Heads up about program changes

In general, looks like the biggest losers are those who pay for their own travel or work for cost-conscious corporates/govts etc. The biggest winners don't pay for their own travel anyway.
I've hung on to Platinum for a few years since achieving lifetime Gold, but recently retired so looks like I'd best burn up all those points and be satisfied with the lifetime Gold (not sure if that is for my lifetime or Qantas'!!)

Go to the QF T&C's page and click on airline earning table.At the bottom of the post 1/7/14 table is this statement-
* Qantas Segments booked in X, U, Z or P classes are eligible to earn Points and Status Credits only when booked as part of a Qantas & Jetstar Any Seat Award.

So you can book a MASA up to June 30 and still get points and SCs.If flight after 1/7 then at new earning rate.

But, there is a problem - I saw that and thought as you did - see my crossout post #nnn.

If a $100 fare is costing $200 to deliver, then "yes", reducing revenue will actually increase profits.

But that $200 is fixed. You can't reduce the size of plane based on tickets that are sold for each flight. So by not earning that $100, they are actually reducing their profitability even more. The same applies to lounges, facilities etc. Even if there is only one WP on a flight, you still need to maintain the lounge for them. Which is the point i was trying to make, Revenue goes down, operational costs remain about the same = reduced profitability.

The strategy of reducing revenue to increase profits only works if you can reduce your costs too, for airlines thats a tough game, because they can't just reduce their stock levels so easily. The plane still has to be flown, the lounges still have to be offered, the overheads still have to exist.

I'm not sure QF believes that they'll have significantly emptier planes - those that value status will pony up more money. Those that don't care enough (whether that be casual travellers, or those with status today) will continue to buy the cheap fares, but QF won't have the overhead of giving out the extra benefits for those pax. Same revenue - less costs.

Seems to be very straightforward to me.

No but the benefits still have to be offered to *some* of the passengers.

It would be good if the points calculator would also calculate partner earn. My flights are almost always One World Circle fares, so I spend a lot of time on other carriers metal.

Not necessarily - I thought the same as you, see my 'crossed out' post #372.

The table has a caveat which implies the earn rates listed will change - hence my specific and so far ignored direct question to Red Roo.

RedRoo, Why will we be getting fewer points/SC with this change when the only reason we don't fly QF on a sector is because QF DOESN'T FLY THAT SECTOR?

Points spending tonight! Not a good sign for QFF. They told us all that MASA's werent going anywhere!! Here to stay they said.

Lets just hope QFF dont do any more silly things to make frequent flyers unhappy.

At times I am on the only in the QF J lounge in CBR for the last flight out, and I do feel bad that it's kept open for me, but they can't close it until the flight is boarding, so by my flying I am actually reducing their costs, like you have said!

So revenue will go down with less people flying QF, but can QF reduce costs to cover the reduction in revenue ? No

Understand that QF doesn't fly those routes, but they have a points and SC table for those sectors, so why can't they be included?

If you had status, you have earned fewer points on these routes anyway as most (with the exception of AA) don't match the status bonus.

That table is what makes me think they'll start looking at trips rather then each flight for earning. eg, "between East Coast Australia and Hawaii", not SYD-HNL? There's MEL-HNL on JQ, but BNE-HNL? The table suggests it will be treated as BNE-HNL, not BNE-xSYD-HNL. There are many other examples in that table where flights are suggested for routes where QF/JQ do not fly, or would require connections.

Well, since they haven't finalised the points earning on partner airlines I thought they might also adapt their new "Discount Economy" and "Economy" structure to partner airlines.

Enhancements indeed..certainly validates my change in strategy to switch primary program to CX MPC - should make diamond this year after a status match which saved me earning the first 30k status miles.
