What this demonstrates is the woeful state of Malaysia's military defences.fellow over at PPRuNe opined they should have got a lot more info from the radar. He was flamed but came back with this reply-
Easy.

I was Swiss Air Force Air Defense Radar operator

Easy thing. I have on my screen the unidentified echo with altitude, speed, heading and intercept course in order to scramble the planes ;-)

This is what happens when you let clowns running the country... I grew up Malaysia and left 13 years ago, part of the 'brain drain'... There is so much corruption, nepotism and cronyism in the government. The only way to get to the top is if you know someone or you have money. It is really sad to watch it but I hope this will wake people up and bring forward change that is badly needed..

This absolute tragedy is definitely bringing that to light as well.
I think one of the few positives one can take away is how multilateral the efforts to find the plane. Many regional disputes have been temporarily forgotten. I wish them all the best in finding answers for the relatives of those on board, whatever they may be.

With all respect given the likelyhood of 239 deaths is this an appropriate response. Should we be showing respect rather than trying to turn this into Humor. Whilst it is my own Opinion I find this distasteful

End of the day, no one knows exactly where this plane is. If it was headed to the Indian Ocean, then we might be waiting for a number of weeks.

Here is the possible things that might have gone wrong.

WHAT COULD HAVE HAPPENED?

A mid-air explosion: The lack of debris could be explained by it falling into Malaysian jungle.
A terrorist attack: Director of CIA has said terrorism could not be ruled out
Power failure: Possibly caused by deliberate cutting of power to communication instruments

Electronic warfare: 20 passengers on board were experts in this technology.

Hijacking: Radar data indicates the plane might have made a U-turn.

A pilot error: There is a chance of them in all air mysteries, claim experts

Structural failure: Possibly involving damage sustained by an accident in 2012

Pilot suicide: There were two large jet crashes in the late 1990s caused by this
Aeronautical black hole: Plane is stranded hundreds of miles from current search area

Who said we were laughing?

If anything, installing that blockhead to say what he said is far more effective than the hapless excuse which the Malaysian government had proffered.

Could also say as much for every two-bit shoes trying to cash in their fifteen minutes of fame with their dubious speculations for pure gain at the expense of consideration of the victims.

I see the government try to give the best information they have available. I see the world's media claiming contradictions. But actions speak louder than words. As the guy said, there is no contradiction as they have been searching on both sides of Malaysia since Saturday.

I hear a reporter just now saying the search is badly organised and a so called expert say they need to better coordinate the search. How the hell would they know?

Then there was the pommie idiot at the last press conference demanding a statement that some AD was checked on that aircraft. Not happy with the statement that it is Malaysian policy to do all ADs, not happy that the guy had to check the records if the reporter wanted a specific answer about one single aircraft.

All I see is a media beat up and a heap of people jumping on the bandwagon. Instead of trying to prove a scandal let them get on with the job.

But then how can I expect quiet contemplation when plane nerds can't even handle that it is appropriate to illustrate a story about Malaysian airlines with a picture about any Malaysian airlines aircraft.

Unless jb747 explains otherwise (and I am not interested in the opinions or speculations of the unqualified on this), I refuse to believe that a QF plane could disappear and not be locatable for 5 days and counting. Sure it may be somewhere not immediately recoverable, and they may not immediately know what had happened to it, but I refuse to believe that a properly run airline would not even know where the plane is. Even with the AF disaster they knew roughly where it was, even though they couldn't get to it for a long time.

I cannot imagine how dreadful this must be for the families of those on board. It makes me feel sick as each day goes by. They must be suffering so much.

Um.... QF?

What a shemozzle.

Hopefully the latest sattelite photos of the crash site in the South China Sea near Vietnam are accurate and we can find out what happened and put this matter to rest.

Rather than speculation or opinion I will merely state the fact that satellite coverage in the polar regions can be weak, HF is very fickle, and in the past QF63/64 has been out of contact with ATC for periods of several hours.

Aside from the fact that I can see the irony in Anna's statement that she wont listen to opinions or speculation but quite happy to engage in it herself?

However I agree with this statement. Unless Qantas have got into the business of satellite tracking or have installed some other system of radar across the world they are frequently dependant on other parties to do so, as are all airlines.
