Qantas cost cutting.
Delving into the mind of Qantas management

If we fly to less locations we wont have as many customers.
If we annoy our loyal customers some of them will leave and go to another airlines - less customers.
If we have less customers, we won't need as many planes.
If we have less planes we wont need as many staff - we save money
if we have less planes we wont spend as much money on fuel - we save money
The customers that we have left will be loyal, happy to pay for higher class fares and smart enough to understand the new simplified process. Win-Win
More people flying with other airlines will increase their costs and make it harder for them to operate thus levelling the playing field.

Once we make the required cuts to expenses management receive bonus for achieving targets.

The must love it when a plan comes together.

I've added in a bit you missed.

QF codes simply don't exist where I need them to. Bit hard to book on QF codes when there aren't any to book.

This is the problem I face too, I want to fly places that QF doesn't have its own metal or codeshares.
However speaking of codeshares, non-OW codeshares are not that great from a FF perspective unless you are already booked in J, even then non-OW, non-EK airlines can't see your status so the whole recognition part is non existent.
This is why many of us fly OW airlines over QF mandated codeshares any day, the clue here for QF is fix your ties with CX and MH and codeshare with them, not only will it keep OW happy, but pax travelling in all classes would get QF earn rates and elites recognition.

What causes you to be so bitter ????

Bitter isn't the right word, cynical is a better one. Just look at the Orwellian wording of this announcement, "simple" is it? "Fairer" to whom exactly? Yes it might bring QF inline with many other airlines, so it is fair in that respect, but is this an exercise in losing patronage for the sake of being fairer? As i've said elsewhere in this thread, this is nothing but a big "f you" to customers who see QF in a bigger context as part of OW.

Hopefully someone can offer some insights into how this improves QF's financial woes.

I've the same travel pattern as VAN. Im currently in Pakistan, via CX. QF does not code share, either HKG > MNL, HKG > HAN, KUL > KHH, etc, etc, etc, etc,. As I have said before WP1 and other strategies are for those who go to Europe and the States. With the new rules it even reinforces that more.

It's a slap in the face to mention that MASA was a shortcut to status but they continually throw DSC offers around

Perhaps I'm just fortunate - the places I tend to fly, QF flies there: LAX, JFK, LHR, HKG, HNL

And thats fine. If QF offered more flights to destinations (particularly those closer to home in Asia), perhaps they could screw earn rates on Alliance partner flights with much less criticism from FFs.

Unfortunately, these are just the "hubs" for the Karachi's and Kolkata's of the world. Even worse, when you do 15 to 20 legs a trip, trying to add QF codeshares! The price is often more than tripled. My last trip, 14 legs, adding in QF and codeshares was quoted just over $19,000. I got it all for under $7,000!

I haven't required nor done any MASA nor DSC to re-qualify this last year. I regularly fly J in QF and OW partners for work, and discount Y for holidays. I have also been having trouble redeeming the QFF points from all those travels, either the redemption is not available on the dates I wanted, upgrades not available due to my booking class, over-the-top tax on redemption booking, etc. etc. etc. It's been a while since I actually wonder why I bother earning all those points at all, rather than crediting to AA or CX for example (with their superior redemption value).

Post this change, I won't be able to retain my WP, so I may as well fly whichever carrier who would appreciate my business, making my QFF matter much simpler, as they wanted. To be frank, all these "simpler" wording in the latest announcement sounds like an insult to me.

So from Perth to HK on CX in J the SC drop by 20! There is no other sensible way out of Perth to get to Hong Kong.

if I go on to LAX on CX I'm getting penalised again.

Also the new qantas earn tables refer to "North West Australia". There is no West Australia!

May I remind Qantas that there is shortly no more international flights from Perthl

This really is cough.

i feel a CX status match request coming On.

How will you go about getting a CX status match? I have been thinking more and more about CX or AA as a change from QF. I will never reach Platinum one because I can't get enough status credits on Qantas marketed flights. This is just one more push toward some serious decision making.

"This evening, Qantas will announce some changes to the way Frequent Flyer members earn in the air as of 1 July 2014. As a community that is most familiar with our program, I wanted you to be one of the first to hear about the changes...."

Haha, good one, you almost had me there. But April Fool's day isn't for a few days yet... :-|

Adelaide being classed as "east coast" is crazy. Just another reason to regard QF as a SYD and MEL airline.

My regular routes are ADL to CBR (sometimes via SYD) and ADL to SYD. I don't have a PhD in chart interpretation, but it looks like I will take a SC hit big enough to push me down from Gold to Silver..
Add to that, it is already hard enough to book QFi flights from Adelaide on a decent tin, and now we can't even book MASA.

Will save myself big $$ and fly with VA or a Star Alliance carrier, have a better chance of hitting WP and be able to take advantage of better website functionality (+hotel bookings, mystery flights etc.)

Sad day for QF.

Because I prefer to pay for a service from a company that employs large numbers of Australians, rather than large numbers of Singaporeans, Chinese, etc etc.

And your definition of "inferior" may be different from mine. I put safety ahead of all other considerations.

I'm very glad to hear that you value safety.

Here is your "safety" culture in action:

It's a slap in the face to mention that MASA was a shortcut to status but they continually throw DSC offers around

MASAs were a way of incenting members to reach for status, fly more, burn points and pay Qantas cash.

DSC offers were a way of incenting members to reach for status, fly more, either by burning points and/or paying Qantas cash.

I assume both were introduced as revenue enhancement mechanisms.

Now, with MASAs disappearing they are out of favour (I'm not counting on any DSC offers in the future either) because Qantas assumes that enough people will fly with them even without these incentives. Ie, they're now seen as a cost rather than an investment, as foregone revenue. If Qantas is right, then they made the right business call.
