Macquarie Visa Plat - Fee Free 1st yr + 25k Qantas Pts for $5000 spend

Well after several weeks I finally got this reply. It essentially took them a long time to re-hash the same rubbish and not actually address my concerns. This is from the Australian dispute resolution centre.

That is the identical email I got this afternoon, word for word... wonder if you got it from the same Rep? Name starts with E.... (nice lady and I appreciate she is just the messenger here).

Here is my reply I'm about to send...

Hi xx_,

Thank you for the response.

As your response states, Macquarie has no visibility or control over which retailers comes under which category (Supermarket or Petrol). If this is the case, firstly we have to question why would Macquarie release and still offer a product when they know they cannot accurately report on it? And secondly if Macquarie doesn't know which retailers will count towards the bonus points, how are your customers supposed to know?

Before escalating this to the Financial Ombudsman I would like to suggest a solution:

Macquarie award the remaining bonus points (25,000 minus any bonus points already awarded) and revert our credit card to 1 point per dollar spent from there on. If Macquarie is unable to do this, please let me know and I will open a case with the Financial Ombudsman.

Regards,
xx_

I don't have any other tiered spend credit cards (like Amex) - Are Amex as incompetent as this?

Yes, same lady and same sentiments about her.

My response was similar. Along the lines of is there anything they can offer me to sort out this mess. If not, I will take it up with the FOS as well as the ACCC for misleading advertising. I hinted that that I know there is an expense in dealing with these claims for them and it is a waste of my time, and they we would be both better off coming to a mutually acceptable outcome.

Manilla rang me unexpectedly today about my 4 months of no access (with no answers though).

I don't think it's fee free anymore and the bonus's are just more trouble than they are worth. Go for the WW EDR 20k bonus for $89 and 1p/$.

Au contraire, it still says on the website and form fee-free.

Although the bottom of the T&C state: http://www.macquarie.com.au/mgl/au/...AS2&spJobID=60448311&spReportId=NjA0NDgzMTES1

* To be eligible for the bonus points offer, you must be approved for a Macquarie Visa Platinum Card before 11:59pm AEDT 28 February 2013 and opt-in to Qantas Frequent Flyer Rewards at activation of your Card. You will earn 5 Qantas Frequent Flyer points per dollar spent on eligible purchases at supermarkets, petrol stations and utilities (including water, gas & electricity) for the first six months from the date your Card is first issued, up to a maximum of $5,000 spend. Occasionally transactions authorised towards the end of this period may not be processed until after this six month period and therefore may not be eligible for the bonus 4 Qantas Frequent Flyer points per dollar of eligible spend. The bonus points earned each month will be credited to your Qantas Frequent Flyer account within 5 business days of each Statement Period provided that you are not in breach of the Conditions of Use, your Account remains open and you have provided Macquarie Card Services with a valid Qantas Frequent Flyer member number.

Has anyone applied after 28 Feb 2013 and got the 5 pts/$ offer still?

EDIT:

This link offers 12 months to get the 5pts/$ up to $10,000, but the annual fee is no longer waived.

My suggestion to award the net bonus points and revert me to 1ppd has been 'escalated to senior management'...

I don't understand why they are still offering this card with same tiered spend when they admit they can't measure it.

Following on from this, another call and couple of emails with too much time for my liking passing. I sent them one final email saying if I don't hear back by the end of the week (that's tomorrow) that my next call and emails with me to the ACCC and FOS.

Needless to say I was called later that day. Again the same spiel but in the end offered 10k QFF points as an apology. Again I reiterated that making their issues with supermarkets with wrong codes the customers problem is not on.

I'll hang onto this card until the 12 months are up. If they renew it fee free I'll probably keep it, otherwise goodbye and good riddance.

I also made the one last ditch attempt before contacting FOS. Got a different lady call me back, apologised and offered me ~17k points. I accepted.

Good on you !

The best compo I have seen yet from Macquarie !

Beat mine by 7,000 points, too

OK, been following this debacle for a while, unbelievable really! Good luck to those sorting it out.

But, have a look at the following link from original thread post....... Offer is $99 1st yr fee and 20,000pts for 1st spend and additional 20,000 pts for $5000 by 30Nov. This seems one of the best offers out there at the moment. Thoughts ?

Looks to be a good deal. And importantly it looks like Macquarie took on the feedback lots provided (including me) and dropped the tiered spend thing... well done Macquarie.

Personally nothing beats FEE FREE 1:1 points...even if capped to 100K.....bonus points are a bonus.

Has anyone been able to find out how many bonus points they have by ringing them?
I know the excel spreedsheet method but can they tell you on the phone?

Yes, so its now just spend $5000, my only concern is it is $5K of eligible purchases and they dont define eligible.

Jetstar CC do that 5k of eligible spend... I've done that before without any issue.... And Jetstar CC =Mac CC.

[SUP]was reading this Macquarie MPW Qantas Frequent Flyer exclusive offer

it says "an Annual Card fee of just $200, plus a Qantas Frequent Flyer Rewards opt in fee of $50 which is waived for the first year#"

does that mean that $50 is waived for first year or the entire fee? any help would be appreciated. thanks

The landing pages says
