Malaysian Airlines MH17 Crashes in Ukraine

Err, manifest with passport numbers
So the airlines just give out that info to a country the flight wouldn't have touched? Do they do that normally, or just when something happens?
ie, does DFAT know that if I'm on a flight when I board said flight, or only if something happens to that flight and the airline hands out the manifest to 3rd parties?

And, Smart traveller on DFAT site, which we all fill out before leaving the country, don't we.
Nope. I've never really gone to the smart traveller site.
I only look at it when somethings happened that might cause a travel alert for somewhere I'm thinking of visiting.
I have never registered my travel with DFAT and see no reason to.

Airlines are obliged under law to pass the details on to various countries as part of the preclearance, when something goes wrong there is an additional requirement for the country of any passport holder to be notified by the airline.

In the case of an accident outside Australia, early provision of a passenger manifest to DFAT is essential, as that Department is responsible for providing consular assistance to Australian victims and their families. An Australian consular representative would be available at the Airline's Family Support Centre, and at the crash site, to assist Australian victims, and family members, who may travel to the site when it is safe to do so.

The only reason I do it is to potentially help my relos left behind wondering if I am coming home again instead of spending days in misery, they do love me after all and don't necessarily know exactly where I am at all times.

the media jumps on the 'ignorance'/fear of others... 'hunting' down passengers at various airports around OZ, that have NOTHING to do with flight MH17, to get their 'comments'.....SHAME ON YOU, MEDIA OUTLETS

Just absolutely shocked by all of this. As others have said, what is the world coming to.

Deepest sympathy to the families of crew and pax on board MH17

I really feel sorry for MAS. They've had very bad luck and it really is unfair on them that they should suffer as a result of this incident, which really is no fault of theirs. I will continue to support them. It must be so awful for the crew, who have lost more friends on MH17 after the losses from MH370. I really really hope that passengers are mindful and nice to the crew rather than complain about the tiniest problem.

Well said. Whilst the jury is still out on what happened with MH370, it does seem that the SQ or AI flight could just as easily have been shot down instead of MH17. I know some will disagree but there does seem to be a huge element of misfortune here.

I have always had good service from MH although our last couple of trips to Malaysia we have used Air AsiaX as they were (so) much cheaper. Next time to Malaysia I will make a point of booking them as they are going to need a lot of goodwill and support to survive this terrible tragedy. They are having a real 'annus horribilis' in the fullest sense of that phrase.

Not necessarily DFAT.

Australian Customs Service - Delivering today and building our capabilities for the future

You might imagine other countries have similar programs, and would benefit from sharing data.

12hrs+ later...the debris area seems to be 'off limits' to those who need to get in and start an investigation...no recovery operation has begun...no activity on the site ..... seems WAR is an excuse to cover up MASS MURDER of innocents

update..the crash site is 'controlled by armed illegal groups'.... geee that's promising!!

Nope...if I die overseas, I'll die with the exact same amount of care that the Australian government had for my life since I was born, i.e. none.

Besides, the way consular services are going in this country and in outstations, it's probably not worth relying on them at all any more.

My family isn't dumb - they can piece the action together by themselves.

TONY A .... full of 'talk'....let's see how much 'action'

Well at least he didn't use the event to push his political agenda and "credentials" like he did in a recent memorial speech.

I am sure while access to the site is restricted all is being recorded from eyes in the sky.

My sincere thoughts are with all the family & friends of the loved-ones onboard Flight MH 17. No doubt The pain & suffering being suffered presently would be harrowing to say the least.

My thoughts also go out to MAS, who have also been dealt a major curve ball with their business reputation no doubt taking a major hit.

No doubt that a somber atmosphere that must exist within the entire MAS community presently. All MAS employees would be doing it very tough at present. My thoughts go out to everyone involved.

Just got home and found out that two of the Brits on board were Newcastle United fans travelling to New Zealand for 2 pre-season matches being played over the next week or so.

Whilst I did not know either of them personally, one of the gentlemen was well known as 'The Undertaker' for always attending matches in his distinctive black suit and white shirt. I stood near John many times over the 10 years I travelled up and down England supporting the team and had exchanged many a glance and a nod (as you did when you often saw the same people who you didn't know but knew you were there for the same cause). Their dedication to following their beloved favourite sporting team to the other side of the world is truly breathtaking and it is shocking to think that they have been caught up in this tragedy and this has been their fate.

And this is not a time for anyone to enter into a debate about the current state of football and it's players. These gents were supporting the team with a 120 year history which they clearly loved very much.

I hope that there were no West Ham United fans making the same journey to New Zealand. Lots of EPL teams in Asia in the coming weeks so very possible.

RIP John
RIP Liam
