IME the HI Darling Harbour is very reliable at recognising status with an upgrade.

The Holiday Inn Pyramides in Madrid recognised my Platinum status and as I was already booked into the highest level of room, offered something or other in the bar area, or 500 points. I took the points.

The welcome amenity was a couple of superior quality chocolates.

BTW, there is a Metro and Renfe stop right outside the HI, which for us made it the perfect choice!

Has anyone heard of an IC room that is 'non-upgradeable' for the purposes of an ambassador membership. I am an ambassador platinum and recently booked a 2br Club suite/Villa at the IC Koh Samui. During the booking process I enquired with IC what room I would need to book to get upgraded to the 2br suite for my stay. They advised the 2 and 3 br suites at the resort are non upgradeable but they would give us F+B discounts during our stay.

Is this a common practice?

I've stayed at Sydney IC on my birthday weekend for several years now.
Use an AMB BOGO.
Book a harbour view suite ( king or doubles ), and in lieu of an upgrade, they provide $100. food and beverage credit.
Last year, I even got a second $100. on the second ( free night ).
Should say, I booked Club access suite.
So, booking cost for two nights was about $700.
Got two nights / three days with Club access and $200. In food / drinks.

Every year for me !!

I don't think this is a standard "perk". I've stayed for the same reason the past few years and never got that when staying in a club suite. Do you check-in downstairs or do you go up to the club and check-in. I've got a birthday stay in a Club Suite in August and it would be nice to get something more than normal.

Only a Plat due to paying $US200 for ambassador membership. The free weekend night pays that off.But they have treated me well.
CP Changi.Booked king airport view.Upgraded to King Premium airport room on top floor.

CP NRT.Booked King bed airport side.
Upgraded to a 2 queen bed suite on top floor airport side.

Back at the CP NRT.At chck in told you have booked aking room but unfortunately none available so I just have to put you in the room you were in last time.Is that OK?
No problems. This has become my favourite hotel at NRT.Had 30-40 stays at Hilton NRT.About a third as diamond, the rest as gold.Never treated as well as at the CP.

IC O2 Greenwich London
May 2019
Status: Platinum (not Ambassador)
Rate: Club Rate 249 GBP (1 night)
Booked: King Superior
Received: Suite
Benefits: points or drink at lower bar, 2 x water

Due to underestimating how long it would take to pick up our hire car and travel through London, we missed out on our lounge benefits. The man at check-in did say "We can go upgrade crazy" and we were very pleased with our 15th floor suite with great Canary Wharf views. We enjoyed a couple of (quite pricey) G+Ts in the topfloor barwhich has good views as you would expect. Breakfast in restaurant also very good (black pudding will win me over every time). All service outstanding.
I found it a really good hotel; I generally prefer to be in the bustle of London but the tube is nearby. Obviously a great spot for concerts at the O2. On the other hand, I was surprised it was over 20 minutes to the Excel conference centre. I'd strongly consider it again
