And if the term is ‘service’ charge instead of ‘gratuity’ I’ve read on the internet that the establishment keeps that and it’s not actually a tip! A NY’er friend of ours told us just to add the same amount for a tip that the tax comes to. Saves any calculations.

Tourist type places tend to add it on automatically as they know us tourists might not give the tip. And remember in the shops that tax is not included in the price and it’s added on at the cash register so you can’t get out the correct money.

I’ve been thinking of pre booking shuttles etc for 2 weeks time to avoid a lot of the issues on tipping. In San Francisco and Vancouver.

I bought Desigual when we were first in Barcelona back in 2014. I still have the dress and wear it from time to time. A summer dresss. It’s black floral with a splash of red, slim fitting with full A line skirt. I like it but there’s a lot of their stuff I don’t like at all which is hardly surprising given I’m not their target market.

the bill this morning said “gratuity”. If I ever see “service charge”, then I check with my waiter whether they get it or not.

Yes the Desigual stuff is much more for young people, although every now and then I see something I like. I do have two fabulous coats I bought around 2009, but they don’t seem to do anything like that anymore. Apparently there is a bigger store in Soho - so the shop assistant told me today, but I think I have done my bit. :)

I think I’ll be doing the same. I’m sure they won’t mind me asking. Also, some money left each night on a pillow with a Thankyou note. Hopefully this means they won’t wipe the tooth brush on things nasty...

yes we always leave money daily with a thank-you. I find the housekeeping are always lovely, but I am sure they appreciate the bit extra as they don’t get paid much. Our one today wanted us to keep talking, because she loved our accent so much. Felt a bit like something out of Love Actually :)

Well, UK people love my husbands accent but they think I’m one of them! I must remember to say GDay which is actually what I say here too. I don’t say mate though. We must speak very differently in SA, Queens English I guess.

I always have a relatively tidy room so I tend to leave $2/3 for housekeeping, with a little note and smiley, of thank you. But I don’t leave it on the pillow because I know they don’t always change the pillowcases and I don’t want filthy money on my pillow. Regarding toothbrushes being used for unfortunate things, I tend to put everything I have away in the drawer in the bathroom if there is one. Also, as I have seen them clean crockery with dirty towels I tend to swish crockery with boiling water before use.

The restaurants, cafes and food carts etc are all rated for cleanliness. The only ones to consider is those with and A rating which they are obviously proud of and prominently display. If you don’t see an A rating A4 sheet, if you look around somewhere else on their windows/carts, they will try put the B or a C kind of hide it down in the bottom corner someplace slightly out of view.

A friend who once worked as a housemaid in hotels said the best place to leave a tip was in the bathroom. In one place she worked whenever there was a changeover, a tip left on the pillow or bed was often pocketed by others who rushed in early to do the rooms (and collect the tip). :(

Yes, I'm often worried about the fate of the tip in those places where they send someone to check the minibar (or the room in general) as you are checking out.

That’s a good point. I know in my NYC hotel, there’s only one person doing the upkeep as there is no minibar etc. I stay in a place with a kitchen, more like an apartment. Same place as Dr Ralph’s last NYC trip coincidentally. As I stay in the same room I know her name is Maria. She told me a few years ago that ‘Jesus would save them from Trump’. That didn’t work out too well.

The bathroom sounds like a good idea then as I agree the mini bar attendant may have a nice early routine sorted out.

It’s funny seeing poached eggs in NYC. They’ve turned up more and more following all the AU and NZ cafes - same with Smashed Avo.
