Malaysia Airlines to join Oneworld alliance

I read somewhere over the past few days - AusBT article maybe? - that yes, OWE can use the Platinum Suite in KUL.

Its looking like its a big no, MH have updated their site to say now their elite and F class passengers can access the Platinum Suite, indicating they wish to keep the normal F lounge for OW, bit like their Plats can access Lobster on book the cook, others cannot.

So I phoned QF to check on availability PER-KUL. It was only available in J on the day I wanted and the points cost was 53k instead of 50k. It seems MH redemptions may have a similar policy to CX where you have to pay a premium.

Which is the standard cost for Partner Classic Awards - the only oneworld airlines which fall under the Qantas Classic Award cost table are AA and BA (and the latter only on flights between SYD/BKK, SYD/SIN, SYD/LHR, BKK/LHR, NRT/LHR, SIN/LHR and HKG/LHR).

I can't find this on their website. I can find info saying that MH Plat and MH F can access the Platinum Suite, but not specifically saying that other oneworld Emeralds cannot.

The new benefit for Emeralds of being entitled to priority security at selected airports.... it's not many of them!

AMM, BOS, TXL, BNE, ORD, DFW, HEL, LAX, MAD, MEL, MIA, DME, JFK, LGA, SFO, ARN, SYD, NRT

...and the three (only three?) Australian airports that offer the "benefit" only apply to selected carriers. For example, ex-BNE, only elites who check-in for QF flights will be eligible for the benefit, even though CX operates from BNE. In SYD, it's only QF and LA. I'm sure each of those "left out" airlines have access to Express Path, at least for their premium class pax, so they may offer it anyway to oneworld elites (even though it's not gazetted).

Noticeably missing from the list (and that do have a "Fast Track" service, except perhaps one of them) are LHR, KUL and HKG. Gee.....

Its funny CX isnt offering the FastTrack benefit to Emeralds in SYD, given they do hand out CX passes to J/ F passengers.
Maybe they need to renegotiate with the airport authority or something

They gave me one last year when I was OW Sapphire, travelling in Y...

In case this is interesting for anyone, I flew MH on Feb 1st, and my points credited yesterday, after four days. Similar turnaround to other oneworld airlines. I'm quite surprised, to be honest, but equally impressed.

I know for a fact that there is no priority security screening provided at KUL. They have a weird system there. Low-level screening (don't have to take laptops or liquids out) past immigration and then another higher-level one (where you do have to take laptops and liquids out) at the departure gate. No priority lanes at any point.

That really is impressive but I'm guessing QF have a much better tracking system than MH if it were to be the other way around...

Now that I think about it, you're right.

However, I do remember, there is priority outgoing immigration. Whether this is covered under the benefit or not is certainly debatable.

+1 had a flight on the 3rd, that credited on the 5th (all 64 points and 10 status credits worth :) )

Mum flew out to Malaysia a few days ago, but her MH fare was O (sale fare), so no earn on QFF. So, she continues to credit to Enrich.

Did you book directly through MH or through travel agent or part of another airlines booking?

Did they display your QFF status on the BP?

It was booked on Zuji, as the fare wan't available directly on the MH website.

I'll get back to you on the status display question....

Neither UAE nor Malaysia have a QF website, although I won't be waiting up for the latter... cheers skip

Does anyone thinks that this MH & QF "spat" is due to QF showing displeasure at MH for the failure of their proposed joint venture of "Qantasia"?? Or is just me??

That's always a possibility, though if it's a show of displeasure it must be mutual.

I read it as, MH promised to help QF to start an airline, but wants OW membership in return. And now that they've got the membership, MH cuts and runs.

Kuala Lumpur is still not included in the list of destinations for QF classic awards, but Dubai is. Grrrr.

I just spoke to QF about this. The agent put me on hold to investigate because he thought KUL was loaded as an award destination. He returned to say that due to "system limitations" KUL would never appear in the list and they do not have authority to waive the phone booking fee.

Wow.
