Good on Gordon for enforcing that! But my little guy is still to young to sit by himself.
We're trying for another kid at the moment so the premium cabin flying will come to a halt eventually due to cost and lack of award seats.

Our kids are doing long haul Y for the first time next week I think I'm more worried than them.

I worry about my kid having never experienced long haul economy. He's growing up thinking business class is the norm. In a few years when he's tall enough to suffer, I'll book us some Y seats SYD-DXB-LHR so he gets to experience it

I was warned 17+ years ago not to let our daughter travel in J or F as I would be creating a travel monster. I did not heed the warning and some 17+ years later our daughter thinks J and F are the norm.

I thought buiness class are for treats and those special occasion moments (being upgraded for free by the gate agent is a different story). Trick or treat!

Our kids are doing long haul Y for the first time next week I think I'm more worried than them.

Oh, I’m not at all worried about my kids. Four of them are on long haul over the next 12 months. All are fit, lean and not overly tall.

@RooFlyer and @TheRealTMA no need for sad faces, sure my daughter has become accustomed to travelling J and F but this was my doing. In general and as a family rule:

1. Fights under 3 hours - Y
2. Flights over 3 hours - J or F
3. If all on the same flight, all travel is in the same class.
4. If not on the same flight all bets where off, except rules 1 and 2. There has been times when they were in F and I was in J and the other way around.

We have never been precious about being on the same flight and now as my daughter is almost an adult she asks questions such as "my friends and I are thinking of going to place ABC would you be interested in going" and my guess is she is thinking "invite mum and dad as they will cover the cost"

I see I'm way too late to the party to make the "F" comments, but, if it hasn't already been mentioned ... it depends a lot on:

*Age

*Number of fellow travelling companions

as well as the obvious length of flight(s).


If you're young, you can hack solo Y.

If you're not going solo, you can probably cope with more Y.

If you're old and solo, then J or F come into their own!


...and having done combos (just off an F-F-J), the J at the end is very much the letdown!


(Oh, and ... having experienced "D Day" {Dubai mid April Deluge} ... sitting on the tarmac for something approaching 4 hours ... while not happy, I was calmer in F than I would have been in J, and Y would have been "testing" to say the least!}

I loved travel and travelled Y exclusively until about 10 years ago.

Praise be that I discovered AFF and ways to travel J affordably. Because I got fat and Y is just the worst now.

Yes - it's definitely ruined me (and the Mrs)!

I took my first ever flights around 22 years ago, and did nothing but Y for about the first 8-10 years of it, which was mostly work travel, but a couple of LONE4 RTWs and other personal trips, as well. After lifting my points earning game dramatically, I started to put in CR upgrade requests on just about every flight I took with QF, and also started to self-pay for upgrades on intra-Asia short hauls with MH, SQ & others (work policy was Y; regardless of time or distance). I was soon travelling mostly in W/J, whilst only ever booking Y at the outset.

Didn't take long to get so accustomed to it that pretty much all trips had to be in J, and if QF points upgrade options weren't available/likely, or the personal upgrade cost too high, then I'd move travel to dates where it would be, or change my routing, etc. Thankfully it was largely up to me when and where to go, so easy enough to do. Personal travel was also increasingly in W or J, especially for long-haul. Work travel eventually dried up when the pandemic hit, and never re-started for me... but personal travel took it's place, and has been exclusively in J or F since; whether via points, or cash.

My son is now 8, and I think has only been in Y once... all else (and all he can recall) has been J. With most of our travel now being personal and done together as a family; my wife is also WP, and my son was just short of reaching WP this year, himself! He has no idea how fortunate he is, or that he'll be somewhat protected from the pain of Y travel as an adult by the real likelihood of having attained QFF LTG by the time he gets there

My thanks to AFF for at least helping to create a more efficient set of monsters!

Speaking of the offspring, mine are young adults now but lately I've been pushing them to pay for extra legroom / economy comfort seats. Two of the kids are tall ones and any extra pitch adds to their comfort. Both recently took heed and were happy about it. One of them bought his way into the JL B78x Y bulkheads and that clearly was a great move.

The next seed to plant: when the price difference is reasonable, get yourself into PE. The rest they can figure out as they go...

They're going to go from JL Y bulkhead to a cramped PE with another airline and then head back to JL Y Bulkhead. That space is enormous. Perhaps you can mention OW Ruby can select those seats for free.

I'd say the next thing is to get them to find a way to redeem a J reward from points earnt.

We never flew J when we travelled with the two kids. He did get to fly J with work. Those days are gone. Now he too gets to experience long haul Y for personal experiences. Having kids puts a drain on the finances. Then there's four seats to be paid for.

A business colleague became redundant and had a wonderful payout. He took his two kids on an F class trip around the world. Son took a peak through the curtain and reported back to his Dad that it was so crowded back there. He had sneaked a peak into the J cabin.

It has 100% ruined me. Especially when most of my J flying was in QR Q-suite. I spent a long time living in Europe and was able to jump on a number of ex-EU QR J fares to Australia/SE Asia for about 1200GBP return. Incredible, incredible product.

From a work perspective it was always BA J, I have a soft spot for the club suites.

Broke my J cherry with QR last year. The problem was that has set the bar way too high now and have flown QF and AA since.

Got SQ later this year so hopefully that will be great
