hsbc-star-alliance-card-art.pngWhy we like the HSBC Star Alliance credit card

Launched in 2022, the HSBC Star Alliance credit card is the first of its kind anywhere in the world. You'll earn Star Alliance Points which are transferable to a choice of seven Star Alliance member airlines at a time of your choosing. You can also earn Star Alliance Silver or Gold status just by spending on the card, with no flying required!

Once you qualify for the welcome offer and are fast tracked to Star Alliance Gold status with any of the seven participating carriers, you’ll soon be enjoying perks like airport priority lanes and lounge access when flying across the whole Star Alliance network. It is the largest airline alliance in the world with 25 member airlines, including Air New Zealand, Singapore Airlines, United and Turkish Airlines.

Please note that the welcome offer is not available to existing HSBC customers transferring from another HSBC credit card, or if you have previously held a HSBC Star Alliance credit card within the last 18 months. Refer to the full T&C’s for more information:

Newbie here, my first post on AFF-

Have just signed up and been approved for this card just before the cut off phew!

Have a fairly unique scenario and wanting the brains trusts advice!

Wife works for VA in the corporate team so covered there and have lounge etc through her domestically only. Cousin is a big wig over in the UAE for Etihad. So I am covered for Australia and UAE / Europe fairly well in J class but no lounge access as a staff traveller.

Is it still my best bet to select Aeroplan after I meet the spending threshold to collect the 50,000 points? Planning a family trip to Thailand and will fly look to fly J class x 3 tickets and infant on lap. Can I upgrade a Y to J with Aeroplan points on sq? Completed novice with points etc

If you had my scenario what would you do? Cheers guys have been reading lots of threads and loving all the info.

SO applied last night and was conditionally approved. Fingers crossed 50K will apply...
I called HSBC today around 10am as I applied yesterday (3pm) and they confirmed it would still apply. I am HSBC premier not sure if that makes any difference. Got my full approval email about 60 mins after speaking to them.

Anyone else been told they are conditionally approved pending provision of payslips/etc and completing ID verification at local branch, only to then be told the application is unsuccessful once both of those tasks are completed?

Seems a bit disingenuous at best.
This happened to me as well, everything submitted post conditional approval was exactly according to application and was declined for the first time ever. Good income, good assets, substantial savings and a small mortgage. Made zero sense, called for a review and was promptly brushed aside. Worst experience ever and should have known better considering the reviews this bank gets. This has set back my next churn, not that I am a huge churner only 4 cards in the last decade.

Still haven't received the bonus points. It's been over 8 weeks.
HSBC advise that the points come from Star Alliance.
Star Alliance advise that the points come from Aeroplan/Air Canada.
Aeroplan/Air Canada is basically uncontactable from Australia.

Easy to contact Aeroplan from Australia. Use Skype, it's a free call. If you have your gold status, should be a short wait time.

Update:
Have contacted all three parties.

Had to buy an international call plan for $10 to contact aeroplan.
Spoke to a rep, and later an aeroplan supervisor.
They are adamant that they do not release the points themselves, it is a financial product (HSBC buys the points) that is released through them but not BY them. They therefore can't do anything about releasing the points, supposedly.

Star Alliance have just told me to contact aeroplan.

HSBC are adamant it is an aeroplan problem.

Both HSBC and Star Alliance acknowledge that I met the criteria.

Does anyone have any input they could offer regarding this? Is this accurate.
Should I persist with HSBC?

Kind of frustrating having to deal because HSBC has incredibly long call times, Star Alliance are virtually uncontactable (and each email from them is signed by a different person) and aeroplan needs an international call plan to contact them (that said their wait time was quite short).

Maybe a word of warning regarding aeroplan and HSBC. Maybe pick another star alliance partner, I dunno.

Also it makes me grateful for Qantas and Virgin. In comparison, they are actually much more contactable and helpful (even if it doesn't seem like it sometimes).

Just confirming you have checked your Aeroplan account for the points? Others have mentioned how they have just appeared in their account with a prior date and not been immediately recognisable.

Definitely. I am still receiving the monthly spend points, so I have accumulated 17K Star Alliance points in total.

I check Air Canada and the Star Alliance points frequently.

Also @Alex Bear check this morning. Mine arrived overnight, and somewhere earlier in the thread someone concluded they seem to be awarded in bulk early each month.

I looked on Ozbargain forums and was waiting for my 50,000 Aeroplan points past 8 weeks qualifying for Elite 50K status. Fill out a general issue on this Let Us Know · Air Canada Customer Care (Aeroplan / Other)
Got my missing points the next day.

Can an additional cardholder be granted star alliance gold status too? I looked around but couldn't find an answer.

Just checking once you get the email you have qualified for gold it takes at least 2 weeks for your star alliance status to be reflected in your chosen airline.

Yes. I believe it's because they're actually giving you a two-week warning of a deadline to set or reset the status airline. FWIW, when selecting Aeroplan, the actual status was granted within a few hours of the time after the two weeks elapsed and they notified me of sending the request to Aeroplan.

I’ve just spent my min spend for Gold so we shall see how long my Aeroplan points take. I applied the day before the deadline and was fully approved the day the campaign was ending with the 50,000 points. Hoping I don’t have to fight HSBC or Aeroplan!
