Hey Qantas, why is it that ....?

woahhh.
so if you're Qantas Platinum or PlatinumOne and say, flying in economy on qf flight number with ek metal, can you use the Emirates First Class Check In?

That is correct:

Whether flying internationally on Qantas or Emirates, as a Qantas Platinum or Platinum One Frequent Flyer you will be able to check in at your leisure through First Class Check-in. You may also choose the Priority lane (where available) when boarding your Qantas or Emirates flights (with a QF or EK flight number).

QF are not the ground handling agent for EK & therefore don't have access to the EK checkin system to check you in.
So what happens when I am in Canberra and flying QF to Sydney and then a Qantas codeshare but Emirates metal to Dubai/Nairobi. Surely Qantas will be able to issue boarding passes in Canberra and I won't have to checkin with Emirates in Sydney?

They can't even issue a Jets*#t boarding pass when flying ADL - MEL (QF) - NTL (JQ) so what hope have you got

According to this page, Qantas and Emirates Partnership | Qantas it is a " A seamless customer experience" so I would imagine you can get your boarding passes through to Nairobi in Canberra.

ha ha,, I find it hard to believe that anyone would think that Qantas is "A seamless customer experience",,, unless of course you find bad service a customer service.. Qantas is a low cost airline charging a full service airline price.
imho

The big difference with that scenario is that when you are travelling a QF flight prior to an EK one, as there is an IATCI agreement in place you will get both QF & EK boarding passes & be able to through check bags to the final EK destination.

This would apply to any airline who had an IATCI agreement with QF irrespective of whether they in the same alliance or have some other marketing agreement in place eg CBR QF SYD AC YVR (same pnr).

This year I had two international flights (Jun and Sep) with ARM-SYD QF flights on a separate PNR to the EK flights. At ARM airport on both occasions they checked my bag all the way and issued all boarding passes to the EK final destination in Europe. It certainly was a seamless customer experience and different to previous years where I had to collect bag and go to check in desks at SYD. You should have no problem doing the same, even if not on same PNR, though you probably need check in at airport and not use OLCI.

Sorry doubt that. Just because you have a QF flight number doesn't mean you are on a QF flight. Check-in at SYD is at the EK counters so....
so how can Qantas issue boarding passes in Canberra if they can't access the checkin system - doesn't make sense...

It would appear that they can. perhaps they are limited from making any changes though, I have experienced this with other carriers interlining. Anyway surely QF can answer this question if you contact them directly.

There is another funny thing with QF which was once on the chaser showing how one can board an aircraft without photo ID ! using the online check in yet on the flip side at a check in counter they will ask for photo ID and not your FF card ( once all my check in we're with Ff card)

I am not disagreeing with you or that if on EK metal you have to checkin at the EK counter. I just trying to get my head around the computer access - if I've been issued a boarding pass I must surely also have been checked in - so how does it work. Perhaps Qantas issuing a boarding pass then generates a message to Emirates who then do the checkin - same when other airlines issue boarding passes, never thought about it before.

The same applies for VA...

One member on here was so offended to be asked for photo ID as he normally isn't asked for it...

My major concern has been answered - I don"t have to go to an EK desk in order to be checked in and get a boarding pass. the rest is idle curiosity as to how it physically works and I rather suspect that only the techos would understand that not the help line......

Have never once had them ask for photo ID in three years of flying weekly - and frequently having to use the checkin counter because of the bane of my previous job, the oversized baggage item that had to go nearly everywhere with me. Always just handed over my FF card.

So there is plenty of inconsistency around which goes to show Mr A J still needs a lot of work to be done. Him or preferably somebody else as the share price is still at historic lows at 1.15 spot price when writing this piece
