How to make enemies...! [by weighing carry-on]

I think the shock is that they are doing it at all. If you can't trust people then you have to introduce rigorous policing.

I agree.

Whilst the carry on limit is debatable, and thankfully with airlines you can choose whom you fly with (where my speeding analogy doesnt quite work), that doesn't seem to be the biggest issue on this thread. I do agree that QF probably should have higher limits, but if I choose to fly with them, then I pack my carry on accordingly.

Most of the grief in this thread seems to be that QF are actually enforcing an existing rule.

All carry on weighed tonight. I’d already weighed mine and knew it was 5 kg. Only one BP scan and meagre preference given to PB. Plane running 30 minutes late so far. Melb airport. They were dragging people out of PB lane across the normal line to weigh their luggage then people had to try get their way back again while people were surging forward.

FTFY.

If QF wants to consistently weigh 7kg bags domestically, and won't give preference to J or P1 flyers ... then I'm over to VA

Quite a harsh decision. I had 2 flights on weekend and no sight of scales in BNE or SYD.

P.S. the grass isn't greener on the other side it's actually the same shade of brown but the growth is starting to get thinner.

There's now some apparent clarity over on ausbt.com.au on what this is all about.

It's the newer 737s with the drop-down "pivot bins" or "space bins" type of lockers.

The cabin-crew often has to close them - by pushing them up. If too heavy, they can apparently be injured.

Not sure about the Qantas 737s but Boeing state that 6 standard bags can now fit in "space bins" instead of 4 in the "pivot bins". That's 42kg at 7kg each or 60kg at 10kg each for "space bins" and 28kg at 7kg each or 40kg at 10kg each for "pivot bins".

VA plat here, have held status the last 3 years.

I’m consistently being asked to weigh my carry on (pelican backpack hold two computers) lately... if fact at check in at BNE this morning the agent said my backpack looked overweight.. I told her it always is...

Weighted over by 2kgs... let me go..

VA were weighing carryons at checkin at MCY on Sunday 4/11.mine didn't get weighed but I had weighed it at 6.7Kg so OK for VA.Several bags ended up being checked despite protests.

I really want to know what happens if I legally cant check items and they tell me to check them. ie lion batteries. I routinely carry more than 7kgs of these alone for work.

Also, are they weighing both your personal item and your carryon? is it both below 7kgs? or personal item isn't defined properly by QF or VA?

And has anyone been asked to pay yet for the extra bag, if they were at their max checkin weight with their already checkedin bags?

Saw this happen for the first time today in BNE.

The Cabin Manager was the gate police, and was physically picking up bags to make the call whether it was over the limit or not.

He mentioned he was “part of the project team trying to reinforce this policy” because “of the increased incidence of injuries” ... “but it’s been policy of Qantas for 35+ years” (now why it’s 7kg doesn’t seem reasonable). I encouraged this Manager to take the feedback of how it really isn’t customer first ... and to examine airlines that have higher weight limits (or none at all, (BA)) to see if there is a difference in injury rates “to crew when adjusting bags in the overhead compartment”.

Apparently, the head of the project team is Ashley Stephenson ... which linkedin suggests is the “Head of Finance” ... An interesting person to be head of a project team like this (not an HSE member).

So again, completely agree with the subject line here.

Or just train crew to flick the little switch on the side of the bin that makes it easier to push up into place.

FYI BA introduced a weight limit a few years ago.
It’s 23kg per piece for hand luggage. One laptop bag or handbag and one roll a board size suitcase.

I agree wholeheartedly with others here that this haphazard implementation of weighing is a frustration and hopefully disappears into oblivion.
I’ve never asked for or received help with loading or unloading my cabin baggage.

But that's very logical: when the project objective is cost savings, who better to drive it...
Bet an increase (or even retention) of customer satisfaction is not in the project benefits.

Your average passenger would not be able to lift a 23kg bag into an overhead locker safely without significant risk of it landing on someone's head and causing significant injury.

I agree and I haven’t really seen any 23kg bags on the BA flights I have taken. Nor have I witnessed any injuries. I think the vast majority of people are sensible.
Have seen many very heavy bags on AA who have no published weight limit for carry on baggage only size limits.
