Currently I can't get higher than the Relaxation Room for an upgrade and would guess the rate has a lot to do with it. Although I do prefer this room with the larger TV that is mounted higher up for watching movies in bed. I still have a few more bookings for this month so hope the upgrades keep coming.

Property: Conrad New York
Booked: Deluxe Suite
Rate: 296K points five nights stay (5th night free).
Basic suite cost was $US300 or ~$AU400 per night.
Received: Hudson River View and Executive Suite.

This is not a typical Conrad, firstly it's an all suite hotel (used to be Embassy Suites) so even the most basic rooms are spacious with separate living room.

Unfortunately service at this property is not up to the usual high standards known to be found at other Conrads. No welcome email sent so I contacted concierge letting them know Amazon will deliver few (large) packages under my name. When arrived to check in the concierge already left, was told they only work until 7pm. Apparently Manhattan goes to sleep at 7pm so there is no need for concierge services later than that...
Front desk staff didn't know anything and couldn't find all my shipments (which was a worry since there were some very expensive items inside). Had to wait until the next morning to sort everything out, very unprofessional.

At check in received one level upgrade to Hudson River View but was promised one night at an Executive Suite to celebrate our special occasion (this time we actually had something to celebrate).

The Hudson Suite was good size but didn't feel at all luxurious. Cheap decor, looks OK if it was DoubleTree but not suitable for Conrad. Design was bit strange, very small bathroom with one sink and toilet but next to it a huge shower room which was bigger than the whole bathroom!

The Executive Suite we got for one night didn't feel like an upgrade. Living room was slightly bigger but furnished the same, bedroom same size but instead of river view it faced an office building. There was additional large space for hanging clothes and storing luggage. Bathroom was still tiny, inside a much smaller shower and baby size bath. Seriously the bath was too small to fit an adult. Toilet had a separate door which was probably the only "smart" design in this room. As I said this suite was bigger but extra space wasn't utilised properly plus no view so I can't say it's any better than Hudson View suite.

There is no executive lounge in this hotel and buffet breakfast at restaurant was very limited, the poorest selection I've ever seen at any Conrad, both in quantity and quality. Only highlight were the fresh bagels, they were yummy. There is a-la-carte option available for $20 per person (discounted rate for golds and diamonds).

Staff at this hotel were not the most kind and professional. Although we stayed five nights, every morning the same person standing at the entrance to the restaurant asked myself and +1 if we are gold or diamond. Why is it not listed anywhere and is it really that hard to remember guests after the second or third time... Concierge wasn't helpful with restaurant recommendations, going by TripAdvisor ratings instead of providing some local knowledge and also gave wrong information about Uber, saying its more expensive than taxi, which proved to be incorrect.

The hotel is located in downtown, very close to One World. Some may like the location, personally didn't mind it but I guess most tourists would rather stay closer to midtown.
There is an open roof-bar on the top level with nice views but it's tiny and was overcrowded during our weekend stay.

Bottom line, nice all suites hotel, good value using points (also some decent P+P rates 30K + $US125) as long as expectations are not too high because it's a Conrad only by name and bathroom amenities.

Property: Conrad Singapore
Booked: Classic King
Received: Executive King

Checked in early at 8am and was escorted up to the executive lounge. They really like doing that in Asia, guess it makes some guests feel VIP but personally I think it's a waste of time. Hotel was heavily booked and only rooms available so early were Twin or King smoking. +1 can't stand cigarette smell so we took the former until non-smoking King will become available later on the day. Tried to ask for suite but since our stay was more than one night I knew chances would be very low and indeed no suites available, instead got two level upgrade to Executive room.

I like coming back to this hotel, short ride from the airport, good location close to MRT and shopping centre. Rooms are large and fitted with most needed amenities. Diamond amenities were chocolates, fruit, water and couple of bears. Only thing missing was USB connection. I realise the hotel is old (17 years if I'm not mistaken) but they should have at least added an alarm clock with built-in USB as found in other properties.

Service was kind and professional by all staff who are clearly trying their best making guests as comfortable as possible.

Extensive buffet breakfast in the restaurant included Asian, Indian and Western choices. Executive lounge main room is quite small and gets crowded at peak times but they are well prepared and open few extra rooms near by so no issues finding a seat.

Swimming pool area is large with plenty chairs and a bar but feels dated and needs to be refurbished. Was told an extensive renovation of the hotel will start soon. I'm looking forward to see the end result wondering if they'll lift this property to the luxury levels of other Asian Conrads like Tokyo or Seoul.

Taxi to/from airport ~$20, Uber ~$15.

I do like this practise I must admit. A couple of reasons, only one of which is DYKWIA

- If the front desk is busy I hate waiting for ages
- It gives me a chance to break the ice with the EL staff
- On a few occasions its provided an opportunity to discuss a room upgrade in a non rushed and no pressure way thats ended well for me.

In my case it usually happens after I've waited in line at front desk. I'm already there, check-in for regulars should take 1-2 minutes instead they do this whole ceremony... I know they do it with the best intentions that's why I'm playing the game and not being rude.

It's well known that hotels in Tokyo can get expensive but almost $1,300 for basic room is a bit much I'd say, even for Conrad.

Interesting the hotel doesn't seem to be heavily booked, most room types still available (at least 4 rooms in each category).

Guess I'll have to slum it at the Hilton :p

26th stay is the charm. Upgraded to relaxation suite at Sydney last night. I was only at hotel for about 7hours, but was a very nice change.

I'm staying there in December with Mr k_sheep and grandmother-in-law. Thanks for the warning about smoking rooms - I'll definitely email beforehand to make sure we get a non-smoking room! I have booked executive king with a rollaway bed - did the room seem like it would be spacious enough with 3 adults?

