Increased aviation security at Australian airports

??? *looking over my shoulder to see if Im being punked*

I'll bow out and accept the opinion here that it was terrorism then, but only as I'm heading out so don't have the time to argue with you, however will leave these blurbs here:

Queensland University of Technology criminologist Mark Lauchs said it was important to not describe the siege as a "terrorist attack". Lauchs said Monis was simply a deranged person running a hostage situation. "This incident was not about religion and neither was it a terrorist attack, but given that perception by the paraphernalia Monis used."

Prof Greg Barton (from Deakin University) and Dr Clarke Jones (ANU) told the inquest that Monis was a loner and had mental health problems, and was desperate to attach himself to something.

In 2016, Monis was cited as one of a number of recent violent attackers who were mentally disturbed and operated under the justification of Islamist ideas or slogans.

But I digress, I'm off-topic and late for an appointment.

Why the fuss?

AFF is about air travel. People should take their thoughts to a more suitable forum if they don't want to be challenged on it.

Fuss, sure. ;) AFF is also about wine, credit cards and a lot more, and thank goodness for it. The bit about being challenged is a bit of a non sequitur, isn't it?

Its simply that your earlier post appeared to imply it its a 'Libs' thing when we talk about terrorism and its threat in Australia. Labor has a bipartisan policy on this, as evidenced by their time in power and Bill Shorten's recent explicit statements. That much shouldn't be controversial, surely.

To bring us slightly back on topic, two datapoints today from colleagues:
SYD Intl 630-7am, no queue at all, literally 5 mins and through
MEL VA 330pm, no queue at all

I'm doing MEL-SYD return tomorrow and will update then.

Ain't academics wonderful :)

Yes! But! I'm always highly amused by the panoply of 'terrorism experts' who pop up in the media and for 10 s grabs on radio and TV promoting their 'opinions' as some sort of confirmation whenever there's a discussion or an event. Most appear like flies in minutes after an event sprouting some theory or other, then you never see them again when the full analysis of the has unfolded.

The Sydney event has been a great source of ravings from those who make their living out of increased expenditure on 'terrorism'.

It's good to see that some proper sane Australian academics have provided a thoughtful analysis of the event and mental instability during the recent hearings.

{a few quotes to the effect that the guy was disturbed and looking to attach himself to something}

What does it matter if he was mentally ill? He used IS ideology to justify what he was doing! That to me makes him a terrorist. In fact, I'd argue that most terrorists are mentally deranged if they think it's okay to kill innocent people who are just going about their lives in the hopes of inducing fear to achieve their aims.

BNE-SYD this afternoon on QF and no queue.

Tuesday afternoon is not as busy as Monday mornings, excluding school holidays.

There continues to be scant evidence that flights are being delayed.

A better test may be Friday between say 1600 and 1900 hours, or next Sunday afternoon/ early evening at a similar time.

Of course, this could simply indicate that airlines are not holding departures for 'stragglers' and instead rebooking them. Advice from anyone who has experienced this in the last day or two would be great, as it is one of the missing pieces in the puzzle.

my favourite quote is my tag line, "You own 20 pairs of shoes, but only one pair of glasses? What do people look at first, your feet or your face?" In my view, spectacles and scarf can add so much to your style for little expense. A scarf or spectacle frame is the cheapest way to get a brand name look. My wife has about 8-9 spectacles and 30+ scarfs. :)
If spectacles weren't so expensive I might be able to afford more than one pair/year. And that's already factoring the $200 rebate from Medibank Private.

Unfortunately there are many who are mentally challenged.
Yes 31288 attacks by Islamic mentally disturbed persons since 11/9/2001.Only 1249 such mentally disturbed incidents this year with 8972 fatalities and 9334 injured. But hey the majority of victims are muslim and extremely few Aussies so of no account.

Yes, I'm sure there was talk that he wasn't actually aligned to them, he just had issues and didn't know where he fit in. Didn't he try to align himself to both al Qaeda and isis, who are both completely different and opposed to each other? Suggesting that he wasn't actually aligned with them at all.

But then both are extremist Sunni organisations with the disagreement from Isis that al quaeda didn't go far enough especially proclaiming a caliphate.

Yes I do tend to agree with you. But to lay it at the door of a wired religious belief is not warranted. Anyone who wants to take a life for suppose 'religious' beliefs is by definition mentally deranged. But, it's all too convenient to label acts as 'terrorism' then spend billions of our taxpayers dollars on agencies, ridiculous air port security that is more show than effective, more bureaucracy, etc, just to alarm the population and make political points to get reelected. (And, unfortunately, that applies to both major parties, who are too scared to address the nuances in the discussion). Combined with a number of Breitbart commentators in local media screaming rubbish over the airwaves, the 'promotion' of the terrorist ideology is exactly what such people want, plus what the polies need instead of proper policy.

Data point. MrP took late flight tonight ADL-MEL to allow extra time after work. HLO. Through security in less than five minutes. Nothing additional.

Oh- don't say, are we back on topic here in the thread?:shock::lol:

Arrived Melbourne QF check in at 4 am for 6 am Flight.

Que to the automated general check in nearest International was well outside the door and into the International terminal. Asked about check in for Business and Priority and advised it was the far end of the Terminal near group check-in. One group waiting but no one allowed to use the priority as security had not started the x-ray machines. Waited till 4.20 till they eventually opened up. A lot of confusion with no policing of access rights with bronze status being processed. Eventually was through at 4.28 am.

The lounge, as expected, was not open so went for a walk and returned 10 minutes later to see that they had indeed opened the lounge early. Well Done Qantas :)

It was disappointing to see that none of the food outlets were open to serve any one when I looked again at almost 5 am. Surely they could organise to be open for passengers who may have been waiting and in need of a cold drink or a hot cuppa.

Sydney T3 6.15am. I would think a good 30 min queue for non status passengers. They are currently calling for 7.00am departures to come forward

Just announced, one of the people held over this airline threat has been released without charge.

Yes first it was police went in with limited info = bad
Then police didn't go in earlier = bad

Government makes it a big news story = bad
Government initially decided to keep it quiet and build a stronger case = bad

Cant have it both ways
