If the issue really is around safety, why is a 7.1 kg bag on Qantas more dangerous than a 10 kg bag on Jetstar?

So, post the 17th, are people finding QF weighs every time? on the VA side it still seems hit & miss

Just passing thru BNE domestic at the moment, public announcements and extra QF staff and scales happening and even a few CASA staff (may not be related) over on the QF side, walked thru JQ and TT and nothing unusual there, haven't seen any VA carry on enforcement at ADL or BNE today.

Next QF flights are in February. Not looking forward to needing to check rolling bags. Hope they let me take on my laptop backpack, as it's super heavy but can squeeze under the seat in front.

I know this is a QF thread, but it seems to have digressed to cover all airlines so I'll add that VA CNS today does not appear to be weighing at the gate.

Jetstar not weighing anything last night out of Melbourne that I could see. Planes were packed.

QF not weighing out of Melbourne on Thursday and VA not weighing out of Sydney in Thursday either on the flights I took. Definitely appears to be randomly policed.

I haven't seen QF weigh carry on anywhere. Sometimes I think I'm dreaming all my travel.

At the gate for an early evening SYD-MEL on Monday, QF were weighing all bags, for all pax, without exception - at least as far as I could see before boarding.
They did allow redistribution from my partner’s overweight carry on to my under-weight carry on, though.

To put it in context, since this thread started, I have taken 46 domestic Qantas flights and I have not had my carry-on bag weighed once. Nor have I seen anyone else having their bag weighed.
Judging by what happened when I suggested checked baggage was usually quick, I can now expect to have my bag weighed every flight!

Rolling bag was weighed a couple of weeks ago on a Dash 8 flight ex BNE.

And I've taken a bunch of international QF flights since the thread started but only two domestic QFs - and I've seen it happen twice.
Then again, it's a notable occasion when my Priority tagged luggage comes out quickly! :)

Maybe we need a thread "How to Travel Light"? The laundry seems to be an important issue and for me, I do also tend to ask about a guest laundry (as opposed to an over priced laundry service). One of the great things with HI and HIX in POM is they both have a complementary guest laundry (not overly advertised) which I rate as a big positive over some of the other hotels (especially as many of the PNG tourist activities have a tendency to dirty clothes).
Oh ... we do have such a thread!

The great hand luggage only challenge!!!

It's over a decade old, but the premise remains the same ...

Weighed today on a 737 from CBR-MEL. It was frustrating, I got caught out and that's on me (should have read this thread before). In future I will carry a spare bag and take 2 bags. It seems that QF are trying to solve one problem but creating another entirely.

I fully recognise that I was in the wrong here. 200+ Qantas flights without being weighed meant I wrongly assumed what the boarding process would be.

However, from an experiential perspective with Qantas as a brand, this was a fail for mine. The process was handled very poorly. I checked in at the desk and my carry on was not weighed, just waved through. At the gate they announced they would weigh all carry on. I was pulled aside and made to stand at the front of the queue whilst I was written up with a manual tag.

We were flustered trying to sort out what could and couldn't go underneath. My bag was tagged to go underneath but there was no receipt. It was delivered on board. Staff seemed absolutely miserable and so were we.

So, what would I have wished happen?

1. The check in agent asking whether or not my luggage was under 7kg, advising that checks at the gate have been undertaken recently. (This gives me time to go and sort out bags without the stress of having to do it at the gate). Or even the agent could weigh each piece of hand luggage at check in.

2. Weighing being done in the queue ala JQ & TT. It prevents embarassment, people holding up the entire queue and gives people time to either sort it out (redistribute weight or remove particular items) or agree to check the bag.

This would have saved us a lot of stress and sped up the boarding process.

I know people will disagree in a thread which has had some pretty strong opinions, but I wanted to share my experience.
