Made any travel mistakes lately?

Been going for daily morning excellent flatwhite at 'Culture' NYC (esp after fire alarm at 0200 ... again). They gave me a piece of delish pistachio cake free yesterday and I forgot to tip. Oh the regret and embarrassment.

I have been finalising my hotel bookings, obviously without the usual amount of care. I wanted to book Wednesday to Friday, Friday to Saturday and Saturday to Sunday. This was to get the cheapest combination.

However, what I booked was Wednesday to Sunday, Friday to Saturday and Saturday to Sunday. I took a few days to discover the mistake. Luckily, I had booked on refundable rates so I think all is well. All rebooked at an even better price.

Dear Lord! After all these decades of travel bookings, I learn (again) from this forum, that I am a babe-in-arms! :)
Must keep up the tutorials. :)

I rocked up to the Holiday Inn at Chit Lom for my last night in Bangkok. The lady on the desk couldn't find my booking and asked if I had the reference number.

Needed the internet code to log on and check which she gave me and found out that I had actually booked the HI at Soi 22. She'd seen it before and wasn't phased. Of course it helped that I was quiet and looked appropriately confused.

Couldn't be bothered with the BTS so took a taxi.

My second mistake, there is widespread flooding on Sukhumvit streets and it took 20 minutes of a very circuitous route to get there. This was explained to me before I commenced the journey so no surprises. And yes I saw lots of flooded roads.

Still here now and will catch the train back to the airport tomorrow morning for my flight back to Japan.

Have been doing that for years for a day by day itinerary of any travel plans (trains planes and automobiles), hotel bookings and what we want to do in the places we visit. Can easily revise hotel bookings too and note ref numbers etc. As I am entering my eighth decade its too much to try and commit these things to my memory.

This thread has made me put all our July plans on a spreadsheet.

We do that too ! :D We both book parts of our holiday and Ron flips the bookings to me and I coordinate it all into an itinerary. Our system has worked well for years !! Especially as we have some things booked for 2019 already - I currently have 6 different itineraries on the go

That's where TripIt comes in handy.

There is no doubting you are a pacesetter. I only have 4 on the go, and my most advanced booking is only June 2018!!! (Note to self - must try harder)

Last week I found I was missing 2 days on my spreadsheet - meaning 2 extra days to do things.

I usually have a spreadsheet but this trip seemed less complex. Then a couple of overnight flights and time zones made me rethink.

I had a really complex one for Alaska which when I had to cancel for health it made it much simpler to do so.

Tripit works even without wifi/data.
Agreed, but I do like a hard copy.

My mistake of the day: Booked a hotel room ages out on a flexible rate. Checked closer and found a cheaper rate so booked that. Then proceeded to cancel the new booking, not the old one. When I realised, the cheaper rate was no longer available. *sigh*

I've done that before. Waited a few hours or day and the cheap rate came back again fortunately.

Mistake: cancelling an AirBNB a few days out from arrival. Their policy is to refund back to account from which payment is made only. I no longer have that card, or an account with the relevant institution. Thus far it's proving difficult to recover that money.
