Are you sure? The way I read that is if you are on the EL floor (got an EL room) through virtue of buying the room, if you want breakfast in the restaurant you pay. If you are a status member it should still be OK.......

That's a standard executive floor letter they give you. Diamond (and Gold) still get free breakfast in the restaurant.

The first time I got that letter there I asked them about it and was told to disregard the charge.

I also received that letter last November and after enquiring about breakfast in the restaurant I was told that as a Diamond we could eat at the Brasserie instead.

I've received a letter (for diamonds) that said that you can have breakfast in either the restaurant or in the EL. That was for Sydney. Can't remember what the Adelaide letter said. But it looks like you got the wrong letter.

Yes. That's what I meant! :)

I can confirm that Golds and Diamonds can still take breakfast in the restaurant. This applies equally to HOP, HSW and Brisbane from recent experience.

Rate: $304 AAA
Booked: Twin Standard Room (as no Kings available)
Received: Twin Standard Room

Property Benefits:

Hotel pretty full. Executive rooms and suites still showing availability on the web.

No upgrade offered, and when I asked, none given, I pressed and still nothing - no exec lounge either, which properties sometimes give me if exec rooms or other upgrades are not available. Can't see why one of the available suites didn't come my way, but there you are - without ringing the GM, I wasn't going to get anything out of the front desk.

Did receive two bottles of water in the room, internet was free (for gold), no GM welcome, concierge didn't know what a 'turndown' was so I explained it to him and it was received without further fuss.

Hiltons in Aus have, for me, recently started showing a disposition to only give a 1 hour late checkout ... there is always an excuse. Same at HSW, their checkout is 11am, and couldn't give me checkout past 12. "Hotel still full" was the reason ... despite the web showing the hotel being wide open with rates only 2/3 that of the day before (also a good indicator that the hotel had actually emptied).

Breakfast in Nuevo was good, staff good as always there.

My worst stay, easily, at HSW in probably 2 years or so. Not feeling the love at this property any more and will put more effort into examining Hilton on the Park in the future. Recent reports seem to be indicating that HotP has recovered from some service level/status recognition issues they had a while ago so I'll test them out to see if they want my custom or not.

Thanks for the report . Ill be trying HOTP shortly after my past 6 stays at HSW being quite average.

Does anyone know what "Hilton Accessible Room" on the Gold Coast is like?
I'm Gold, so may get upgraded ... but it's $100 cheaper than the next closest room...

IIRC, lovestotravel had an "upgrade" to one and wasn't overly impressed.

I think they're basically the same room, but with a larger bathroom (so smaller living space). I did book one once (as it was considerably cheaper) but was upgraded so I can't tell you what it was like.

My +1 is off to Melbourne Cup at Flemington this year and wonders will never cease, but shes booked on a ........ mattress run! She'll be the first of the swanning_it clan to try HoTP and if she likes it, it may be our summer MEL accommodation due to a pool.

I also have booked HOTP for later this year, rather than HSW. Give it a try and see if they do better. "Not feeling the love" and "average" sum up my recent experiencesat HSW too.

Rate: $275 per night - ANYTIME BREAKFAST
Booked: 2 Bedroom Deluxe Residence
Received: 2 Bedroom Deluxe Residence - Ocean View

Checking in on Saturday, hotel was very full. Next to no availability when searching online in the days leading up.

Lucky to get an upgrade to 2 bedroom ocean view, but no executive lounge. Was surprised with the free upgrade, I really wanted an ocean view so at T-25 I put in a estandby request for one at $50 per night. At check in, I was offered the upgrade but still for free which was nice. Was very surprised as from what I have gathered, the upgrades usually go first to the estandbys.

Got two bottles of water at check-in, free gold internet and turndown of both beds both nights (even though I only needed one). No welcome from GM however and no bucket of beers like others have had at HSP recently.

Normal check-out was at 12, however went down to the desk on the day before and asked for checkout at around 2. He would only give me one hour free, said it was $50 for the other hour. When I showed up to check out at around 2, I had the same woman who checked me in and remembered my name, and didn't charge me for the late checkout so I was pleased about that.

Breakfast in the restaurant was good, glad to have it included in the rate for only a little more than the anytime anyweeknd rate.

Overall very impressed, most staff seemed to go out of their way and did everything they could to help (particularly the woman who checked me in and checked me out - didn't have a name badge though so didn't know who it was). However was a little underwelmed with the lobby area and found the furniture to be a bit ordinary for a Hilton (chairs, bedside tables, coffee table all seemed to be like something from Fantastic furniture).

I've never been to this hotel, nor any Hilton 'residence', but the thought occurs, wouldn't you be getting breakfast for free via your gold status?

From what I can gather on the site preferences, for gold, its only a choice of 1000 points or only a continental breakfast. I got a full breakfast for $10 more than the rate without breakfast so it probably makes for better value and just take the 1000 points.

Yes, good point, its been so long since anyone at a hotel even mentioned this I'd forgotten:

1,000 HHonors Bonus Points per stay or a complimentary continental breakfast for you and up to one additional guest registered to the same room each day of your stay

I generally get a full/hot breakfast with no-one asking anything, no matter where I am (int/dom). Honestly, unless you were the only one dining and/or it was a boutique hotel, I doubt anyone cares enough to pull you up.

Last time someone asked me whether I wanted continental or full was at an SPG property in SYD, and with about 50 or so people in the breakfast area, I doubt any of the staff could tell the difference between those customers who asked for full and those who went with cereal :)

Whilst we're talking about breakfast, I notice that the price of the full breakfast at Hilton South Wharf MEL is now $37 each. Good lord! Can anyone really eat $37 worth of breakfast? Seems an excessive price to me ... much like the $25 or so that many hotels want to charge for internet access.

That's a typical rack price for full paid breakfast buffet at many Hiltons (even around the world, after you convert it back to Australian Dollars), except maybe those in the USA and a handful of others. (But IME that's about line ball price.)

A few years ago the price was $35 (at least at the Brisbane Hilton).

If you had enough time to sit down, I'm sure you could eat $37 worth :p. Remember, the only place out there with better value is probably the greasy spoon. Cafes are known to charge, for example, $15 for an omelette maybe with bread / toast.

That's the buffet dilemma. They've priced it quite well such that you feel you need to eat that much. Many people will not. The price ends up levelling the score across all the patrons, and in the end those who can't eat their lion's share have paid a premium for the variety (but probably not the quality in most cases).

I've heard stories about how some people have bought a continental breakfast and tried to sneak in a plate from the hot selection. They thought they escaped but later the folio was shown to be appropriately updated.

The sign of a good restaurant is that the waiters should be able to know the status of every table under their responsibility. That's excellent when you need them to remember that you ordered your steak medium rare, you specifically demanded pommes puree (not French fries!) and you had a glass of the Barossa Valley SGM (and it needs topping up)... but that also means during breakfast that they remember you elected for continental, which looks suss when they catch you eating bacon and scrambled eggs (if anything, it's more personally embarrassing). :)
