What sort of 'lockout' would that be? The ability to turn systems off has to exist in case of fire...and unless you plan on totally rewiring every aircraft in the world, you'd be able to kill any system by removing power from the appropriate bus.

A self contained system.

Search for MH370: moist towelette discovery unlikely to help find missing flight

A Malaysia Airlines moist towelette found on a Western Australian beach is unlikely to be any help in locating the missing flight MH370, which disappeared on March 8 last year.
Nine News reported the discovery of the towelettes by WA couple Kingsley and Vicki Miller at Cervantes, about 200 kilometres north of Perth.
The item was found on the beach in July, four months after the plane disappeared, and was sent to Canberra for testing.

Wow batteries Lithium ion ..... That can damage an aircraft/aeroplane even the modern ones.

Truly a monumental oversight

It wasn't an oversight. Their carriage was allowed, as long as they were appropriately packed...which they were. The issue in the report simply relates to security inspection. Nevertheless, carriage of these batteries, whilst still allowed, is being refused by more and more airlines.

And given the plane seemingly continued to fuel exhaustion - no explosion or fire - batteries unlikely to be responsible for whatever happened

If proved an item, its the first piece of aircraft debris which shuts down alot of skeptics who indicate it went elsewhere.

I do question that if it was found 9 months ago, nothing similar has been found alongside it in the last 9 months. Not sure why this news has suddenly come out 9 months later?

How could that ever be proven? Could have come from anywhere, people take them off planes all the time for later use. Given the nature of many of the assumptions and leaps in logic that the skeptics have made, this is insignificant, as it's not even a leap of faith or wild assumption to think that the towelette could have originated elsewhere. In other words, it won't shut down anyone.

Acknowledge the uncertainty around the item. But what I find interesting is that something was found that could have been from the aircraft and the timeframe it was found. I can't imagine what testing might have been carried out. I'm also not surprised something else wasn't with it. The nature of the towelette, light and easily blown by wind, makes it of little obvious value for tracking ocean currents and could explain the lack of other items.

I also very vaguely recall a news story about things being found on a beach last year, but with a dismissal of usefulness at the time. This might be a tie in such that we now know the nature of the item found.

One cannot make this assumption yet. How do we know there was no explosion? They the batteries could have melted a small hole thru the fuselage and caused an decompression resulting in "time of useful consciousness" of only seconds 10-15 !

May have flown like that with all the way to FE ( fuel Exhaustion)

Realistically?

Realistically who knows ? Statistically low probability however I have seen lots of weird things

Any latest developments on MH370?

Is the search effort about to start winding down or will keep going indefinitely?

Haven't heard much on MH370 in quite a while.

They are still doing the fine detail in the search area for a few months I believe

With no news, no press

The Australian sent a journalist and photographer over to check out the Maldives' sightings. Seems quite credible yet the Maldives have never been contacted by anyone to do with the investigation. Not ever!
