Heads up about program changes

This sentence implies other changes are coming regarding points earning on partner airlines: "The way you earn Qantas Points on partner airline flights will transition to the same regional framework as the table above. Please ensure Your Profile is up to date so that we can keep you informed of these changes." http://www.qantas.com.au/fflyer/dyn/program/fairer-flying#partner-airlines
Emphasis mine.

I am assuming at this (late) stage we will be "kept informed of these changes" the day before they take effect.

What QFF should have done is increased SC earn on QF for premium cabins only (making J/F disproportionally higher than 2x economy) and changed plat/plat1 qualification to 8 squiggles for non-US/non-EU FF customers.
Then they could leave the oneworld table alone; limit DSC offers/put a cap on bonus SC. This would make QF# premium cabins appealing for those driven by status/points and would justify the commanding premium Qantas charges.
Good idea. It was also mentioned 2 months ago when they announced the changes.

There are so many other ways that QF could have done these changes that didn't require pissing off their most frequent customers.

Mmmm will need to "have a chat " tomorrow. 1/2 of the last (MASA) trip (finally) posted SC's and points , after about a week. The other 1/2 ..... Nothing. More over converted to "Classic" !!! But let's not forget it's supposed to also post as a +50% sc award as well. It's the having to fight and argue with AF that gets me down. They make the rules , but all too often make you prove you obeyed them.
It is a little testing I must say.

Could someone tell me if SC are earned on Hawaiian Airlines and Fijian Airlines and if so how can they be calculated.
I am travelling to the USA early next year and would also like to be able to work out SC earned on American Airlines. Can Mileage Monkey still be used?
I am struggling with the proposed changes and would appreciate advice. Thanks

Hawaiian - no.
Fiji Aiways - yes.

As an approximation, I would take the QF SCs for the route (assuming they flew it) and then half it for partner earn. You won't be too far off the mark with that approach.

As no direct flight PER-HNL, you need to add PER-SYD and SYD-HNL to make a guess, and then it will vary by who you book each leg with. Based on old QFF that would be 40+70 for Y. But under the new system, there is no real guidance because they talk about East Coast AUS to West Coast USA, and I don't think HNL counts as West Coast. If you put in SYD-HNL on QF metal it gives you 45Sc in Y, so goodness knows what you will get on Fiji.

You might like to read this article, as it indicates that AA will be moving to a fare based points earn in the New Year.

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/06/17/business/17road.html?_r=0

You might also note that as an Elite with AA you DO NOT get lounge access in the USA.

Then there's a blogger who notes:
"There has been plenty of speculation surrounding American. When will it follow in the footsteps of the others? Fortunately, American is mired in a merger right now with US Airways so it’s not going to happen soon. I would be shocked if it happened before 2016 since the two programs won’t even merge until 2015."

True, but the original article also says "AA has indicated...to follow suit after it fully integrates its AAdvantage mileage program with that of its recent merger partner, US Airways."

I think this article is good insight into the screwed up world of airline loyalty ;)

The Weird Logic of Loyalty Programs - Forbes

I particularly liked: "Many brands ... conflate the legitimate needs to sell effectively with the drivers of true customer loyalty, often using the nomenclature of the latter to label programs to accomplish the former." Epiphany my friend, epiphany!

Like many other things in life, the marketers have got away with using a term, in this case 'loyalty' to make us think one thing is being delivered, when they are actually doing something else. Loyalty is a misnomer.

Gosh. So many wonderful words. I'm overwhelmed

That is nothing more then the option of that author. There is nothing that shows that AA has said anything related to that. Only that the AA and US programs will combine.
AA might very well wait and see what happens with DL and UA.

Ok - I know I'm coming late to the party here... but I was just playing around with the QF website to have a look at points earning after 1 July.

A MEL-PVG flight as a gold would have previously earned 9560 points. After 1 july it earns 5350!!

That's almost half!!!!

Plus fees to redeem an award are in the region of $500.

That is an outrageous devaluation!!!

That basically kills me ever recommending QFFF to anyone.

And reinforces to me that we must be thought of in the same light as the 'jetstar idiots' who expect to do a couple of flights and get a free one.

Any sign of the partner points earn table yet? Or have they just put that into the too hard basket?

I am trying to find out how many status credits I would get flying from Canberra to Rockhampton under the new revised scheme, but there is no "intermediate" destination available to be chosen. The exact error is: "There are no direct flights or the cabin class is not offered on the route selected. Use the timetable to see connecting flights between these cities".

Weirdly, despite the fact that there are no QF direct flights between ADL and SIN, the new points calculator for 1 July onwards gives a result as if it was a direct flight - 30 SCs in discount Y one way. Also weird that the new points calculator still talks about discount Y when the terminology after 1 July actually becomes "Y or flexible Y" not "discount Y or Y".

I have the same query as Genghicat about how connecting flights will be calculated after 1 July. I have seen that some around here think it will be by separate flight numbers counting as separate flights like they do now but I haven't seen QF confirm that anywhere. It would not surprise me in the least if they change to counting by "starting point and ending point distance" rather than "x to y" plus "y to z" distance. But I hope they don't.

That is not correct. All three things exists from July 1 - Discount Economy, Economy, and Flexible Economy.
