Uggh only been in this game a couple of years, looks like I backed the wrong horse. Sorry if this has been asked already but if I use my QF Gold card but put a different loyalty number on my ticket can I still enter the lounge?

Definitely better than done it for a couple of decades, a suppose. And yes, you should be able to access lounges while crediting the flight to another program.
 
Anyway, in more general terms I remain of the view that most people who booked MASAs were motivated by SCs. And I remain of the view that most of the people who are upset about the end of MASAs are upset because they think they'll struggle to keep the same status now. As I said right at the start, I totally understand why those people are upset. On the other hand, if people want to be objective, I think they need to acknowledge that there is a downside from QF's point of view of them gaining status in this way.

Again, you are wrong: had Qantas discontinued mASA, I would have agreed with you. The problem is that they have bundled (botched) so many changes together that it penalises the vast majority (expect for the top 1% who always fly Flexi-business or First). In my case, I never, EVER, attained or retained status due to mASA. And with the changes, I am not sure if I can retain even Gold (ALL my flights are self-funded, and hence in discount economy). Even if I have CBR-SYD-CBR, or CBR-MEL-CBR, on weekly basis, I will not qualify for WP ever again. Qantas has told me my custom is not important to them, as I do not buy tickets in the fare bucket Qantas believes all customers should. I reckon they should rename it from Qantas "frequent" flyer program to Qantas "Elite" flyer. Message received, loud and clear.

So looked at the circle asia trip I have coming up.When booked it was going to earn 500SCs-D class.
Same trip if booked now for travel after 1/7 would earn 340-360 SCs.Difference is the BKK-KUL sector on GCM is 754 miles but I will be surprised if QF doesn't have it at 749 miles!
How did you guess? Qantas have it at 749 miles exactly! ;)
 
AND.. you have to do this about 6 times to get WP status. You end up spending nearly $5K more on the same seats compared with classic awards. For what extra benefit?

It is possible that Qantas may have done us a favour by eliminating the possibility of all this status chasing nonsense. It is going to save me a fortune. And I will still be cluttering up the J and F lounges.

He gets WP status that he wouldn't on Classic Awards. Am I missing something?
 
Nope; EK serves NZ very well with their A380, thank you very much! No incentive (or no balls) to compete with EK.

EK serves AKL with their A380's. But that's the one part of the country I generally don't fly to. I also don't feel like flying up to SYD to get on a EK 77W. And QF don't serve CHC from MEL, so it's always NZ or VA for me.

As the video implies, Qantas knows quite a lot about you, and your behaviours. How hard would it be for them to pull the records on people that have done JASAs that invlolve a same day turnaround in Townsville, and have a look at their overall value to Qantas? I would say that Qantas have a pretty good handle on all these things. The game may have been fun while it lasted, but now to find a new game.....

If someone had booked two one way JASA's in separate pnrs then that wouldn't show when they're flying back however why does it matter where someone did a same day return or not? If you flew BNE/xMEL/xPER/KTA stayed one week before returning does that somehow make a JASA more legitimate vs a same day return?

I have never been to KTA however for those who have I don't agree that doing back to back JASA's is "rorting" the system because that implies that what people are doing is illegal when their booking is perfectly legitimate.

It's possible to get WP by not even setting foot on a QF aircraft eg if all flying had been on OW carriers overseas & the four 'squiggle' flights had been on JQ by paying for a plus bundle. At least the people who've been to KTA have actually flown on QF.

It would be naïve if not a little arrogant for an airline whether it's QF or anyone else to think that customers will stay because it's too difficult to start again at the bottom with a rival airline.

Some people wouldn't even need a VA status match to get lounge access immediately courtesy of the recent EY status match or if they have an Amex Platinum charge card & if they don't have either of the above VA's generous family pooling scheme will get them there without too much effort.

Whilst a lot of people could justify paying maybe 25% more in cash on an international JASA if it meant getting points & SC, I cannot personally justify paying ridiculously high amounts of airline imposed fees & charges plus taxes for a Classic Award to get zip in return.

If you're not going to earn points on award travel you'd be better off crediting flights & credit card spend to AAnother program that has much lower taxes when you go to redeem. You also get much more bang for your buck as you can go further for less miles too.

