Re: QFF Qantas Cash Card

...
Agree with what others have said about -
  • PIN (I didn't bother memorising/writing it down, and the process to go through to retrieve it, if I do decide to use the product, is exhausting. So the lack of self-select PIN will, in all probability, mean that I never use QF Cash.)
...

I activated my card yesterday and have found that my PIN is a number than means something to me, which helps. I agree that it would be better to be able to select one.

but the card has an expiry date of OCT 2013...so the card lifespan is less than 2 months!
Tried unsuccessfully to activate on the phone; was transferred to a helpful chap in the UK. The new card is already in the mail ("it should arrive Saturday" - except there is no Saturday delivery in Aus!), and the current card can't be activated, because the new one is already on the way. Which would normally be fine, except I fly to the US on Sunday...oh well.

Received my card however is is just standard base card no Qantas Club details I would assume they should be on there?

I received mine during the week and activated today. Just wondered if anyone can confirm the following: my reading of the info is that it can be used to withdraw cash fee free from any bank's ATM in Oz. Is that correct?

If so it's a fairly minor benefit, but one I'd actually use. Reason being I bank with NAB, but there is no NAB ATM within walking distance of either my home or work. Consequently I end up wearing the $2 fee to withdraw from the ANZ round the corner more often not!

"Some ATM operators may charge a withdrawal fee"

Sorry.

"Some ATM operators may charge a withdrawal fee"

Sorry.

But I'm guessing that's the non-bank ATMs that charge everyone a fee, no? If the major banks (and therefore 95% of ATMs) charged a fee, it would be a bit disingenuous to say "some". It's not exactly clear though.

I have yet to find an ATM that is not mine that does not charge a fee. So I am thinking "some" = "all"

Received mine this week. Silver, pre-reg. Unlikely to activate it though as I can't really see the value proposition.

Can't change PIN - fail !
Has international ATM withdrawal fee similar to the major bank cards.
Has 3% currency conversion fee (ie where that currency has not been preloaded), similar to the major bank cards.
Negative balance fee $20 (ie debit only card, not credit card)
$1 per month inactivity charge after 12 months.

28 Degrees works very well for me, with none of the above.

FF points (1pt per AUD$2 spent or $1 foreign currency) ? Pre-loaded currencies ? Still can't see the value proposition.

Its been stated a number of times this card is not a competitor to 28 degrees or even the Citi debit product, however if you don't like or cannot have a credit card it's an opportunity to build QFF points at zero cost for domestic spend while those saving for an overseas trip can lock in their spend by preloading the currency before the trip.

I've activated my card & did a test balance transfer from ME Bank last Wed 18 Sep by the close of business for that days internet banking & it was credited Mon 23 Sep so it looks like it takes 3 business days to process.

Generally ME Bank are very quick processing Bpay payments to credit card providers & a lot of other payments show up as being received the next business day or in some cases same day so I don't think the time it takes to credit to QF Cash is necessarily up to the Bank.

One good thing is that you get email notification once the funds have been deposited into your Qantas Cash account which saves you having to check all the time if the funds are in.

Another benefit is if someone wanted to free up a credit card in order to do a balance transfer they could move the direct debits from their WWEDR MC across to their QF Cash card to leave the credit card account with a clean slate to do the balance transfer.

Re: New WP 1 Card QF Cash

Put some $s into Euro on Monday getting what I thought was a decent rate - then the A$ kept on going up :-(

Despite paying by Poli, money didn't show up until this morning, so no real difference to BPay.

Also when you load money in a currency you can see the "Buy-Back rates" which aren't displayed when you don't have any money.

As at moment.
Buy EUR 0.7317
Sell EUR 0.6710

XE Mid-Market 0.70036
Spread to Buy 4.5%
Spread to Sell 4.2%

Another data point that does show that for some reason the Euro rates are particularly high.

Those spreads are quite high

Re: New WP 1 Card QF Cash

Here's my Qantascash experience.

Receive a new card in the mail.
Try to activate online, but it fails part way through.
Try by phone, told my FF number is not valid.
Speak to an operator, who tells me that I should send in screenshots. Unfortunately though I cannot reverse time.
A bit later I receive an email saying tech support is onto the problem.
A few days later I reply saying nothing had happened, but there is no reply.
A week later I decide to call again, again I am told my FF number is not valid.
Call again, and this time I am told that my card was cancelled 2 weeks earlier, and that a new one was already on the way.

That was 10 days ago.

Today I call, and the operator tells me that they have no idea what is happening, and that I should call Qantas FF as they are responsible for issuing new cards.
So I speak to Qantas FF, who have no record of a replacement card being sent out, so I am promised another card to be sent out. As I am flying out of the country tomorrow, it seems unlikely that I will see it before I leave.

In the meantime I set up a Citibank Plus account, which took all of 3 days. Qantas could learn some lessons from them.

It is a really good feature, though I still find myself checking constantly as the time nears. :p

I'd like to escalate this for you internally. Please send me a private message with your details.

An app alert would be much better - considering that if you're using it while travelling then you most likely don't have access to email as much as you would data on your app.
They really need to fix the log in problems - takes me 40 keystrokes to log in each time. RedRoo: This is how it needs to be fixed - email/ff# to be saved in the app and you set a pin number (or use the card pin) and that pin gets you into the app. This is how a few banking apps I use do it and it's quite effective.

I tried the card at woolies for fun the other day - declined. Not sure why.

I decided to do an experiment. I was able to withdraw cash fee free from Westpac, but not ANZ (but I got a message warning me of the fee, so I was able to cancel without actually incurring the fee). I was going to try CBA too but there was too big a queue.

I also found on the website that the card is issued by Heritage Bank. Turns out you can only use a normal Heritage card fee free at ATMs operated by Heritage or Westpac Group (incl St George, Bank of Melb etc). So I'm guessing the same is true for the Qantas Cash card. Wonder why Qantas couldn't just tell us that?!

Because its not in Qantas's interest to tell us.

I think it is in their interests to tell us. Otherwise some people will get charged ATM fees and assume there is no way of avoiding them. The fees don't go to Qantas, they go to the ATM operators, so Qantas certainly wouldn't lose anything by making it clear which ATMs are free to use.

Thanks for this suggestion. I'll pass it on to the team. :)
