iPhone, Android or Windows Mobile??

It's funny how much we all rely on our mobiles devices for more than just phone calls now.

Alarm
Camera
Organiser
Emails
Net access

Oh and phone calls of course

I never trust my phone for important wake-ups though! So if I have a meeting/flight/appointment, I'll always set a back-up alarm on my cordless phone.

Sleeping in for work is okay from time to time, but can't afford to miss a meeting/flight etc though.

So always have a backup :)

I use my phone for:

  • Alarm
  • Camera
  • Organiser - limited to important task reminders/appointments - rarely more than 6 a year - not work related
  • Net access - Limited - e.g. the new version of AFF will not load.
  • phone calls
  • texts
  • Torch (put it into white face calculator mode :p)
I have had it since September 2007 (now on 2nd battery)

But then my experience with appointments and dates in corporate provided outlook makes me doubt that Microsoft are much better. I clearly remember 1 or 2 years ago when all my appointments moved by 1 hour on the daylight savings change over. Just crazy! so we've moved the clocks by 1 hour why in hell would I want to move my 4:30pm meeting to 5:30pm.

I've also had a similar thing in the outlook calendar of a PDA, change the timezone to europe and suddenly my meeting at midday moves to 4 am. Sure I realise changing timezone is a difficult issue because I might have had a teleconference in a different timezone and would have had to call at 4am, but still.....

I actually do very well with multi country meetings in outlook and have never had major issues with the daylight savings changes.

I always set the time of the meeting to be time in the location of the meeting. So when I go to the UK and I start booking meetings I set the timezone for that meeting to be UK in the meeting itself. So when I change timezones on my laptop or blackberry (when I used it) to be where I am everything works fine. You can even set meetings with two timezones (start and finish) - which is useful for flights...

I think the daylight savings thing was a one off (or 2 off) but it is still hard to believe that anyone would think it was a good idea to move meetings by an hour to compensate for daylight savings. It totally screwed up my recurring meetings at the time.

Clearly the multi country thing was operator error. I'll have another look. Thanks for the tip.

If you're interested - there are a couple of 3rd party Java apps for the SE phones. One is "Light" (similar to calculator trick), another is "torch" (Uses the LED next to the camera to light up somewhere. Note that this one could prematurely wear out the LED...) Torch k800 k790 k810

Considering it’s happening in China, I’d guess they’re creating a botnet as the most likely scenario in that article.

Good to see an open system with third party app stores is finally getting the attention it deserves :)

The report noted:

"Lookout researchers said that so far they have only found the tainted software at third-party apps stores targeting the Chinese market. Legitimate versions of the applications in the official Android market appear to be safe, they said."

Which means it's no different to downloading illegal software on your PC - chances are you'll get bitten at some stage. (Have friends who've downloaded software that has totally crippled their system, via ****wire.)

If you went to a legitimate app store like Androidmarket, you might have to pay, but at least it would be legitimate and trojan/virus free.

(And if you aren't into the gaming scene, you're pretty well safe from this particular virus, if the report is correct.)

I don’t think that’s the implication at all. I understood it to mean that marketplaces that aren’t the official one stocked the infected apps. Now it’s Androids choice to have multiple marketplaces, and in this instance it has resulted in users being susceptible to attacks.

I did not take it to mean illegal app stores, if so then it’d be akin to saying iPhone users had been infected from a jailbroken app store, and you’d have thought that would have happened by now (has it?).

If the stores they were referring to were actually illegal ones, I think they might have said so, rather than simply stating 3rd-party, don’t you? When has the media ever been cautious with the wording they use?

Jailbroken iPhones can be susceptible to trojans. I believe it has occurred, but can't find any links.

I just remember reading a report here in Thailand (in a recent IHT from memory) that the infection was caused by *re-packaged* copies of the apps.

As I said, if you download from non-authorised/sanctioned sites (regardless of the OS you're using) chances are, you'll get burned. (If the Apple app store wasn't closed, I'm fairly sure a lot of IPhone users would visit other sites also.)

So it's better to be safe rather than sorry and visit the *sanctioned* sites, rather than a site that happens to be there offering something that's too good to be true.

Living inside the Apple eco system seems to work fine for me. The limitations I have are not the apps but the hardware - I just desperately want some form of good stylus input.

Ok, but (one of) the issues I have is that Apple can restrict content. For example, "overly sexual content". Now I don't care myself if the Appstore has adult applications or not (I wouldn't be downloading them to an iPhone), but I believe that consumers should have a free choice.

As a real world example that doesn't contain adult content, if there was a WikiLeaks application (for example), then Apple could quite easily ban/block it just like other American companies have been blocking Wikilinks associations.

Then gain, Android has a "kill switch" for apps they don't like as well and can remove them...

They have a choice - dont buy an iPhone if they want pron. Take cars for example - I might want a bright pink merc but merc wont sell that as it is not consistent with their brand. Now you could get it resprayed but don't expect manufacturers warranty on your new paint job.

They have blocked/withdrawn the wikileaks app.

They have blocked/withdrawn the wikileaks app.

They did, but I don’t believe it was for the content, but because the app was asking for donations within the app, and that’s not allowed, and they knew that. If the app simply connected users to Wikileaks Apple would have had a much harder decision.

As distinct from a Monopoly?

Well I don’t see what the issue is, you know there’s only one place you can buy apps from when you buy the phone, you’re not being forced into it afterwards, so where’s the issue. If your disagree with it, as you do, you simply don’t buy the phone, but you don’t then complain and call it a monopoly, because they created an eco-system that eliminated potential threats… that’s just sad. And a bit troll-ish.

No - they confirmed it was because no app could be connected to supposed illegal activity not the donations thing.

Trollish?? WTH? Shows the gulf between some "true believers" and those with their feet on the ground, when one feels the need to throw an insults to 'support' their POV. :-|

Anyway, how altruistic Apple are then, saving their customers from the big bad world!

Personally, I believe they did not create a monopoly/eco-system to "eliminate potential threats"; in my opinion they created this setup to ensure their profit is maximised. Any other related facet such as this can be used as marketing.

FWIW, I do have an iTunes account.

100% correct Serfty. Apple creates things as they do so they have total control over every aspect. They have been like that since day 1..Why do you think no 3rd party makes Mac computers?

You don't have to disagree with something to realise that it is a monopoly.

As already mentioned, if apple weren't making heaps of money, I'd be more inclined to believe that they set up the itunes store out of the goodness of their heart.
