Jetstarisation of CNS Routes

They removed two really well timed flights and replaced them with Jetstar, I'd imagine is the issue.

Anyway, perhaps someone can explain to me why from Brisbane to Hamilton Island you need to fly Jetstar (leisure route?) but from Cairns to Hamilton Island you can fly QantasLink (also presumably leisure)? It doesn't seem to fit their whole mantra of pushing customers to Jetstar for leisure routes.



Reasoning is probably that Cairns is a regional centre so CNS-Hamilton is a regional flight.

Interesting that if this is true that there has not been a ruckus kicked up by the local CNS media. I had a quick look and there was nothing in the Cairns media about JQ replacing QF services to SYD.

There was some stuff about some encouraging numbers of Chinese tourists coming into CNS, which is very significant given the high AUD and lack of capacity to fly into CNS from anywhere except Japan. Although I have heard the limited CX services from HK do very well for CX.

If this is true - I think QF have totally misread the CNS market, and are effectively surrendering it to VA and possibly China Southern in the future....

Still plenty of Qantas seats available even in December. I'd doubt if one booked QA they could change it to JQ.

QA? That's exactly what QF did two weeks ago. The options then were to accept, change flights to QF or cancel. If there are no QF flights then one of those three options disappears. However, I remain to be convinced that this is an accurate report. Time will tell.

Thats exactly what QF are offering as an alternative to the flights cancelled last month:

For customers holding a Qantas (081) issued ticket:

Passengers may, without fee:
  • Re-route/Re-book travel
Re-route travel between Sydney and Cairns on Qantas or Qantas marketed flights operated by Jetstar.
  • Change Destinations.
The value of the existing ticket can be used towards the purchase of a new ticket. If the new fare is more expensive than the existing ticketed fare, the fare difference is payable by the passenger. Applicable surcharges, fees and taxes may apply.
  • Retain the value of the ticket in credit
Retain the value of the ticket in credit for future travel within 12 months from the original ticketed date of departure. If the new fare is more expensive than the existing ticketed fare, the fare difference is payable by the passenger. Applicable ticket surcharges, fees and taxes may apply.
  • Refunds
    - For customers who have commenced their journey a refund of the affected sector(s) will be available
    - For customers who have not commenced their journey a full refund will be available

Booked award tickets HNL/SYD/CNS for May next year for the 2 of us to arrive back in Cairns instead of
overnighting in Sydney, both flights on QF, not Jetstar. Received a call Sunday arvo, due to the
SYD/CNS flight cancellation, now putting us up overnight in Sydney and then fly to Cairns next
day on QF.

Interestingly I was having dinner with friends last night (who are unaware of my AFF addiction).... And they brought up this very topic!!

Now they brought it up broadly - but when I filled in the gap and explained the "exact flights" that were being replaced - they were mortified!!

And that's an understatement.

So Red Roo - it's not just us AFFers who have our knickers in a knot.

This really is an A-grade QF$&@-up!

All the CNS based crew (who often crew the flight from SYD-CNS to get home) that I've spoken with lately are wondering how they will be getting home. They are just as miffed by the change as we are. I'm making the most of it while it lasts & doing points upgrades to J while I can. After that, it'll be off to VA for my flights home from SYD after work.

My conclusion is that I'll take the QF flights to Sydney while it works and fits in with my needs. If it doesn't work with QF it will be VA over JQ every time.

This does not sound too encouraging for the future of the crew base at CNS, this could possibly be a bigger part of the story and some of the reasons for the Jetstarization of CNS.

I don't really understand why Asian (especially Chinese) airlines don't fly directly into CNS and OOL - surely the Asian tourists would rather go direct?

If I remember correctly the CNS Airport people have been talking about that recently - some of the CNS based members may be more up to date than me but it is on the cards as a possibility.

There is a large amount of tourism from India to CNS a lot of which comes via southern domestic ports. I don't know whether this will continue to prosper under JQ.

Might be a good connection BOM/HKG/CNS on CX instead.

Correct, as I understand from other Cairns posters I have heard that the CX flights are pretty well patronized already so it would be good if CX can stay in CNS, the fares for CX for the CNS-HGK are never particularly cheap so that shows that their load factors are probably OK.

And yes docjames - I agree with you. If I was going to LHR from CNS my options would be:

1. Cathay Pacific CNS-HKG-LHR then maybe
2. China Southern CNS-Guangzhou-LHR
3. Jetstar CNS-SYD change terminals, baggage, immigration etc then QF SYD-Singapore-LHR

Airline Route are reporting that JQ are now doing all CNS - SYD services:

JetStar Boosts Cairns Operation from Sep 2012 | Airline Route

If the information from Airline Route is correct, then one of the JQ flights that operates Mon/Wed/Sat CNS/SYD as JQ016 is an international flight (KIX/CNS/SYD) so it would be more than likely that you could get your bags through checked CNS/SYD/LAX or DFW and just remain airside at SYD Intl having cleared outwards customs in CNS.

Unlike flounge runs for people flying QF to JQ35 & not being able to obtain their JQ boarding pass obviously the other way around is not going to be an issue as if JQ couldn't issue the SYD/LAX you could get it in the Flounge as you'd be a transit pax due to your onward intl flight so there would be no orange 'D' sticker on your JQ16 boarding pass ie no need to clear customs in SYD as a domestic pax.

JQ016 CNS 0720 – 1015 SYD 332 Mon/Wed/Sat

Ex USA to CNS you could either take QF8 DFW/BNE 2155/0500+2 which is daily according to the QF website then connect BNE/CNS on QF798 0700/0925. QF16 LAX/BNE 2345/0645+2 daily except Mon then connect on QF782 0945/1210.

The SYD/CNS intl flights wouldn't allow you to have as much lounge time however you would only be a transit pax in SYD & not clear customs until CNS due to an intl to intl connection.

JQ015 SYD0700 – 1000CNS 332 Thu/Sun
JQ015 SYD0800 – 1100CNS 332 Mon

Normally on the Wednesday Qantas 0530 flight CNS/BNE once a month.
Twice this year the flight has been cancelled and offered the later QF flight which
am unable to take due to timings.

Qantas if this flight goes the same way as CNS/SYD, will be moving to Virgin.

Happened again, QF799 on the 8th of August is no longer. Was on the same flight last
week and it was chockers. What gives?

I hope this is not right. SWMBO, her brother, his wife and I have QF flights booked in J SYD to/from CNS in March 2013. Are you saying that these flights will be replaced by JQ and therefore no J?

I hope this isn't right (JQ is to take-over all QANTAS operation on this route) SWMBO, her brother, his wife and I have booked J SYD - CNS and VV in March 2013. Are you saying that this flight will be conducted by JQ and therefore no J? Or have I missed something? I am already booked with Virgin to/from SYD - HTI and VV because QF won't fly there. they're slowly getting all my business.
