Great idea Dr Ralph :)

But I think 75 mls is way too much!

If you have 10 bottles of Wendouree and everyone gets 75 mls that means everyone will drink a whole bottle each over the course of the tastings.

I don't think 40 mls is unreasonable.

If you aimed for 15 tastings per bottle that would be 50mls each.

Based on the experiences of the events that Wozza / DB etc. have organised in Sydney:
- you don't want too many people. 10 is a good number. Many more than this and it becomes a logistical burden feeding and watering everyone.
- 75ml pours, on average, seem a good amount. Not everyone will want 75ml of a particular bottle, and others will want a second taste. 75ml gives you the flexibility to pour 50ml to everyone, with some left over for those that want a second glass to savour or to compare with another bottle
- I would not worry about everyone having to drink the equivalent of a bottle: I'm sure we'll manage. Most of the other tasting events have involved 1 bottle/person, as each person brings something.

As for date, I'm reasonably open to suggestions from people. This certainly wont be next weekend. I think it will take some time to organise. But I'm thinking maybe June. If it's not June it wont be until at least October as I'll be in the US for several months in between that time.

Leave your keys under the mat....

I'm interested in a trip down to Wollongong for some nice wines. Apart from the weekend of the 10+11th of June (I'm in HK) I'm free so far.

Impressive stock pile... Are they kept in a proper way???

I'm definitely interested in this Dr Ralph. I've never had the pleasure of tasting a Wendouree, so I'm very keen to expand my horizons.

My thoughts exactly. Convivial atmosphere with like minded people and the ability to visit a city where my father lived and worked in the would be great - can't recall having been to the 'gong before. I'm in. Agree with BettyB and AnonymousCoward about numbers and sampling size.

Definitely interested Dr Ralph depending on dates. Whether I can attend or not, thank you for your generosity.

Great suggestion, Dr Ralph.

I would be keen too - dates, depending.

I'd second what AC has said. I usually poured 50 ml measures and left enough for others to go back to if they wanted a second sample. It also avoids the last person getting a mouth full of sediment on the aged wines.

The 10 person limit is pretty crucial if you are only bringing a single bottle of each wine. You will need a second bottle if you have more (particularly if you are going to bring the aged stuff).

For this his kind of event, I'd say - the more, the merrier. I recall you getting 6s of most of your Wendouree, so I'm guessing bringing two of each would not be a problem if the event proved popular.

The only note of reflection I'd add - 10 glasses of a heavy, full bodied assault on the senses that is a Wendouree might be a bit much in one 3/4 hour sitting, even for the most hardened of palates. Having tried around 10 or more top end Cab Sauvs at the Coonawarra tasting, they all started to taste the same after the 5th. So I thought the wines weren't getting the attention they deserved after a while.

My point - maybe have 5 or 6 Wendouree and mix it up with some Whites, Bubbles and Stickies.

Them's wise words there Dr Ralph, from a master organiser Wozza ;). Some of us could assist with the stickies, Whites and Champagne's, I'm sure (in case your cellar doesn't fully extend to them).

Overall, it is a very generous offer. I've never had a Wendouree, so it would be quite an experience for me to partake in such a layered tasting. Might have to get you up for my St Henri layered tasting later in the year.

Thanks for the feedback so far.

Still looking for others that may be interested.

The more I think about the logistics of organisation, the more likely I think the date will be in October.

I've had a few PM's about WENDOUREE IN WOLLONGONG, so thought I'd provide a general update.

Not a lot of progress since my previous postings, other than I approached one cafe I thought may be interesting in allowing us to hoold the event. Reception was luke warm.

If you get no joy in the Gong, then happy to suggest away for venues in Sydney. I am guessing a trip up to Syd with your precious cargo won't be too tall an order. There's plenty of BYO spots for us to eat, drink and be (slightly) merry on Wendouree and other great wines. :) Just PM me if you want.

Otherwise, best of luck finding the venue. Here's a link to a site I often use when searching out BYO options: https://www.agfg.com.au/guide/nsw/w...ong/listings/restaurants-dining/features/byo/

Cheers, Wozza

How do you stop impulse buying wine cause it's 'cheap'. My situation is getting out of hand.
I can't help it, if there is a deal on and stack-able coupons or a price error that brings a nice wine to 30-40+% off RRP, I just can't not buy it....

Ralphy you might like to suggest to next restaurant that 'Failure to Accommodate' might lead to a visit and delivery of 'The Parkdale Sleeping Tablet!'

I don't have a solution for you I'm sorry (I wish I did!).

I haven't been able to stop buying wine completely. But I have managed to curtail my spending.

I do have price points. Something now needs to be ridiculously cheap for me to consider it.

Remember wine is often 'cheap'. That is, it is frequently discounted. I don't see this situation changing. FOMO isn't really a thing if you realise this. There is always another 'cheap' wine deal just around the corner. I now regard 30% off RRP as the normal price. I don't pay the normal price!

UPDATE:

My partner has suggested that there is a solution after all! Her solution is to give over control of all spending to her (she doesn't drink). I'll ponder that for a moment....hmmm....response - that's not a solution at all!
