Hey Qantas, why is it that ....?

See I would have thought that but it is all dates in the month before and month after. It is as if the system reset the prices for the block of time. They would not have sold out in the span of a day for the entire block.

Qantas had a sale on to the USA which ended 10 February. Its really that simple!

Yeah, but it works the other way too. On Saturday I bought tickets on a CBR-SYD flight for this Friday and they were $152 a pop. Today the exact same tickets are listed at $119. Prices go up, prices go down. You just have to know when they have bottomed and buy them then (just like picking when the stock market has bottomed).

Otherwise, you buy the tickets when you want them and don't look at the prices again (it will just make you annoyed that you have been ripped off).

Except for domestic tickets, I always find that fares are cheaper with vendors other than the airlines themselves (I use BYOjet, Jetabroad, lastminute). The price difference can be hundreds of bucks on J class fares.

This advice is from SkyScanner about the best time to book:

Here are Australia's Top 5 destinations and the best time to book:
United Kingdom - 1 week in advance (11% saving)
New Zealand - 6 weeks in advance (15% saving)
Thailand - 5 weeks in advance (13% saving)
Indonesia - 6 weeks in advance 15% saving)
Singapore - 15 weeks in advance (15% saving)

I've checked and can't find advice specifically on the US though the 6 week rule seems to apply. I don't know if this works with Qantas though.

At the moment I'm looking at J class seats to Canada for Friday and they are cheaper now than they were in October last year. Do I chuck my Y class tickets and upgrade so I can get some sleep? Sorry, I'm rambling.

I guess because of leave and the such sometimes I cant wait until 6 weeks to book. But thanks for the advise....I think I will stay the course and wait.

Also have a look from another computer or Incognito/Private-session browser. Your cookies from the last session can be read and price adjusted. CX is notorious for this.
There is a discussion thread somewhere on this site for this

Wow that's nasty
You've just opened my eyes a bit more. Thanks for sharing that.

in this case though it's quite simple - the Qantas sale ended and the non-sale pricing kicked in again. There was no 'resetting the system' or playing funny buggers with cookies or anything else. The sale dates are available on the website, they are not hidden!

OMG, I had no idea that kind of thing went on. Defo using Private Windows in Firefox for price gathering from now on and then use a normal window for the actual booking.

why is it that in the latest points newsletter qantas would list it has been awarded the best economy class with a link to 'read more' which then tells you that the

  • best premium economy
  • best business class
  • best first class
  • best inflight entertainment and
  • best long haul airline

all belong to your competitors??!!

Who won the PE award?

I was looking at prices for a Syd to Mco trip a couple of nights ago and it was hovering around the $8500 mark for the 5 of us going. Today I have a look and it is $10700 with no discount being offered. Is that normal? It seems like Qantas sets the price on what every they feel like on any given day....or is it just me.

Clear the cache on your computer and try again. I reckon their systems remember what you look at and bump the price up. Might be paranoid but worth a go ???

Rubbish. I explained what happened already. There was no conspiracy . The usa sale ended feb 10 . Simple. A new sale was launched a few days later.

...that when you substitute a 737 in place of a 767 all your plats end up at the back of the plane. Sigh....

Only if you have pre-allocated seats that map to 737. Eg 23F, 24D etc. 23J, 24J, 25J, 26J don't so you are left without seat allocation. Still not desirable but a little easier to notice when you are checking bookings for relevant seat allocations.

What happens when it's the other way around? Do you get to keep your row 4 seat? ;)

Not quite but would be nice.. :p

P.S. From memory I have never had a 737 substituted to a 767 on a domestic flight.
