Recommended: Yes. Good staff, good amenities, 5 min walk from the station and ditto to the Cathedral. Laundry was pretty cheap.

Pretty good place, well located and pretty quiet. Very good Plat recognition and amenities.

Property: Mercure Strasbourg Centre Petit France

Room booked: Classic room, double bed
Room upgraded/type: Yes, larger room (and worth it - the standard rooms are tiny)
Rate: $400/night, members flex
Free internet: Yes
Free Breakfast: No
Early check in/late out: I didn't pre request early check in, but not available - room not ready. Wasn't ready to 3pm (normal check in time)
Welcome drink: No
Welcome gift: More bizarreness. Welcome gift was a 500g packet of Christmas-themed pasta.
Recommended. Was OK; very expensive for what it was, but a flex rate and Christmas. Well located abt 10min walk with bags from the station.

Again, an OK place (Mercure). Cleaning was clearly under-staffed. On my floor, cleaners stuff all over the place for most of the day.

Room was quiet, in spite of being on the (pedestrianised) street - two sets of double-glazed windows.

Welcome drink : 2 non-alcoholic in app vouchers
Welcome amenity: Fruit plate

Transfer: Free priority transfer to/from airport

I wouldn’t normally bother with mentioning an Ibis hotel but this is the 3rd stay this year as lowly Gold but treated well.

Each time I’ve easily received a late checkout - great for arvo/evening onward flights to Europe/home.

Plus a free private transfer to the airport.

BUT this stay, they proactively reached via WhatsApp on the day of arrival asking if I needed a private transfer from the airport - which I jumped at. On landing, messaged back and forth to confirming timing and meeting point and off we went.

Previously, I knew there was shuttle service (seemed too confusing) so took a premium Grab (about $20 to go not very far). 2nd time tried unsuccessfully to find the shuttle and settled for a regular Grab in amongst the ordered chaos of CGK. The Private Hotel service collected us just outside the West Lobby door - all undercover.

Booked again for our return home but actually thinking of trying the Mercure PIK (just because there’s a bit more to do filling in time before the evening QF42).
Hotel is fine, don't bother with their shuttle service from the airport. To the airport can be considered but from it's more than a bit ridiculous.

That was the point of my post. The complimentary “Private” shuttle transfer from the airport was brilliant.

The regular shuttle is just not worth the effort.

Property: Novotel Melbourne Central
Status: Accor+ Platinum
Room booked: Superior room
Room upgraded/type: No, although deluxe rooms (next category up) were still on sale for my dates
Rate: $192.5, Accor+ non-refundable
Free internet: Yes
Free Breakfast: Yes
Early check in/late out: didn't require early check-in. Late check-out granted till 2pm.
Welcome drink: Yes, selection of mixers, house beer, house wine.
Welcome gift: Socks, a $20 bottle of red, a chocolate bar, and a bottle of water
Recommended: Yes, but price-dependent. Location is excellent and hard product is very solid, but other Accor hotels are better at the $250+ price range.

Well, I’m currently 4/4 at getting denied upgrades in AU since achieving plat. Let’s see if I can keep this streak up 😄

The hotel itself occupies the same building as the ibis - the Novotel rooms are on the higher floors and have a different set of lifts.

The hard product is excellent, especially if you can get the room for <$200 a night. Location is equally great, 5 minutes from Melbourne Central station.

The bed was nice, but it’s one of those “twin combined into king” beds. The line in the middle is quite pronounced, so you essentially have to sleep on both sides of the bed.

Some pictures of the room:
IMG_4251.jpeg
IMG_4253.jpeg
IMG_4254.jpeg

The bathroom has an external sink, and it’s a bit cramped for 2 people. Shower pressure was good.

IMG_4249.jpeg
IMG_4250.jpeg

Amenities are not pre-supplied in the room, but are available upon request. It took housekeeping 30 minutes to deliver a vanity kit, and another 30 to deliver a dental kit and slippers.

The welcome gift was nicer than average, but the hotel emailed me 2 days before to ask for my preference of still or sparkling water. I asked for sparkling, and was given still.

IMG_4256.jpeg

The staff were very friendly, but I feel like they could be better trained. The first receptionist I called for amenities did not know if they even had vanity kits. And as I mentioned above, 1 hour to deliver some amenities is a bit much.

Breakfast was alright, but nowhere near worth the asking rate of $38. It was a standard continental buffet, with an extra charge for barista coffee.

