Pity about Tomnod...

According to the news article the Vietnamese authorities have had enough of the Malaysian two-step and are winding down their activities until the Malaysians can make up their minds which way the aircraft went.

Not entirely true.they are switching their main focus to the south of Vung Tau.This is where the oil rig and Chinese satellite images are. They did announce this change before the Chinese released their satellite images. Is the Malaysian government being given all the information?
I think the dig at Malaysia was just friendly political dialogue.

Thanks .. helpful. The query was specifically about QF's A380s to LHR and LAX, so I "suppose" they are always within a sat footprint, maybe with a hole over western Asia / the Stans type of area (I can google that, no doubt).
!

I wouldn't expect Qantas A380s to over fly the 'Stans in either case.

Misinformation, or partial release of information, could well be more damaging than saying "I don't know" ...of course they would never do that as it is a loss of 'face' to admit that they don't know where the plane is.

If the authorities immediately gave the full story (as it appears now), that last primary radar contact was over the Gulf of Thailand 40 minutes into the flight, and that there was a suspected secondary radar echo 200nm NW of Penang about 2 hours into the flight, with some indication, albeit unconfirmed, that the plane had turned around, and that they are therefore searching both areas until a more precise location is confirmed - there would be much more confidence in the search effort's organisation.

Alas, the news has come out in dribs and drabs, reported, retracted then reported again. This may not reflect what is happening on the ground, but the authorities dealings with the international press leaves much to be desired.

You're banging on about media and public acceptance. Such opinion provides almost zero information about what is actually being done inside the organisation.

News Flash - I didn't say they still flew directly SIN-LHR, merely was reporting that they did, according to my recollection, pass over some 'stans while they did so.

In that case your comment has zero relevance to my post in reply to someone else's question concerning the current situation.

This whole terrible event is becoming surreal. Next someone will be suggesting it was scooped up by aliens from outer space.

Sitting here in the lax t4 aa lounge waiting for QF16.. swmbo commented as I read out the latest updateS, that the AA 777 just behind us was a lot of aeroplane to just lose..
Security seemed a bit tighter.. qantas are x-raying the cases with a portable set up as they are checked in..and the tsa line seemed a bit on edge too.
All not a lot of fun for the cattle….

I assume that refers to Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Pakistan and essentially other nations that end with "-stan".

Yes that would be a stan. But they said a stan type of area. The last bit being what I missed.
