The problem with that scenario is that the new base is near the US Mcmurdo base and the ship is near Heard Island basically on the opposite side of the continent.
As well cargo vessels should have an IMO number, this vessel doesn't.fishing, naval and search vessels don't.
There has been concern that China has already got satellite tracking available at one of its bases.therefore they could have seen something. But as that technology is not meant to be in Antarctica they don't want to reveal it.

The fourth base still under construction is not near Mcmurdo, it's the Taishan base inland from Davis the ship is heading for it or the other two Chinese bases in the vicinity.

US Navy P-8 Poseidon came in to Perth this morning, saw it taxiing over to international.

It arrived yesterday, it was heading out on a sortie, 5 planed for today with three Aussie P3s, a Kiwi P3 which arrived last night and the P8.

Does that flight path link up with any of the other eyewitness reports previously acknowledged? Would it have really flown on such a direct route as the line on the map - assuming the plane passed over certain waypoints on the way there, surely they aren't in a straight line?

Seems another plausable option that the PIC could have suggested the FO go for a break, locked the FO out of the flight deck and re-programmed the flight to head to MLE, put the plane on a climb to resist people trying to access the flight deck (put on his own oxygen mask, climbed to 45K feet) and then flew onto oblivion.

Malaysian newspaper Berita Harian reported yesterday that investigators have found five airport runways, which included the Male International Airport in the Maldives, loaded in MH370 pilot Captain Zaharie Ahmad Shah’s homemade flight simulator.

Still, not conclusive but another option to review.

MH have flown to Male before (not sure if they still do), so it could be purely coincidental.

I am just trying to fit things into my head, if there were issues, would SGN not have been closer, or are there obstacles in the way?

Found them:
After MH370 disappeared from civilian radar in the early hours of March 8, the plane was flown westward from its intended path to Beijing, turning around at Checkpoint Igari in the South China Sea.

From there, it flew on to Checkpoint Vampi, northeast of Indonesia’s Aceh province and a navigational point used for planes following route N571 to the Middle East.
Subsequent plots indicate the plane flew towards Checkpoint Gival, south of the Thai island of coughet, and was last plotted heading northwest towards another checkpoint, Igrex,

Now to track down that photo with the check points

Indeed. MH even have scheduled services to Male....(ok, 737 services, but still)
and a check of the MH website, MH177 flies daily to MLE - a 4hr 10m flight

It beggars understanding. Why fly such a precise route if the intention was to Thelma & Louise until the fuel ran out?

Ah ok. Saw it taxiing towards international from T2...I assumed it was arriving from somewhere based on that.

Under what circumstances would the black box transmitters be activated? and is there a way for this to be disabled somehow.

OT but with the US and NZ search planes in AUS and conducting sorties from PER what are the immigration rules around this? Are they held in the international area and therefore not officially entering AUS or do they enter under predetermined humanaterian criteria and the sorties treated as domestic flights? Assuming that they would need crew rest and fuel would RAAF Pearce not be a better place for them?

No immigration etc, you will find the P8 and Kiwi aircraft will go to Pearce on their sortie return I expect. PER was just a transit after the ferry.