Would I stay here again? Probably, as the location is really good for a short stay. Depending on the price though, there are other Accor options in the CBD that may be more worthwhile. For example, this is at most $50 better than the Ibis in the same building. The Pullman City Centre also has a better breakfast for Platinums, and nicer rooms - if they were within $50 of each other, I’d take the Pullman (although the service at this Novotel is miles better).

Property: pullman Melbourne on the park
Status: Accor+ Platinum
Room booked: Premium Superior room
Room upgraded/type: Yes, deluxe executive (top floor, nice view of mcg), i think this is an upgrade/not upgrade, as it’s just a premium room on the executive level, i already had a premium room which is supposed to come with a high floor and executive lounge access via platinum. 🤷‍♂️
Rate: Stay+ with $40 co payment, the A+ rate at time of booking was $350
Free internet: Yes
Free Breakfast: Yes, in exec lounge or restaurant, restaurant has more options.
Early check in/late out: didn't require early check-in. Late check-out granted till 12pm, just in-case, requested when I got back in the evening later
Welcome drink: Yes, used for coffees in the morning
Welcome gift: a bottle of ATE Shiraz and box of chocolate. Printed welcome card.
Recommended: Unsure, it’s nice enough but probably too pricey for what it is. Was conveniently located for a function I needed to attend for a couple hours.

No status recognition on check-in, had to ask about everything.

This was a partial anniversary stay and concierge contacted a few days before asking if I wanted anything, I made a request, they responded saying it had been noted on my file, but the request did not materialize so appears they forgot, I was not charged so that’s something, luckily I did not mention anything to Mrs mort before hand .

Property: Homm Saranam Baturiti (Bali)

I booked with Homm directly as the Pool Villas at this property are not loaded on the Accor booking engine. I hadn't heard of the brand previously - it is part of the Banyan Tree group.

We booked a transfer through Homm from Nusa Dua for 850k IDR. The hotel emailed me when he arrived, 25 minutes early. I knew this was much more expensive than a GrabXL (400k IDR) but didn't want to run the risk of Grab drivers repeatedly refusing the 2+ hour trip while travelling with a baby. Despite the additional $45 cost of the private transfer, the driver opted not to use the $1.40 Nusa Dua toll bridge and instead chose to drive through Jimbaran, Kuta and Seminyak, which are stuck in perpetual gridlock. This choice added at least 45 minutes to the trip based on the Maps search I did before leaving Conrad and how long the trip ended up taking. Had he asked I would have gladly paid the $1.40. Unfortunately I was on a work call when we left Conrad and didn't realise he was skipping the toll until we were well into Jimbaran, at which point it wasn't worth turning around. He then proceeded to go out of his way to several petrol stations around Seminyak looking to fill up, but every servo had long queues. Considering how early he was, surely he could have filled up beforehand?

The hotel exterior is fairly understated compared to most Bali resorts. It's set on the top of a steep hill - once you enter the lobby, you're faced with incredible sweeping views of a valley and Mt Batukaru in the distance.

On arrival there was no mention of Accor status, no welcome drink vouchers, no Accor signage anywhere to be seen, and no upgrade for the lower category of the two rooms. No welcome drinks is usually a sign the hotel does not have my Accor number on file, I asked and was assured it had been recorded.

On first glance our villa looked great, although there was no welcome amenity or card.

PXL_20241210_051604201.jpg PXL_20241210_043543948.jpg PXL_20241210_043550488.jpg PXL_20241210_043704164.jpg PXL_20241210_043714329.jpg

Unfortunately, over the 48 hours we stayed, we realised the room has been poorly designed and built. Keep in mind this property was opened 18 months ago.
  • Wobbly basin tap
  • Wobbly bath tap
  • Safe not bolted down
  • Fridge light wouldn't turn off when closed, the glass door allowed the bright blue light to shine all night (fashioned something to wedge between door and sensor so the baby could sleep)
  • Power points not secured to walls (have a video but Imgur is blocking it for some reason!)
  • An absolutely filthy shower window and shower full of dead bugs on our first day (it clearly hadn't been washed or used in a long time)
    PXL_20241211_001647374.jpg
  • No towel racks or hangers in bathroom
  • Hot water completely broke on our second night and didn't return until the next morning - overnight maintenance could not fix
  • Shower door hinge has sagged and drags along the marble (?) floor
  • Bi fold doors out to pool deck are very difficult to open due to a rusted track
  • Once you're outside, if you shut the bi-fold doors it is impossible to open them again as there's no handle on the exterior to pull the doors out towards you
There is only a single One Bedroom Pool Villa in the resort, and we knew the Two Bedroom Pool Villa was occupied so we did not ask to change room. As I type this I regret not asking for a downgrade and partial refund.