If you have booked a non smoking room Conrad Singapore will make sure you get one, and this usually carries through on upgrades also. But also worth emailing hotel beforehand to confirm.
Classic King and Executive rooms are between 40 and 43 square metres, so quite large, though a decent part of this is taken up by the bathroom.
I am sure the room will take a rollaway bed, maybe with some adjustment of furniture, but it wouldn't be my choice to have 3 in the room. Others may have different views or experiences.

I may not have been clear in my OP, it's not that we booked non-smoking and allocated to smoking room, they will not do that. We checked in early and our room wasn't ready yet so they offered a choice between two beds or smoking until our room will be ready.
I don't think there is any need to email them about that.
Executive rooms are specious enough for 3 adults.

No luck with upgrade last night at Sydney. Hotel full. Breakfast in glass fine but coffee tax even for diamonds. Lounge last night was very dull. Staff tried very hard. Only half full. Beer and white wines not nearly cold enough. Small amount of sushi, no prawns. Underwhelming.

Property: Hilton Adelaide
Booked: King Hilton Guestroom (base)
Received: King Executive Floor
Status: Diamond
Rate: A$149

2 days before actual check in, noticed room upgrade from King Guestroom to King Deluxe. On day of check in, upgrade changed from Deluxe to Exec. Checked in quite late at night and tried my luck and asked for a suite. The response was "All suites are fully booked". Didn't argue but whilst driving to the hotel, I tried a dummy booking and noticed a number of room types (including Junior Suite) available for booking. I would take it the hotel wasn't that fully booked!

Although room seems to have been refurbished (bathroom), the furniture in the room is still very dated. Felt like a motel.

So what is best procedure to ensure upgrade at HSW for Dia mbr?
Just turn up - they look after Diamonds very well.
...and ask if necessary but normally it isn't.
To be fair, my HSW experience has been different.

I have far fewer stays than you 2, and no personal relationship so I had to ask for a suite (which was granted as it was clearly available)
No love at all at HSW last Sat night - in fact that is only 2nd time ever I have stayed there - both times as Dia - and both times left feeling like a leper.

Upgraded from shytiest cough side view std room to City View Std room - asked is no Suite available - 'No Sir - we are fully booked'.

Exec Lounge was OK - nibbles tasty but what is it with not being able to buy a drink after freebies cut off. Staff said no we cannot sell you a drink - you need to pick up house phone and call room service and they will deliver it up here to you and it will go on your bill. I didn't mind paying but seems a terribly Irish way to get a drink.

Full brekky next morn and open flow whatever coffee you wanted - but seriously cold and sterile attitude from staff. Maybe it is just me.

Edit: I should have included booking was a 'Free Night on Hilton' as compensation for a shyteful stay we had at Hilton Paris Opera last June - maybe that was a precursor to the lack of love.

Ah cool. Unlike some hotels (looking at you, KUL Sheraton!) ... I always book non smoking but it's amazing how many times there's a heavy infestation of smoke in the carpet, bedding etc.

Looking forward to it - haven't been to the SIN Conrad for probably 5 years.

Hey CE ... That's our experience.

We do enjoy HSW and a number of years ago we used to receive exceptional upgrades but of late, it seems to be the room booked. We can't whinge but it does re-evaluate our accommodation decisons. There are plenty of accommodation houses better than a "frills Free" HSW!

Hilton Odaiba, Tokyo
Booked: King Guestroom
Received: Premium Executive
I was slightly apprehensive before check-in due to the feedback about this hotel but found it to be superb. The premium executive room came with balcony access and large array of amenities which included Thanh products in addition to the Thomas Roth range. The service especially at the Exec. Lounge was very polished, the lounge itself was very well laid out with outdoor sitting area. Canapes options were substantial and very tasty. In terms of getting around, the U07 Daiba is right in front of the hotel, with connection to the other lines on U02 and U01 stops. When we arrived at NRT, the last hotel limousine bus to Odaiba area had left (last bus leaves at 6:45pm, QF61 arrives too late for this) but we took another bus to the closest hotel and took the taxi from there. The spa and pool are a must-try if you have a chance to. We were given free access pass by the Exec lounge manager and ended up relaxing in the outdoor heated spa pool enjoying the vast views of Tokyo. There’s even a priority queue at the restaurant for Diamond guest at the Ocean restaurant which came in handy one morning. The Tsukiji fish market will be relocating to Odaiba (2 stops from the hotel) in November.

Hilton Shinjuku, Tokyo
Booked: King Guestroom
Received: Junior Suite
After hearing about the dog box sized rooms, I was very lucky to receive the upgrade to a suite. The lobby area seems to be always full of tour groups and noisy. The best thing about this hotel is its location, shuttle bus and the ability to head straight up to the executive lounge to check-in. The executive lounge evening canapes was a bit of a disappointment with minimal options but nevertheless it’s a good place to unwind before dinner. IMHO however, Odaiba wins in terms of quality of stay overall but I’m sure Conrad would be even better but I didn’t stay at the Conrad this time around due to its exorbitant rates.

Hilton Osaka
Booked: King Guestroom
Received: King Executive
Nice hotel and very friendly executive lounge staff. Did a bit of walking around the area and found a Dotombori equivalent eat street nearby which was fantastic. The hotel is right across the road from the Osaka station which is convenient for trips to/from Kyoto. The airport shuttle bus also stops at the hotel and best thing is, you can charge it to your room.

Glad to read positive review about Hilton Odaiba. Will spend couple of nights there later this year, hope for similar experience. Hilton Shinjuku is very average, good to see there is better alternative in this price range.
