Losing QFF points and calling in the media

except when breakage come in lower than expected ... hence many CC removing or reducing award points for ATO/utilities.

On direct earn credit cards there is no breakage for the bank to take advantage of. The airlines get that. One of the reasons banks were not happy about Qantas forcing it on them.

Question.

Sorry, as a VA FF not 100% sure of how I interpret the QFF program T&C's.

My father has effectively 'retired' from flying and had a number of QFF points in his account that have sat idle for nearly 18 months. Given their expiry is imminent, I've transferred them over to my husband's QFF account which was also (until a last minute accommodation booking) under threat last year (apologies to the QFF loyal flyers out there....we've just aligned ourselves with VA). Reading the QF T&C's of transferring imminently expiring points, just wanted to clarify that the points that I've transferred from my father's account to my husband's account won't actually expire provided my husband's account remains active? Am I correct or is there something else I need to be aware of? We're not talking sheep stations here, but would like to keep them if at all possible.

Many thanks in advance! SuzQ

I believe that's correct - as long as the account sees any non-family-transfer activity in an 18 month period all the points remain active

There was an earlier case when a significant number of QFF points were transferred to another account as a (Christmas?) present. The account has had no other activity for at least 18 months and at the end of th next month, these points "expired". They got them back but it caused some angst.

Having cancer is a big burden and can kill you. I do think the points should be reinstated.

I suspect the Woolies change did catch a lot of people out, thinking they had been accumulating points and keeping them active. Had a bit of a laugh at the 9700 points being wiped. Can’t even buy a toaster for that.

It's a surprise - Qantas certainly sent me plenty of emails advising me to turn on Qantas Points mode. And from what I have seen, they have been actively trying to get people to turn on Qantas Points mode the whole time....

Sure but we are more alert on this forum. I can’t say I’ve received a whole heap of emails. And from memory they’ve changed it twice now as well. Not everyone is as obsessive as we are here.

They certainly did send bucketloads of emails and so did Woolworths. And as you've said, QFF/Woolies have actively been trying to get people to switch their points earning to points by continually offering bonus points.

Qantas passengers furious after frequent flyer points vanish
What rubbish people are complaining. Regarding the WW change there were certainly a number of emails from both WW and QFF about the change to WR earning and how you needed to select if you wanted the reward points to go to QFF. So what if they go to spam or junk. Surely you can cast an eye over the messages from time to time. Like anything, you need to actively take charge of your accounts and earnings and at least check them periodically. Have no sympathy for them at all.

Bad, why should the points be reinstated for someone who had cancer? It's just a disease and yes, it can kill you, but so can many other diseases. I know many people who have had chemo/radiotherapy etc and still managed to handle the day to day things including checking their emails.

I've received probably 3 emails in the last 6 months particularly about switching from woolies rewards to QFF, then they also put it in their regular monthly newsletters.

Oh you are so tough. I’m normally like that! But I can see some wiggle room for some, but not all, here. Agree re the Cancer issue. It’s no reason.

Points should be reinstated because they have set a precadent with others.

And in my opinion points should never expire. Qantas has profited from the sale of the points and when they expire they have made a profit and have not provided a service. Wrong.

While QF give pregnant women a status holiday, I lost my gold and then silver status through having cancer for 2+ years.

While I earned 350k points in that time, through cc usage the status is lost.

The status may be lost but the points have been retained which is perhaps the main thing. Maybe QFF should look at other cases where a status holiday is available like serious health issues with a Dr Cert but I can see it turning into a situation where people who are just not flying for a variety of reasons want the same. Losing status is disappointing but it's the points that have caused the big outcry.

JohnK, to split hairs I don't think its a precedent for just reinstating points. QFF have set challenges that require some earning within a time frame to allow the points to be reinstated.

The non-expiration of points is what really should happen but whether we ever get that...

I completely disagree that QFF points should not expire.

That would mean a company would need to assume an endless liability even when a customer has no interaction with their business services, it does not make commercial sense.

Same here, when I developed a DVT the month before my year ticked up and had to cancel flights that would see me requalify, as I wasn't allowed to fly. Qantas didnt even bother to reply to my request for leniency. And then a couple of weeks later they announced the Pregnant Pause. I was rather angry.

The spending challenges are quite easy and should be afforded to all.

Off topic slightly but my Hhonors expired last year. Close to 100,000 points collected over 10+ years disappeared just like that. They were my hard earned points and I sent email to get them back but now in same position.

Loyalty programs are so difficult to manage when points expire.

I keep getting emails from Qantas saying to change WoW earn to QFF, even though it has been set as such since day 1 of the change and QFF should know it.
