Hey Qantas, why is it that ....?

...... you don't start the IFE until we are up in the sky unlike some airlines?
Etihad is an example. You can start watching movies whilst still on the ground.

It depends on the aircraft. I had started watching a film on an A330 from HK before we even left the stand.

Yes, on various QF flights you can start watching before takeoff, as long as you don't mind the endless interruptions of FA announcements, the safety message etc. I sometimes think its not really worth it...

True, but I wanted to get through the film I had chosen as soon as possible in order to get my head down straight after meal service, so was prepared to endure the interruptions.

I think a lot (if not all) of the international A330s are activated at the gate. I think it's the same on the A380 if I remember correctly but you obviously can't have the screen out for take off on that Skybed.

Qantas, why do you have the volume turned up so much for your announcements?
When watching a movie and there is an announcement, I have to rip off my headset to prevent my ears from being damaged from the loud volume of the announcement.

What headset? If you're using certain brand noise cancelling headsets you must switch the internal switch to "Lo" on aircraft to reduce the volume.

I see many people wearing Bose headsets rip them off quickly during announcements - they mustn't switch the switch.

If you have the switch, older QC15s and QC3s don't.

My Bose headset stays firmly plugged into my iPad. No pesky announcements for me!

Hi Deka,
I have the Bose QC15s and I do have them set on the "Lo" setting.
All that I can think of, is that with the noise-cancelling I listen to a movie at a very low volume and then the announcements just appear to be louder?

Why won't they let him into the lounge  He is Gold after all, and I have seen plenty of children in lounges. Is it in the "rules" that you have to be accompanied by an adult?
I know that in Australia anyone under 18 has to be accompanied by an adult - something to do with the Qantas Club liquor license.

You can however ask for a voucher to use in the terminal if they don't let you in - I remember getting a $30 voucher a couple of times in Melbourne (a while back).

Hi Aussie Flyer,
I don't think that this will help me too much if the plane is going to crash anyway :-)

actually it does, and can save your life. most aviation accidents are survivable as you saw by the Asiana crash at SFO. had passengers been in a brace position they estimate far fewer injuries.

but if you wish to exclude potentially life saving announcements, do you sit by the window so as not to interfere with the safety of others?

It's more how an accident is reported IMHO. A small issue may be reported as an accident, but not really endanger a pax's life.

Either way, the brace position will not save you from the majority of crashes, other factors will.

Oh so brace'ing during a crash landing is a big lie invented by the airlines?

No I don't think so at all. It will probably help save peoples lives and reduce injuries. However I have watched a lot of "World's Deadliest Crashes" etc. and always envisage the plane going down in a ball of flames. In this scenario the brace position will not help that much.

The brace position doesn't help very much, but it's better than nothing - and in a crash, I would take anything that's better than nothing.
