful and quicker time taken); but there are still CSA’s who aren’t aware of the inability to book online, or their own information sheet (Right on Q 7740) showing the steps needed in their res system to make the booking etc.
Hoping for either 11th or 19th December (as I'll be in the CBD in his building on the first day and in a nearby building on the second). Will report back on our "full and frank" discussions

They tried to charge me 3,500 points for a phone booking but agreed not to as soon as I asked them to check etc

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

Did another mJASA today. This time domestic. Carol helped me out - knew what to do and even asked "Is this for the double-status credits?" I tend to call after hours - not sure if that helps with who you get. Checked after the ticket was issued and has appeared as a QANTAS AND JETSTAR ANYSEAT AWARD REDEMPTION on my statement and fare basis is UBPARSOW. Will post cost and route in the other forum.

Have we adapted so quickly to see this as being simple?

How quickly we forget.

I currently have a trip to MEL booked for Jan and there are no award seats showing on the flights I have so I'm hoping they can be cancelled and rebooked before someone else snaffles them.

Called up to talk this through and the CSR confirmed that there is no guarantee that the seat swill be released back into the U fare bucket. Thankfully there are alternatives I am prepared to book instead, but then up popped yet another QF credit card related, how shall I put it, anomaly!!

The card I used to originally pay the $$$ is now closed and gone, so QF cannot refund to a different credit card without a letter from the bank saying which account is closed and what the new details are or a stat dec from me, witnessed by a JP, saying the same. WTF!!! The former is impossible as the old and new cards are with different banks and, in any case, Woolworths (old card) is not a bank and the latter just seems an unnecessary ball ache. What with this and being double charged, I'm not surprised QF are up the creek without a paddle and with a hungry salty looming!

JessicaTam, you are one of the members here who actually make it sound (to me anyway) as being relatively simple - if you can get the stars to line up magically for you. So, perhaps you have been subconsciously reprogrammed to accept this new way and work within its complications. ;)

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

QF cannot refund to a different credit card

Basically the first thing I will do when I hit Lifetime Gold and then P1 is ask the team to find some way to refund my outstanding QP membership... of course the card I bought it with many years ago no longer exists, but I'm yet to hear a decent explanation as to why that should be an issue in the real world.
