hsbc-star-alliance-card-art.pngWhy we like the HSBC Star Alliance credit card

Launched in 2022, the HSBC Star Alliance credit card is the first of its kind anywhere in the world. You'll earn Star Alliance Points which are transferable to a choice of seven Star Alliance member airlines at a time of your choosing. You can also earn Star Alliance Silver or Gold status just by spending on the card, with no flying required!

Once you qualify for the welcome offer and are fast tracked to Star Alliance Gold status with any of the seven participating carriers, you’ll soon be enjoying perks like airport priority lanes and lounge access when flying across the whole Star Alliance network. It is the largest airline alliance in the world with 25 member airlines, including Air New Zealand, Singapore Airlines, United and Turkish Airlines.

Please note that the welcome offer is not available to existing HSBC customers transferring from another HSBC credit card, or if you have previously held a HSBC Star Alliance credit card within the last 18 months. Refer to the full T&C’s for more information:

I’ve just spent my min spend for Gold so we shall see how long my Aeroplan points take. I applied the day before the deadline and was fully approved the day the campaign was ending with the 50,000 points. Hoping I don’t have to fight HSBC or Aeroplan!
No reason to think you will. Aeroplan and star have been pretty good! albeit maybe a bit slow for some folk who needed the points a little more quickly!

Partner applied on 2/6 but didn't get approved until 6/6. Any point in activating the card and trying to hit the min spend? It seems like no one has the authority to confirm that those applied before and conditionally approved on the same day but approved later would be eligible for the 50K aeroplan points.

They've already taken the credit file hit and were presumably getting the card for other benefits besides just the 50k points (which they will still get), so why not proceed and see what happens.

To me it can read either way. Apply by x date and subsequently be approved and you are eligible, realistically the only thing the consumer can control is when they apply for the offer, the approval process is at the mercy of the bank.

Thinking this through logically the campaign date should have an end date with an approval safeguard period, If I apply at 11.55pm on the night of the cut off there is no way I can be fully approved (income verified etc) whilst the campaign is still running….It would be unethical and misleading. I would say with a fairly highly level of confidence that as long as you applied in time and then went on to be approved you are eligible.

I have spent the required amount, paid the bill in full, now awaiting confirmation of status from either Aeroplan or HSBC. Hopefully soon.

For ~ $4,000 AUD it looks like you can buy 192,000 points. This is enough for two business class return fares to Singapore by the looK of things? Not bad
Exactly! Welcome to Aeroplan!

Not just singapore, but that level can get you as far a bangkok.

220000 points gets you return to Europe business, and for an extra 5k points per time, you can add a stopover, each way if you like.

Related - I signed up for this CC just before the Aeroplan expired. In order to do so, I had to create an Aeroplan account.

I've since tried to log in, and it says "Your Aeroplan account has been deactivated". Other than calling the number, any suggestions?

This is my concern as well, I have no way to see if I am 50k Aeroplan points waiting for me....the offer in email said they wouldbe delivered in 6-8 weeks. I applied May 23 but didnt get to activate until June 4th, 1 day after the promotion expired. I called HSBC, they said talk to Air Canada. Air Canada said talk to Aeroplan. Aeroplan told me to contact HSBC. Sigh.

I guess give it a month or so and lodge an AFCA complaint if necessary- I don’t work in credit cards but I am GM for Australias biggest asset finance brokerage and I know how hard AFCA work for the consumer, easy to argue it is misleading. But I am sure we are concerned about nothing and they will arrive in due time.

Have you received an email stating you have met your gold status and been ask to select a partner in star alliance yet?

I was asked to pick a partner in Star Alliance at the beginning and have just gotten my first bill, so no not yet. I guess I will let it ride and see what happens. Something not right with this though, seems like a disconnect between HSBC and the loyalty programs. Thanks for your feedback!

An update on this and to serve as a warning to others, make sure your purchases satisfy the $$ and don't include the excluded items. I had a couple Bpay purchases that I included in my 4k spend and these are not included. I only realised yesterday when I was still awaiting confirmation of status from Star Alliance and chased HSBC up as it had been 3 weeks since my last statement.

I will now meet the spend today, but the required spend won't get assessed until the next statement cycle and I will probably miss out on using the Gold benefits for my European trip unfortunately.

No no! As soon as you hit the qualifying spend u should get the email!

No need to wait for the next statement.

I got the eligible spend wrong too. But once righted got the email to choose my program.

That gives me hope, thank you. I'll see what happens and report back. That next statement part was just told to me by HSBC.