On service standards, all staff were polite but it feels like there have been some really poor management/policy decisions...
  • Just two bath towels and a single floor towel were provided for two adults and one child. Asked at reception for face/hand towels and was advised the hotel does not stock them. The hotel provided a third towel for the child but this felt like a pretty basic oversight considering housekeeping put a crib in the room.
  • On requesting extra water bottles, we were each room is only entitled to two 600ml bottles per day. Anything further would be chargeable. 400ml of drinking water per person in a location with non-drinkable tap water is simply unacceptable. I ordered additional chargeable bottles and prepared to debate this at check-out, but the bottles weren't added to the bill...
  • When the hot water stopped, we had just bathed our infant in a half-full bath of luke warm water. On the off chance this used all the hot water (it didn't on the first night) we initially waited for the water to heat up. After 30 minutes the water was still ice cold, so we called the front desk. It took several attempts to be understood, including spelling "hot water" letter by letter, presumably for them to use a translation app. The front desk sent someone who ran his hand under the tap (apparently to confirm we weren't lying), checked the fuse box (the fuse had not tripped), then said he would look at the water heater and come back. He never returned. 45 minutes later we got a call from reception saying it couldn't be fixed and they could prepare another room but it wouldn't be available until the morning. Three hours later, before going to bed, I confirmed there was still no hot water - but it was miraculously back in the morning. There was no mention of the issue at check out, and I didn't have the energy to bother raising it considering the experience we had through the stay. Instead I'll be sending feedback on all the above to Accor.
  • Laundry was charged at exorbitant ($3-5) rates per piece. There was a local laundry directly across the road offering same-day wash and fold for $2.50/kg, we washed 5.5kg of clothes here instead.
On the positive side, the breakfast selection was quite good considering the hotel only has 81 rooms. They had made-to-order soup and omelette stations, quite a few Indonesian options, basic hot western options, multiple fresh juices, decent bakery, pancakes, waffles and bao. The breakfast location also overlooked the valley. Unfortunately the coffee was undrinkable (and I'm a daily instant coffee drinker)

PXL_20241210_231614818.jpg PXL_20241210_231135356.jpg PXL_20241210_231612063.jpg PXL_20241210_231556397.jpg

We saw max four other groups at breakfast and rarely anyone else in the lobby - occupancy seemed very low. In one interesting exchange, a couple arriving just in front of us had to explain their ALL Diamond membership entitled them to breakfast, as they weren't listed on the breakfast inclusions list. Another sign of poor ALL recognition really.

We also dined at Samiya for lunch. The food was tasty and well presented, and the Accor Plus discount was applied with no fuss, but most dishes were around $25 each and beers were $10-15 before discount, so very expensive by rural Bali standards. There were a couple of Warungs nearby offering mains for $5-6, and we ate at nearly all of these in just two days - so you'll run out of alternatives quite quickly.

PXL_20241210_060106625.jpg PXL_20241210_060015127.jpg PXL_20241210_060011608.jpg PXL_20241210_060152372.jpg

In summary, I was really disappointed with Homm. I think it has 4.5-5 star potential but in it's current state closer to a 3.5 star reality and definitely not worth the rates we paid. I can't recommend it and am still perplexed at how this property has a 4.8/5 rating on Google from 532 reviews...

Absolute chalk and cheese with the Homm stay posted above.

The suite was excessive for our needs, but the bath was very useful for bathing the infant before the flight back to Australia.

A welcome amenity and minibar stock arrived about an hour after we checked in.

PXL_20241212_062319872.jpg

2 x welcome drink vouchers were provided for the primary room. We redeemed these on the rooftop bar, which we had entirely to ourselves, and enjoyed a free (!) game of pool while watching the planes land and take off. The drink voucher could be used on absolutely anything on the menu. I considered the Macallan 12 Sherry Oak but wasn't sure how enjoyable it would be in the Bali heat and humidity.

PXL_20241212_082842645.jpg PXL_20241212_083124278.jpg PXL_20241212_083312494.jpg

The EL spread for afternoon tea and evening drinks was very impressive. At check-in I was told only guests in the primary room were eligible to enter the lounge, but the attendant saw me part ways with my travel companions at the door, and asked whether they would be joining. I said I didn't think they were eligible but asked if she could check - sure enough the second room was listed as eligible for lounge access on her end. So we all enjoyed a few more drinks together.

I used ALL points to pay for almost the entire stay, but ended up earning ALL points back from the stay equivalent to if I had paid the whole amount in cash. Bank error in my favour!