Loyalty these days is an interesting thing as once upon a time you had to get runs on the board first before an airline rewarded you with status however in the 21st century the tide has turned and a number of airlines allow you to 'try before you buy' and are happy to give you a status match allowing you to sample the delights the competition has to offer & whether it's worth 'jumping ship'. Now it's a "walk up start" and as many people have found, grass is indeed greener on the other side of the fence.

The demise of MASA won't take away any of the pricing benefit for this route. Without doubt the J/MASA is the thing that makes it super attractive. No different than your bog standard status run to KTA or TSV......you just end up in a better destination.
You missed the point, for me it's the generally cheaper all up cost by going via NZ.

That's why I posted the bog standard Business fares.

It's 192k return + ~$1000 for a JASA from Oz to LAX, to do the same from NZ is 168K plus ~$800.

The former earns up around 41K QFF points, the latter 52K QFF points. So a net 151k v. 116k

Factoring in the cost of the initial T-T fare I am well ahead - additional status earn has been a side benefit.

PS - I have never been to either TSV or KTA, not have bookings for them.

Is this xASA argument still going on?

I'll say it again QF makes money (at a decent rate I suspect) by issuing and redeeming points,it was not cheating them in anyway. I'm open to seeing some evidence otherwise, but I doubt QF will ever relaease such figures.
 
It's been how many days now since the enhancement? I'm over it.

Just booked a Classic (for 2 pax) ADL-SYD-MEL-ADL FOR 96,000 a saving of 32,000 and about $350 to $400.
We wanted to return via MEL so that we can hang out in the lounge there for a while, see who is around and maybe guest somebody in as well.
The 32,000 points I have just saved will almost pay for another Classic ADL-SYD-ADL at 48,000 or buy me a glass of Grange or 2 plus I have a few hundred in my pocket. We are still sitting in the pointy end, get priority boarding, in the J Lounges SYD and MEL (ADL does not have one). As for status we have given up as it will be harder to get or keep anyway and we can now buy BFOD for international travel, use our complimentary HSBC QP passes or our Signature Card complimentary Priority Pass lounge access.
It's all starting to sound like another First World problem.
 
So how many status credits do you lose today buzz? All that hard work to disappear shortly :-(
 
I haven't read all the posts on this thread so this comment will have most likely been made previously, but the toughening up on status is most likely a good thing for genuine frequent flyers. For years, almost all and sundry have been given status by gaming the system (not a bad past time, I agree) but frequent flyer perks are by definition, supposed benefits for frequent flyers rather than infrequent flyers. Infrequent flyers can receive similar perks but they have to pay for J or F. An airline wanting people to fly their metal when available is understandable IMHO.
 
For those of us that have never used the system to gain cheaper SC`s to gain or retain platinum I agree this new enhanced program is fairer. I for one will benefit from the new system maybe reaching platinum 1 instead of just platinum and retaining it, by just doing what I have been doing the last few years.

It's fairer for those who are too lazy or disinterested to take advantage of these offerings.

mASA's also encouraged people to part with their points instead of hoarding them, thereby reducing QFF liabilities.

Why would I burn points if I wasn't going to gain some benefit from them?

Bit of a one eyed generalisation there, don't you think? Have you ever stopped to think many genuine FFers don't need to game the system and I doubt those people are either lazy or disinterested. I do take your point that many of the games appear to have been, for some years, airline sanctioned though.
 
I just can't understand why Qantas didn't do a true simplification and consolidate the various QFF redemption options into one single, simple redemption. Goodbye Points + Pay, Classic Award & xASA. Hello to "Qantas Award Booking".

- Qantas Award Bookings earn status credits equivalent to either discount economy, discount premium economy, discount business or discount first levels.
- Qantas Award Bookings earn no QFF points.
- Qantas Award Bookings redemption costs reflect the dollar cost of the fare and scale up or down accordingly as per the dollar cost.

This would truly "simplify" the redemption aspect to QFF. I'm sure there are plenty of ways to simplify the "earning" aspect of the QFF program (both in terms of points & SCs).
